Here We Go Again...
Amanda Seyfried posted the following photo online this weekend with the hashtag #HereWeGoAgain which leads us to believe that Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again is officially filming now...or has officially wrapped filming? One or the other...
Now, I know that TFE has been a big ol' grinch about the first movie which a lot of people love but we're happy to try out the new movie since ABBA is the greatest pop band of all time and there are so many songs left to be sung. Plus the sequel has a new director Ol Parker (Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) and the principle problem with the original movie (aside from terrible jukebox book source material) was that Phyllida Lloyd didn't seem to understand what a camera was for much less where to point it, how to stage anything for it and possibly what editing even was once you'd actually shot something.
Here are my top twenty favorite songs by ABBA that weren't "sung" in the first movie. Sung is in quotes in case they ask Pierce Brosnan to warble again.
- Knowing Me Knowing You
- One Of Us
- The Way Old Friends Do
- Under Attack
- Summer Night City
- Fernando
- Angel Eyes
- Chiquitita
- Waterloo
- Ring Ring
- Happy New Year
- Eagle
- On and On and On
- Head Over Heels
- Another Town, Another Train
- I Do I Do I Do I Do
- So Long
- The Visitors
- People Need Love
- Tiger

Will the horror never end!
Abba really does have an incredible song catalog and discography. Let's hope ol' Ol doesn't fuck it up the way Phyll did.
Ok, but can we discuss how weird it is that Amanda Seyfried isn't a bigger star? Her career trajectory just kinda baffles me.
Knowing Me Knowing You is the best ABBA song, period. No wonder the first movie didn't work.
@thefilmjunkie Yeaaah I've wondered that myself too many times. She had such potential but made so many critical/box office flops and kinda fell off the radar. I don't know if she just needs new management or should take a stab at television or what.....
The first movie did introduce me to "Our Last Summer", and occasionally proved how beautiful Greece looks, but it was just a bad, bad movie. Good luck with this.
Please make it stop
In a weird way, I feel like Amanda Seyfried's career is similar to her Mean Girls co-star Rachel McAdams...Hollywood and audiences seem to like her just fine, but she's never quite broken out. I think one big Spotlight-esque role could get her an Oscar nomination.
It's weird though...she was in films that were big successes (Mamma Mia, Les Miserables) and had a few well-received roles in independent features (Chloe, While We're Young, Lovelace), but many of her big-budget films have been tepidly received (Pan, A Million Ways to Die in the West, Red Riding Hood). But her best role is still her first IMO - Karen from Mean Girls ALWAYS.
This site is definitely elitist about movies. Just look at the movies that are mentioned and/or discussed.
Yes, Mama Mia was a badly filmed movie, but it sure made a lot of people happy ... enough to pack houses. I do hope this movie is a better product, but I do not think it will come close to the first in sales!
I'm dying to know which songs will feature in this one. I did read a set report which mentioned When I Kissed the Teacher, but that's all so far.
McDonald's make a lot of people happy and it sucks. Am I an elitist to state that? Come on!
Mamma Mia is one of the worst movies I've ever seen and I love Abba.
"The Day Before You Came" and "If It Wasn't For the Nights" are my very favorite ABBA songs. The former is just hauntingly beautiful, with a film noir-esque music video, and the latter is disco at its finest.
That being said, I don't think anyone can sing these songs as wonderfully as Agnetha and Frida did, so maybe it's for the best if they're not in the new film. The ABBA women are truly two of the best female vocalists in pop history.
there's always the better version:

The first film still gave me one of the most surreal, fun movie theater experience I've ever had. The theater was packed. Most were of the older generation variety. But I don't know when it happened by the theater started feeling like a rock concert mid-way through. People loved it.
@cal roth
I am not going to dignify that with an answer. Maybe you felt I was patronizing, but I was not.
@ cal roth
I just looked up the definition of elitist and I definitely used it incorrectly ( I think? )
ABBA is the best pop group - do you think they are better than Queen, or do you think Queen is otherwise classified?
Mamma Mia is the worst directed film I have ever seen.
My favorite all time group is Queen. I personally cannot compare the two groups. I also love ABBA, but for different reasons.
Best part of Mamma Mia! (#1) was the press tour (so many great on-camera interviews). That whole cast LOVED making this movie, fell in love with their cast mates, and were also shocked by the universal appeal and how much money it made.
Also, watching it in a theater with a multi-generational audience was pretty great. For some (my kids, included), this was their first exposure to Meryl Streep, so props for that.
WOW - can't believe all the nasty comments about ABBA. You do know who runs this website don't you? I am an ABBA fan and have seen the Mamma Mia musical and the movie about 4 times, Sure there are some bad scenes but the film is deliberaly cheesy and loads of fun. And Meryl deserved an Oscar nomination for her brilliant performance. I have never heard the Winner takes it all as good as Agnethas until hers.
Fantastic article, thank you for sharing.
