Cast This: "9 to 5" Reboot

by Murtada

It seems like this is the time for reboots and remakes. Every film or TV show we’ve ever loved is getting another go. So why not the classic female workplace revenge comedy 9 to 5? It’s not like things are going great for women in the workplace 38 years on from the original,  as the last few months have shown.

Patricia Resnick, the writer of the 1980 version, is teaming up with Rashida Jones to pen this one...

Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton are expected to return but will also have a few new co-stars. The premise for this reboot is about three younger women dealing with sexism and chauvinism in the workplace. They turn to the original trio for help in navigating and getting even with male higher-ups.

So who would you cast? There is no specificity to the characters yet so let your imagination run wild.

Maybe I’m still in Wakanda where Angela Bassett beguiled me with her regal disposition and fabulous gray dreadlocks but I hope she gets one of the three parts.Obviously a Hollywood studio woud go for much younger actresses for all three parts but one can dream. Who would be your choice?

Toni Collette, Lupita Nyong'o, and to appease Hollywood, sigh, Margot Robbie.

Alan Scherstuhl has been saying for a year now and I agree: Hidden Figures Reunion!

Taraji as Jane
Janelle as Dolly
Octavia as Lily

Jennifer Lawrence in all three roles.

THE LILY TOMLIN TYPE:
Regina Hall (MAKE HER A HUGE STAR PLEASE)
Toni Collette (deserves it and would be amazing)
Melissa McCarthy (her jabs would be hilarious)
Tina Fey (too obvious but would KILL IT)
Constance Wu (razor sharp and a fun pick)
Jennifer Aniston (would be very fun)
Taraji P. Henson (she'd be amazing)

THE JANE FONDA TYPE:
Amy Adams (maybe too obvious though)
Melissa McCarthy (I could see her playing any variation of the trio)
Amy Ryan (hollywood needs to give her WAY more to do)
Naomie Harris (would be FANTASTIC)
Sarah Paulson (good in everything)
Rose Byrne (reliably good in everything)

THE DOLLY PARTON TYPE
Tiffany Haddish (she can be any of them i think)
Elizabeth Banks (she'd kill it)
Reese Witherspoon (probably too obvious)
This one is a tough one

9 to 5, like Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, is such a time-and-a-place confection. I can’t imagine it translating (well) to this day and age.

I think Darbicus has the perfect cast and make the boss a white man.

Megan Hilty for Doralee. She already has Dolly’s stamp of approval.

I just want Nicole Kidman as Roz...

I went to TV stars here and tried to find people who were the same age-ish that the three were when they made the film...

Jane Fonda = Keri Russell
Lily Tomlin = Tracee Ellis Ross
Dolly Parton = Gina Rodriguez

And for the guy, let's go with Jon Hamm.

The real surprise in this film is Fonda's performance. She goes from a woman who acts and dresses as if she is a spinster teacher to one who is quite hip.

Allison Janney, Laurie Metcalf and Tiffany Haddish. Yes, I have Oscar on the brain.

thevoid99, if one were to go with Darbicus's proposed cast -- which is fabulous, by the way -- then I think it would be more effective to insert a non-black POC in the Dabney Coleman role to show the complexity of misogynoir as extending beyond mere black and white. A white actor would be highly obvious. I dunno --- Benicio Del Toro, maybe?

March 1, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

Nicole Kidman in the Lily Tomlin role -- Kidman needs to do more comedy, and she's quite good at it (natch: To Die For).

Tiffany Haddish in the Dolly Parton role -- Haddish is hilarious and a real scene-stealer.

Hong Chau in the Jane Fonda role -- she proved with Downsizing she can role with the heavyweights, and see above.

Javier Bardem in the Dabney Coleman role? He's unctuous enough for it, and he's done comedy to great effect in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

March 1, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

Jessica Chastain, Taraji P. and Lady Gaga (who like Dolly will sing the theme song)

March 1, 2018 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

America Ferrera in the Dolly Parton role
Zoe Saldana in the Lilly Tomlin role
Anna Kendrick in the Jane Fonda role

Paul Giamatti as the boss.

How old will they be? Because you know Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Lawrence have to be on that team’s list. I suppose they’ll want to go with a younger cast then the original. Yawn.

And you know somebody in that office already said “what about Amy Shummer?”

Perhaps with everything that’s happening in Hollywood they’ll give a shot to “older” actresses, but common, it’s not gonna happen. And if is, why hasn’t anybody mentioned Kristen Wiig. Another obvious choice.

Rose Byrne (Jane), Tiffany Haddish (Dolly) and Margaret Cho (Lily). Take my money now. I want to see this happen.

March 1, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterW.J. McKelvey

Tracee Ellis Ross, Nicole Kidman, Hong Chau---that would be insane

Laura Dern-Tomlin, Gina Rodriguez-Fonda, Tiffany Haddish-Parton

MARGO MARTINDALE FOR ROZ

FOR THE DABNEY COLEMAN PART
Jon Hamm
Garrett Hedlund--a little young but they could do like the new boss who was the old boss's son, Kyle Chandler--could probably do gross and weird pretty well
DAVID HARBOUR

Can we have Ari Graynor, please? I go to bat for her for everything...

March 1, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterJoey

Let's give Aidy Bryant a lead part. Let's do that.

The boss:

Kevin Spacey

Janelle Monae? She can act (I actually think she could play any of the three parts), and I like the idea of one of the trio singing an updated version of the theme song. It's one of my favorite movie songs ever.

I like Jon Hamm as the boss.
