Interview: Grace & Frankie's Emmy-nominated costume designers

by Nathaniel R

One of the most satisfying moments of Emmy nomination morning was the contemporary costume nomination for Grace & Frankie. The Netflix sitcom starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin is hot off its third and best season. The writers and creative team seem to know the characters and their interpersonal dynamics, in and out at this point. That intimacy is abundanctly evidence in the terrific costuming. Until the television Academy split off their costume design category into period and contemporary, their was little opportunity for designers who specialize in contemporary clothing to be honored no matter how strong their work - exceptions like Sex and the City were all too rare.

I had the opportunity to discuss Grace & Frankie's worthy and vibrant work with its three nominees Allyson B Fanger the costume designer, Heather Pain, her assistant costume designer, and Lori DeLapp the costume supervisor. Their overlapping answers, despite their separate duties, and light ribbing over the abundance of statement piece jewelry worn by Frankie were ample evidence that they're totally in synch.

That's true whether or not their subjects Grace (Jane Fonda) and Frankie (Lily Tomlin) are seeing eye to eye in any given episode...

Grace and Frankie, Season 3: Return to Form

By Spencer Coile

A good series is not born overnight. Oftentimes, the pilot episode is not indicative of the quality a show might have down the road. Even if it is incredible, the series still runs a risk of running off the rails in subsequent seasons (Desperate Housewives). Still, there is something especially rewarding about a series that, after two lackluster seasons, can come back swinging in its third. And after indulging in half of its third outing, it is safe to say that Grace and Frankie has carved out a very unique space for its viwers.

Picking up shortly where season two left off, season three to Grace and Frankie finds its two leading characters developing their own sex toy business geared toward older women. Of course, this is all easier said than done. After all, they still are an odd couple. Meanwhile, their ex-husbands Sol and Robert, neogotiate issues of retirement, gay culture, and coming out at such an old age. And of course you cannot forget all of their children, grounding all of the "adult" happenings with a strange twinge of immaturity.

But what makes the latest offering from Grace and Frankie better than its previous two seasons?

Congratulations, Lily Tomlin!

Photographed by Sebastian Kim for Interview

Lily Tomlin will be honored with SAG's Lifetime Achievement Award at this January's ceremony. SAG is strong with the actress-loving (unlike Oscar). This marks the 4th year in a row that the award has gone to a woman following Carol Burnett, Debbie Reynolds, and Rita Moreno.

We celebrated Lily a lot here last year with a look at her filmography, my own top 10 choices amongst her performances and I was proud to be on the poster for Grandma extolling her virtues so we've already had our say. I only ask that during the clip reel they show something from I ♥️ Huckabees (2004) because I'll never get enough of that character. I wish she and Dustin Hoffman could do a whole series about them or at least occasional webisodes of the further adventures of Vivian and Bernard, Existential Detectives.
