REVIEW - Last Christmas

"Just saw a 7:00pm Thursday night show in Los Angeles. As flawed/imperfect as the film is, its quite winning due in a large part to some heavy lifting by Emilia Clarke. She’s got a real Sandra Bullock/Julia Roberts star power on full display here.-HardyofHearing

Say What? Uma and Matt in "The House That Jack Built"

Amuse us with a line of dialogue or a caption for this first image of Uma Thurman with Matt Dillon in serial killer film The House That Jack Built. A new poster and Cannes news after the jump...

Sadly Uma is only third billed so given her level of fame we expect she's not in much of the movie. Perhaps a victim? Or the killer's wife? We have high hopes nonetheless, at least for her portion of the film. Though we love Uma deeply she can be uneven as an actor. Her short role in Von Trier's Nymphomaniac proved to be one of her best performances so crossing our fingers that magic strikes twice.

Serial killer shenanigans feel like such a basic choice for Denmark's eternal provocateur Lars von Trier who usually chooses far less traditional subgenres or plot drivers to upset audiences. Say what you will about the man or his films but nobody else would have dreamt up Melancholia, Antichrist, The Idiots, Breaking the Waves ...or basically any of 'em.

Speaking of "say what?"
It was recently announced that The House That Jack Built will be playing out of competition at Cannes. The festival has a long and complicated history with the mad Dane. Cannes is making that relationship even more complex by labelling the always controversial director "a victim" of that whole bad-taste Melancholia press conference which got him banned from Cannes for awhile. This seems like a really strange thing to say about a director who actively courts reprobation! As my friend Nigel said on twitter the other day

Look, I'm a huge Lars von Trier fan. But the director of the Film Festival calling him a "victim" in ANY context is a horrible PR move. Mon dieu!

Pretty much.

Lars is a victim of cancel culture. The European film community's response to Me Too and Times Up is refreshingly adult. Indifferent to the feelings of the accusers for the most mild of sexual offenses.

Caption?

Uma: So, you haven't been in a superhero movie? Dodged that bullet.
Matt: Yeah. But I was in Rock Dog and Herbie: Fully Loaded. So, embarrassment all around.

Your only Oscar nomination was for Crash. Mine was for Pulp Fiction. Who wins that battle?

Uma: So, what have you been up to?
Matt: I don't know. I've been given scripts to so many bad films. Even the stuff that Gus sent me wasn't good.
Uma: I feel ya. Fucking Weinstein ruined me. He is the reason me and Quentin aren't talking right now.
Matt: I hate Weinstein.

She gets killed in this very scene. Zentropa invited a lot of journalists last year to visit the set and the scene they were filming was her death. She's her first victim. Basically, he needed a star and she made him a favor. Riley Keough also plays one oh the victims.

Uma: So, Matt, thanks for coming to my birthday party on April 29th. Can't wait to unwrap your gift. You're so sweet.

PS: Uma is really scary in her assassin role on the tv series "The Imposters". Smiley, scary. Please don't come after me.

Sorry, but I'm dreading this movie. I'm so over this serial killer phase in cinema and television, and god only knows how many gruesome female murders there will be in this movie. Lars has lost it...and Nymphomaniac was shit. Truly awful all around.

Uma (thought bubble); Yummy, he is to die for!

Matt (thought bubble): Heh, heh.
