What are you up to this weekend?
This Memorial Day Weekend isn't on fire at the movies. Nobody much cares about Baywatch (which is neither exciting like an action movie or funny like a comedy, but can still be amply defined as an "action comedy") and a new Pirates of the Caribbean is getting only the usual flock of lemming moviegoers for an established franchise and no one else. This is, by a very wide margin, the worst opening for a Pirates sequels. Elsewhere in sequel land the news isn't much better. Alien Covenant is the least popular Alien film yet if you adjust for inflation (and dont count those Predator crossovers because why would you?). Will Wonder Woman turn things around next week for audience interest or is counterprogramming that Big Hollywood rarely does anymore what they actually needed to do this very summer?
In limited release, slightly better news. Two unconventional romcoms are performing pretty well: Israel's 'wedding without a groom' film The Wedding Plan and the unfaithful ole marrieds of The Lovers are still expanding to decent business.

Hey, I care about Baywatch! - 'cause I care about Alexandra Daddario - hot!!
I'll watch the movie this thursday!
I caught a double feature of Pee-Wee's Big Adventure and Ed Wood at The New Beverly Cinema. It was my first time seeing both movies. Pee-Wee was much funnier than I expected and Ed Wood is the most empathetic I've seen in a while. Landau was phenomenal as everyone has alluded to, but why don't people mention Depp's performance more often? He does some great stuff with this role.
BVR : " Ed Wood" is a great movie and yes you are right Depp gives one of his finest performances but Landau steals the film and deserved his Oscar
I rewatched Carol for the first time since 2015. I'm more impressed with the performances and the immaculate construction (the finale/climax will be studied in film classes). Still somewhat agog that Haynes couldn't make best director.
I saw "Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2" which was fun but a bit long- great soundtrack and Kurt Russell proves why he is not only a good actor but an enduring movie star
I saw Alien Covenant which I enjoyed more than I thought I would. Fassbender was easily the best thing about it but he usually is the best part of any movie he's in so that's no surprise. Sure the aliens are cool and all but they can't really compare to a murderous android with Iggy Pop hair wearing what can only be described as a onesie.
All Governments Lie. A disturbing documentary. No wonder it didn't make waves.
"Please use the phrase 'amply defined' in a sentence about Baywatch."
"Baywatch is neither exciting like an action movie or funny like a comedy, but can still be amply defined as an action comedy."
"Huh."
Seeing The Lovers tomorrow - cannot wait!
Unrelated: I hope the podcast returns soon!
Finally saw Get Out. They did such a fantastic job of creating tension, and the acting was great. I'm a bit of a wimp so it's not really my type of movie but I really liked it and thought it was very well done. Excited to see what Peele will do next.
to change the subject - just saw the trailer for Logan Lucky - looks downright terrible - I don't understand why Soderbergh has chosen to make his comeback with something so seemingly
slight!
And why another heist movie? weren't those tedious Ocean's movies enough?
I finally watched Jonathan on DVD...oh my, that love scene got me all teared up!
I saw the only Sigourney film i'd never seen Eyewitness/The Janitor with an extremely hot William Hurt plus some gr8 supporting actors Plummer,Freeman,Woods plus Pamela Reed,Steven Hill and Irene Worth
I watched MIAMI BLUES because I'd never seen it and it was exactly what I needed. Mindless '80s thriller with half-naked peak Alec Baldwin.
I saw Alien: Covenant. Movie was pretty bad, but Fassbender was fantastic in it.
Miami Blues is GREAT! - And Jennifer Jason Leigh is SO good in it!
Election: Possibly more relevant now than it was when I first saw it 20 years ago. As a professor, my husband was fully on Mr. McAllister's side from start to finish, but I felt that the script needed to make Tracy more intentionally ruthless in her ambition for his actions to be more understandable. Moreover, her affair with the other teacher becomes so inconsequential after a while as to be completely disposable. Otherwise, Reese Witherspoon, Matthew Broderick, and Chris Klein ace their roles.
Good People: One of those movies in which nearly every character is unlikable, unsympathetic, or just plain stupid to the point of virtual irredeemability. If I'm going to spend two hours with characters, then it would help for the filmmaker to give me a reason to root for at least one of them.
Loev: Heartbreaking, complex, funny, and somewhat disturbing. Dhruv Ganesh's tragic death was a loss to film, and Shiv Pandit should be a huge international star.
Ulrich: I just watched the trailer. What was that!? THAT'S what Universal (Baby Driver's distributor) was so scared of!? I gotta tell Universal: Move it back to August (possibly the still empty August 25 window), NOW. That trailer pretty much reveals that you have no competition and had basically NOTHING to actually worry about.
Troy H.: Yeah, if we were supposed to sympathize with McAllister (which, I'm not sure we are. Pity, probably, but not "sympathize"), it needed to be less "Aw, look at the delusional dove, she thinks that she's tough" and more "Mandy from Billy and Mandy".
"Alien: Covenant"... was that stupid... * 1/2 out of ***** And no, the cast and a couple of good moments aren't enough to redeem a film that utterly stupid.
Baywatch was absolutely horrible.
Pirates 5 was fine. I don't think it was as bad as 30 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, but it was still thoroughly average.
Jesus Alonso: If I were to identify something that's probably Too Well Reviewed, it's Alien: Covenant.
chasm301: Yeah, personally, I'm thinking my reaction would wind up being, "not as good as even Pirates 3, but substantially above Pirates 4."
Sad to report that War Machine is really bad - really crushing as I'm the biggest fan of David Michôd's previous outing, The Rover!
Ulrich: I watched the first ten to fifteen minutes of that on Netflix. There's no story, it's ALL exposition. Somewhat witty exposition, but still JUST exposition, like the people involved tried to compress a Netflix Season into two hours.
Mumford & Sons, et al. - So great live
Guardians - fun and kept my mind off politics; Bradley Cooper's voice narration is awesome.
Master of None S2, E1-4 - Charming and sweet.
Get Out - Wished I saw it before the hype, but it was still very enjoyable. Also, I still love Catherine Keener.
Fortitude S2, E1-3 - WTF? More dead polar bears? Is anyone watching this show?
