Tweetweek: Michelle & Miscellania

For this final* edition of Tweetweek, something more focused. Every once in a blue moon (okay, totally frequently) I do a search for "Michelle Pfeiffer" on twitter just to see what people are saying. It probably won't surprise you to hear that in the Off Years of her career, which are most years given how infrequently she works, it tends to be references to Grease 2, Scarface, and her iconic Catwoman with a light seasoning of other famous movies tossed into the mix.

Lately it's been mostly mother! and we're here for the web's enthusiasm about the RePfeiffal. I mean even RuPaul felt the need to chime in. We wish his prediction hadn't felt so quickly like wishful thinking (given the cold slap of audience response to the difficult movie) but it's not for lack of a great performance!

More Pfeiffer and a few random other topics after the jump like the Kingsman  franchise, Jessica Chastain's ubiquity, and Victoria & Abdul's leading man...

Okay on to non-Pfeiffer topics...

* I enjoyed the silliness and mood-bosting brevity of doing twitter collections here and there which were mostly for the benefit of non-twitter users and because it's so easy to miss amusing things about movies on the app. But SquareSpace has suddenly made it impossible to embed them correctly (so this post took four times as long as it should have which ruins the fun of it!) and thus ruined all the old posts somehow. Sigh

Michelle Pfeiffer is to Mother! what Ruth Gordon was to Rosemary's Baby, kinda... right? Well, then it'd make sense that La Pfeiffer finally gets her Oscar.

If Pfeiffer start winning some critics prizes for mother! (& Murder on OE) then she still got a chance for the Oscar.

The critics luv her!! She swept most o the critics prize baxk in 1989 for The Fab Baker Bros!!

Fingers crossed for Pfeiffer she's divine.

If not this a momentum builder for her in future roles, please Oscar Gods make something happen for My Fave.

I'd die happy if Gillian Anderson ever recieves an Oscar nom. Unlikely to happen though, but who knows? HOPE DIES LAST!

Have you ever featured "I could never be your woman"? I've just seen it again and while it's not a groundbreaking rom-com revolution, it's very entertaining and with fine acting by Michelle. Also Tracy Ullman is great as usual.

Boo Squarespace

I love Tweetweek, so sorry to hear it's going.

Now I'm going to have to get up in the middle of the night to read evening tweets in US

She won't even be nominated. The Academy members will have turned off their DVD/BluRay players long before the movie ends.

September 23, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPete

@Pete : how is it a bad thing since her amazing performance happens in the first half ? Maybe if AMPAS voters turn off the movie before that awful last tier which ruins everything, Michelle still has a chance?

Rest in peace, amazing Tweetweek series. May your sacrifice help bring Michelle Pfeiffer one step closer to recognition for mother!, if these kinds of things can work like that.

Is the RePfeiffal really a thing?

I know Nathaniel wants it to be a thing, but it just sort of seems like Michelle is in a bunch of 2017 projects destined to go nowhere. Wizard Of Lies excited absolutely nobody, got some obligatory Emmy nominations for the movie star casting, but no wins (which was really the point). mother! got the fabled F cinemascore. I can't see it coming near any oscar nominations. And Murder On The Orient Express looks basic as hell.

Michelle is great. Love her. In a just world, she'd already have an oscar or two. But I don't think her 2017 is going anywhere as well as Nathaniel imagines it is.

Talk all you want about a nom for Michelle... but we just saw Stronger and I think Miranda Richardson acted circles around the former. I am pulling for her to go to the Oscars. She is a constant force in her roles.

I just watched mother!

So happy we are still able to see films this metaphorical! I couldn't leave my eyes off the screen and my thoughts from the story. The film is a gem!

Pfeiffer makes so much with so little.

Natalie, I couldn't agree more but I thought I was going mad as most people are ignoring her and focusing on Maslany who is very good but obvs. Lead.

But Richardson is just staggeringly good in Stronger. It's so much and yet it isn't - it's a barnstorming, ballsy, lived in performance that really does it's job as a supporting performance. And it's sooo Oscar friendly. She is bound to get some Bafta love too.

I adore Michelle Pfeiffer and I don't think the ship has sailed on that front.

Michelle is terrific, but she's in a shitty movie. She's not just in a shitty movie, she's in a universally reviled movie. So let's get real.

How frustrating about the embedding of tweets. I so enjoy these posts. Even the people I follow I often discovered stuff that I missed.

September 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterGlenn Dunks

How I hope Pfeiffer emerges an awards contender this year! Alas, unless she's spectacular in MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS (or members of the Academy somehow go head over heels for MOTHER!), I suspect such doesn't come to fruition. :(

September 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAndrew Carden

I love Michelle but she needs a good starring role- this woman owns he screen!

September 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJaragon

Let us just be happy that Michelle is back in circulation and ready for better roles. The Oscar discussion for mother! is pure fantasy.

I am delighted that others have called deserved attention to Miranda Richardson's performance in Stronger. She disappears into the role and gives the film much needed grounding when the main story rarely rises about the conventional. It will take strong support from the UK members of the Academy for her to become a nominee. But who knows? The category may not be that competitive this year.

mother! was the best film of this year in my books & MP was fantastic in it

the F cinemascore stands for - Fuck you, it's brilliant ;-)

no movie has activated my brain like that since 2001 - still thinking about it over a week later... very much looking forward to the bluray release & extras

btw Harvey Weinstein wrote a piece on it if you're interested:
