Beauty vs Beast: Dame Julie, If You're Nasty
Jason Adams of MNPP here with our last "Beauty vs Beast" until the New Year, and what better way to ring out an exhausting 2018 than with a spoonful full of sugar to make all that bitter medicine go down -- the according-to-me scrumdiddlyumptious Mary Poppins Returns is hitting theaters this week and so let's get our Dame Julie Andrews on with a show-down between her two top roles, a frisky Alpine nun and a nanny from the stars...
PREVIOUSLY Never underestimate the power of poetry, yall -- in our re-match between Shakespease in Love and Saving Private Ryan once again twas the Bard who came out on top, with 70% of your vote. Said par:

Mary Poppins - she's practically perfect in every way. Maria has a number on how to solve a problem like her. No contest.
Jason, my Lord, this is the actual Sophie's Choice of your series. If I must choose, I'll go with Maria, because the songs are better and Julie gets to show more range.
But talk about an actress having a memorable 2 years. Incredible. And she played nannies in classic musicals both times. If Maria had Mary's powers, she would have been a flying/singing nun.
Side note: Has anyone read the note from the Baroness to her friends about calling off her marriage? It is hilarious.
I'm dying. Julie Andrews is my favorite actress and these are two of my favorite movies. I cannot.
But I had to go with Maria Rainer. She made 7 brats (not just 2) into accomplished singers, married a hot guy, and evaded the Nazis and all without magical flying nanny powers. Can your faves even?
Go with Victor/Victoria versus Tootsie some week. Same year, both great films, another really fun Julie performance.
Watching the precocious Maria makes me so happy that I want to yodel-lay-hee-hoo off a damn Alp.
Mary is a judgemental bitch. Maria is a riot. She would totally go clubbing with the gays.
Mary Poppins is practically perfect in every way. The Sound of Music is literal perfection in every way.
Nothing against the former, but it's not even close for me.
I'm Mary Poppins y'all!
I voted for Maria because The Sound of Music is my top 5 movie of all time! And because always when I am unhappy, I put the bluray and three hours later I am other person.
I miss A LOT Julie Andrews on movies!! A Lot!! I don't know why directors don't hire her anymore!
I just saw an interview of 2014 BBC One with her and Sir Ian McKellen and, God!, what a delight !!
I hope they made some British actors universe and put Maggie Smith, Julie Andrews, Julie Christie, Judi Dench, Vanessa Redgrave, Eileen Aktins, Michael Cane, Michael Gambon, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Derek Jacob, Brian Cox to share screen with each other soon as possible!
That's a tough choice and to be honest if I had the option of the three movies she made in this span my pick would be The Americanization of Emily but I chose Maria by a very slim margin. Mary Poppins is fantastic but SOM gives Julie more of a range of emotions to work with.
I went with Mary Poppins solely as a protest to "My Favorite Things" being played as a Christmas song every year. The song has nothing to do with Christmas.
I'm with Peggy. Maria is up for everything!
This is cruel!! Like asking u to choose btw yo twins!!
They r both perfect in their ways... Had Andrews not won for Mary Poppins, she'd hav won for Maria!
all i'm sayin' is bert had no chance of poppin' mary but the captain got to discover maria's von trapp
always go with the runaway convent gal
I always giggle when Maria says, “I don’t think I’ll be a very good nun.” No you won’t bitch, cause you want that man! Girl, you hot in them pants for Captain Von Trapp, and I don’t blame you! Get that good good! I mean, I voted for Maria.
What other title character is as mysterious and badass as Mary Poppins? Plus she knows how to stay unattached. Maria is cute and all, but this is no contest.
Both fantastic women, both fantastic characters, both fantastic films, both fantastic performances...
... still, I go with Maria, who has a character arc... Mary Poppins doesn't.
Maria, of course. (My first ever, movie viewing in a theater without my parents for the 10 year anniversary release, so you know how old I am, and I danced all the way home.) Plus, she's really nice. Mary is kind of a bitch. Spit spot and all that. Not sure if she would have let Jane and Michael share her bed during a thunderstorm, let alone Bert or those cute penguins.
Maria could punch a Nazi (in between guitar strums) without missing a beat.
I think Mary Popppins is the superior Julie Andrews performance but Maria Von Trapp wins my vote because she is 1000% awesome without any super powers and also so relatable. "How do you solve a problem like [insert your own name here]?"
Maria for arguably the greatest performance in the first hour of a movie ever.
