I was curious to see what happened that year, so I read the wikipedia article. Janet Maslin panned Kathleen Turner and called her a soap opera actress! How did she dare!

This is so strange because she's clearly the best English-language performance of that year, followed by a close Diane Keaton and nobody else.

The only performance of that year that is actually better wouldn't have a shot in a million years, Isabelle Adjani in Possession.

I think my best actress list would go like that:

Isabelle Adjani - Possession - Gold
Kathleen Turner - Body Heat - Silver
Fernanda Montenegro - They Don't Wear Black-Tie - Bronze
Fanny Ardant - The Woman Next Door
Diane Keaton - Reds

I like Hepburn in On Golden Pond, but come on!
