Gimme Gimme... That Thing Called Link
Screen
• Forbes a theory as to how network TV could survive the exodus of both Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy
• Film Ink Lady Bird was forced to make cuts and dub dialogue to get an M rating in Australia (essentially our PG13). That Playgirl magazine scene really upset the board that much? Ugh. I guess puritanism isn't only for Americans.
• /Film The Duplass Brothers have signed a four film deal with Netflix. This makes so much innate sense to me because their work always felt very televisual.
•/Film Bond 25 is taking an awfully long time to come together. Danny Boyle and the screenplay still aren't even done deals
• Pajiba Disney's upcoming streaming service and the possibility of more Muppets
• Decider Joe Reid reveals his obsession with To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything Julie Newmar
Black Panther Mania
• The Atlantic "The Tragedy of Erik Killmonger"
• Shadow and Act Ryan Coogler and Michael B Jordan's next project together, their fourth, is Wrong Answer a true story about an education system scandal.
• MCN David Poland persuasively argues which ways Black Panther will change things in Hollywood and which ways it won't
• Coming Soon Lupita Nyong'o will costar in Born a Crime, based on the memoir about the childhood of The Daily Show's Trevor Noah. She'll play his mother
Off Cinema
• Playbill watch highlights from a reunion concert of Thoroughly Modern Millie starring Sutton Foster and Gavin Creel -when is someone going to give Sutton a movie musical. She's great on camera (see Bunheads and Younger) and a bonafide Broadway star.
• The New Yorker a thought-provoking piece on the official Obama portraits in case you missed it
• W Mag Greta Gerwig directs Florence Welsh in a photoshoot
• W Mag Jordan Peele directs Janelle Monae in a Hitchcock inspired photoshoot
• W Mag Luca Guadagnino directs two models in a desert photoshoot
• Playbill Santino Fontana (Crazy Ex Girlfriend!) taking over for Gavin Creel in Hello, Dolly! on Broadway. Apparently Gavin Creel is having back surgery? Ouch.

Keala Settle and Pasek & Paul are all still out there campaigning for The Greatest Showman's Original Song. Pasek & Paul were just interviewed by Variety and Settle just performed "This Is Me" this time on Ellen. I love this song even though you hate it. Sorry not sorry.
That said, I still haven't decided if it's going to win Pasek & Paul a consecutive Oscar (they won last year for "City of Stars") or if Oscar voters will be more partial to honoring Mary J Blige (given the Mudbound fanbase and her double nomination) or if Coco will mean more to voters than just the mandatory check mark for Best Animated Feature.

I always thing Sutton Foster could be Diane Lane's younger sister. Every time I see the spots for YOUNGER on TV, I swear it's Diane!
Umm that's a Playgirl magazine Lady Bird buys, not a Playboy. Significant difference
The Lady Bird cuts don't really bother me. It's a really funny sight gag, but they could cut that and a couple f-bombs and it would easily have been a PG-13. I wonder if it would have caught on with teen audiences a bit more had it been PG-13. Would Juno have been as big had it been R?
Then again $46 million and counting is still incredible for Lady Bird. So proud.
I have no idea what will win best song, and that's exciting. I have two tiers in the category: I like the songs from CMBYN, Mudbound, and Coco. I like the songs from The Greatest Showman and Marshall a little less.
I realize I'm the odd one out here, but I don't really like the Shonda Rhimes or Ryan Murphy TV shows I've seen. Every time I try one, I come out wishing I hadn't. Their shows are like chemotherapy: They're trying to do something good, but often it comes out worse than expected/intended.
Original song is really difficult this year. "Remember Me" is such a rich song, used so perfectly in multiple different ways in "Coco"... but man, "This is Me" was the movie sequence of the year for me. And I haven't yet heard "Stand Up For Something" or "Mighty River", which I'm sure are also fantastic. Can the 4 losers retroactively compete with "Writing's on the Wall"?
The big news on that Ryan Coogler/Michael B. Jordan film is that it's going to be written by one of America's best writers, Ta-Nehisi Coates! His name seals my ticket opening weekend!
Suzanne: Coates and Coogler probably met during Black Panther's production or pre-production at some point and Coates showed him this big, important, script idea he was working on. Y'know, because Coates has been writing the Black Panther comics lately. Still, awesome.
Oh, so it's OK to show a guy reading Playboy but not OK for a girl looking at Playgirl? BOO!!!!!!
Yessss, in Australia we have the same hypocritical conservatives like you guys do. Take a look at our deputy prime minister for more
Thanks for highlighting that Australia censorship Nathaniel. I hate the fact that I didn't see Gerwig's full vision.
Just a small clarification: whilst it was the Australian Classification board that made a rating decision (and, yes, they ARE puritanical), it was ultimately Universal Australia's decision to make the cuts (all in the name of perceived profit). So they are the ones who should shoulder the blame.
I love the score for " The Greatest Showman" which you can make a modern sounding period musical which clicks with a large audience- but I would love for the song from "Call Me By Your Name to Win"
MYSTERY OF LOVE TO WIN!
I don't like This is Me and indifferent about showman
I wish they would get a move on with the next Bond film. They have a release date announced, though, so hopefully that is focusing their minds.
I like "This Is Me" but would like 'Mystery of Love" to win.
I'd like a three-way tie for "This Is Me" "Mystery of Love" and "Remember Me". But I do think "This Is Me" has this in the bag. It's the big, inspirational number that seems to have hit the zeitgest (soundtrack topping Billboard, song charting high, song also used for the Olympics) especially with its "underdogs sticking it to the man" message which is SUPER timely.
Do we need BOND 25? Can someone work on that sequel to SPY instead? I need that film a lot more than I need a 25th Bond film.
I'm not overly fussed by the LADY BIRD thing. I hope more young audiences get the chance to see because they took out one curse word and a sight gag.
I reckon "This is Me" win the song Oscar. It'll be the one everyone knows. Unless they're really just don't like it and vote for the songs from Coco or Mudbound even though nobody could hum them to save a life (as good as they are...)
I wouldn't mind if Coco loses best original song (if it does, please let it be for Mystery of Love) if only Natalia Lafourcade performs at the oscars. I hoped she could present an oscar but at least they have Daniela Vega in their list.
