PT 1 - Who Should Be The Next Amy Madigan? (Team Experience Votes!)

Which actress deserves an Aunt Gladys style comeback most? Stone? Perez? Lewis? The possibilities are almost endless!

We received a really fun request from a reader (Thank you, Brian!) a week or two back. Amy Madigan rose from the dead (pop culture figuratively speaking) 40 years after her first Oscar nomination (Twice in a Lifetime discussed here) to not only break the record of the actress with the longest gap between nominations (the previous record holder being Helen Hayes at 39 years) but also went on to win the Oscar! Her comeback is instantaneously the stuff of legend which made Brian's question catnip to us. He challenged Team Experience to sound off on Who do we think should be the next Amy Madigan ? 

TO FIT THE BILL IT HAS TO BE...

• An actress with only one Oscar nomination (she lost)
• Which she received 20 or more years ago
• And she's at least 50 years of age at the moment. 

76 living women met that criteria (we eliminated people with Honorary Oscars). Once we had the eligibility list Team Experience each ranked their 10 favorites so the following communal list is the combined vote - originally we had a couple of ties so we brought in our old friend and podcast pal Nick Davis to break the ties with his own vote (though he wasn't shown our list so he didn't know what ties he might be breaking!). #1 rankings on each ballot were worth ten points, #2 rankings nine points, and so on. Inspired by Juan Carlos’ very fun and smart examination of the actresses in Nashville, I thought it might be fun to do the same for the many actresses in Short Cuts.  Here’s a report of my favorites from least to most…with the caveat that even the “least” are beautifully played by these super talented ladies.

10 Lili Taylor as Honey Bush
Taylor has possibly the least to do of any of the actresses, but it was joyful to see her again and be reminded of that fresh, weird, thrilling energy she brought to cinema in the 1990s.  Hollywood never figured out what to do with her, even though she’s worked continuously.  Here she’s yearning and touching, and she and Robert Downey Jr (before he got so self-conscious) find a quirky comic spark...

Robert Altman @ 100: “Nashville”

To continue celebrating Robert Atman’s centennial anniversary, I have decided to finally take care of a longtime cinematic blind spot: his seminal 1975 opus Nashville. Released during the heyday of New Hollywood, the film tracks the lives of twenty-four main characters — singers, dreamers, and others — as they navigate their lives in the titular city within five days as the presidential campaign of a populist candidate is set to mount a political rally cum concert. 

For my first encounter with this film, I decided to watch this film twice within a three-day period. And how powerful the experience is...

Review: "80 For Brady" is a winning comedy

Good timing! 80 For Brady is opening the week before the Super Bowl but it's also opening in the thick of Oscar season, the Super Bowl for movie lovers.  Making it feel yet more timely is the fact that its main quartet consists entirely of actresses with Oscar pedigree. A hard push for "80 For Brady". Will you see it?

Though the talk this time of year is mostly around Oscar, the new comedy 80 For Brady claimed some space of its own this week in the media as it gears up to open in theaters. The movie "inspired by the true story offour best friends living life to the fullest when they take a wild trip to the 2017 Super Bowl LI to see their hero Tom Brady play"  premiered at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. It's gorgeous quartet of superstars (pictured above) were there "FONDA! MORENO! TOMLIN! FIELD!" Between them they have 12 Emmys, 8 Golden Globes, 5 Oscars, 2 Grammys, 2 Tonys, and numerous other awards, nominations, special honors, and lifetime achievement prizes.  But that's not all in 80 for Brady news...
