MTV Movie & TV Award Nominees

by Nathaniel R

We lost interest in the MTV Movie Awards during the looooong stretch of them turning into the (which year is this?) blur of franchise awards with Harry's Twilight Hunger Games. But let's check back in since nominees were announced a few days ago and voting is now open.

And Oops! spoke to soon in the previous post on the GLAAD Awards. The GLAAD honor wasn't the last hurrah for Call Me By Your Name. Timothée Chalamet, the internet's current boyfriend, is up for an MTV Movie Award for his performance. That he's up against Rey in Star Wars and T'Challa in Black Panther indicates that he'll lose given that the public votes on these awards and that movie earned basically a ha'penny when compared to its competition. But hey, we're part of the public. We can vote now! Because the MTV Awards have a school year schedule, Avengers Infinity War (April 2018) is competing with Wonder Woman (June 2017) for best movie though we all know Black Panther will win. More after the jump...

BEST MOVIE

  • Avengers: Infinity War (Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)
  • Black Panther (Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)
  • Girls Trip (Universal Pictures)
  • IT (New Line Cinema)
  • Wonder Woman (Warner Bros. Pictures)

Girls Trip is the box office weakling here (lol) but that's only in relative terms -- $140 million globally is pretty damn great (if you aren't a superhero or animated movie). We suspect Black Panther won't have any trouble winning this.

BEST SHOW

  • 13 Reasons Why (Netflix)
  • Game of Thrones (HBO)
  • grown-ish (Freeform)
  • Riverdale (The CW)
  • Stranger Things (Netflix)

This category is only two years old since MTV only recently decided to go MOVIES & TV (like Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards) Stranger Things won last year.

BEST PERFORMANCE IN A MOVIE

  • Chadwick Boseman – Black Panther
  • Timothée Chalamet – Call Me by Your Name
  • Ansel Elgort – Baby Driver
  • Daisy Ridley – Star Wars: The Last Jedi
  • Saoirse Ronan – Lady Bird

Ohmygod, a nominee in their 40s! Chadwick Boseman is a young looking 40 but still. Occassionally a Best Performance nominee will be in their 40s but this award is like the polar opposite of the Oscars with age ranges (Well, except that both shows love women in their 20s.) I believe the only nominees ever for this top acting prize who were 50 or older) number just three: Denzel Washington for American Gangster (2008), Bill Murray for Lost in Translation (2003) and Samuel L Jackson for Jackie Brown (1998).

BEST PERFORMANCE IN A SHOW

  • Millie Bobby Brown – Stranger Things
  • Darren Criss – The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
  • Katherine Langford – 13 Reasons Why
  • Issa Rae – Insecure
  • Maisie Williams – Game of Thrones

BEST HERO

  • Chadwick Boseman (T’Challa/Black Panther) – Black Panther
  • Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) – Game of Thrones
  • Gal Gadot (Diana Prince/Wonder Woman) – Wonder Woman
  • Grant Gustin (Barry Allen/The Flash) – The Flash
  • Daisy Ridley (Rey) – Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Given that all of these nominees (barring The Flash) are legit blockbusters who do you think will win?

BEST VILLAIN

  • Josh Brolin (Thanos) – Avengers: Infinity War
  • Adam Driver (Kylo Ren) – Star Wars: The Last Jedi
  • Michael B. Jordan (N’Jadaka/Erik Killmonger) – Black Panther
  • Aubrey Plaza (Lenny Busker) – Legion
  • Bill Skarsgard (Pennywise) – IT

I mean Michael B Jordan wins this with ease right?

BEST KISS

  • Jane the Virgin – Gina Rodriguez (Jane) and Justin Baldoni (Rafael)
  • Love, Simon – Nick Robinson (Simon) and Keiynan Lonsdale (Bram)
  • Ready Player One – Olivia Cooke (Sam) and Tye Sheridan (Wade)
  • Riverdale – KJ Apa (Archie) and Camila Mendes (Veronica)
  • Stranger Things – Finn Wolfhard (Mike) and Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven)

This category has often had its political and juvenile issues (like kissing is gross nominees and such) but it's nice that gay kisses are nominated with regularity.

MOST FRIGHTENED PERFORMANCE

  • Talitha Bateman (Janice) – Annabelle: Creation
  • Emily Blunt (Evelyn Abbott) – A Quiet Place
  • Sophia Lillis (Beverly Marsh) – IT
  • Cristin Milioti (Nanette Cole) – Black Mirror
  • Noah Schnapp (Will Byers) – Stranger Things

This is a fun category. I would (surprise!) actually vote for Noah Schnapp here. Excellent and haunted.

BEST ON-SCREEN TEAM (NEW CATEGORY)

  • Black Panther – Chadwick Boseman (T’Challa/ Black Panther), Lupita Nyong’o (Nakia), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Letitia Wright (Shuri)
  • IT – Finn Wolfhard (Richie), Sophia Lillis (Beverly), Jaeden Lieberher (Bill), Jack Dylan Grazer (Eddie), Wyatt Oleff (Stanley), Jeremy Ray Taylor (Ben), Chosen Jacobs (Mike)
  • Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle – Dwayne Johnson (Smolder), Kevin Hart (Mouse), Jack Black (Shelly), Karen Gillan (Ruby), Nick Jonas (Seaplane)
  • Ready Player One – Tye Sheridan (Wade), Olivia Cooke (Samantha), Philip Zhao (Sho), Win Morisaki (Daito), Lena Waithe (Aech)
  • Stranger Things – Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin), Finn Wolfhard (Mike), Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas), Noah Schnapp (Will), Sadie Sink (Max)

BEST COMEDIC PERFORMANCE

  • Jack Black – Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
  • Tiffany Haddish – Girls Trip
  • Dan Levy – Schitt’s Creek
  • Kate McKinnon – SNL
  • Amy Schumer – I Feel Pretty

Jim Carrey is the all time winner of the category with five wins over the years. The only previous winner nominated here is Jack Black. It seems certain that Tiffany Haddish wins this (and deserves to) but I'm glad Amy Schumer is nominated. I Feel Pretty is so much funnier than it gets credit for. It's like people wanted to hate it but it's a total rebound win, relatively speaking, after Snatched

SCENE STEALER (NEW CATEGORY)

  • Tiffany Haddish (Dina) – Girls Trip
  • Dacre Montgomery (Billy Hargrove) – Stranger Things
  • Madelaine Petsch (Cheryl Blossom) – Riverdale
  • Taika Waititi (Korg) – Thor: Ragnarok
  • Letitia Wright (Shuri) – Black Panther

BEST FIGHT

  • Atomic Blonde – Charlize Theron (Lorraine) vs. Daniel Hargrave (Sniper), Greg Rementer (Spotter)
  • Avengers: Infinity War – Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch) vs. Carrie Coon (Proxima Midnight)
  • Black Panther – Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) vs. Winston Duke (M’Baku)
  • Thor: Ragnarok – Mark Ruffalo (Hulk) vs. Chris Hemsworth (Thor)
  • Wonder Woman – Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) vs. German Soldiers

Really good nominees here, don't you think?! All three of the 2017 nominees were also nominated right here at the Film Bitch Awards under "Best Action Sequence"

BEST MUSIC DOCUMENTARY

  • Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop: A Bad Boy Story
  • Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated
  • Gaga: Five Foot Two
  • Jay-Z’s “Footnotes for 4:44”
  • The Defiant Ones

BEST REALITY SERIES/FRANCHISE

  • The Kardashians
  • Love & Hip Hop
  • Real Housewives
  • RuPaul's Drag Race
  • Vanderpump Rules

I mean the best choice is obvious.

Fairuza Balk and Robin Tunney winning Best Fight for THE CRAFT is why I just can't quit the MTV Movie Awards.

The MTV Movie Awards would be far more enjoyable if they weren’t a clarion call for whom the Internet finds most fuckable at any given moment in history.

These categories are not well thought out , so best comedic performance is combined, but best performance in a movie and best performance in a tv show are separate, and saorise ronan is in best performance in a movie but not in best comedic perfromance so that means even though she was top 5 as far as movies go but not better than Haddish or Schumer, so bye girl? LOL.

The nominees are whatever and always weird given the nomination window, but mostly I'm glad someone else felt more positive about I Feel Pretty than the general consensus! I was honestly shocked by how much I enjoyed it given the terrible reviews.

If Best Frightened Performance doesn't go to Emily Blunt for "A Quiet Place," then the category shouldn't exist. Its sole purpose should be to acknowledge performances like this one, b/c the Oscars sure as hell won't do it.

Am I the only one who thinks Girls Trip just isn't that funny?

This is not a demographic of movie goers I generally find myself aligned with but I will admit that so many of the nominees are fun. Love the shout-outs to Emily Blunt, Michael B Jordan, Taika Waititi, Letitia Wight, and Bill Skarsgaard. Also the awesome No Man’s Land and Atomic Blond fight scenes. I will say through that that kiss award contains a lot of spoilers! :)

Ready Player One for best kiss? Really?

And Blunt and Schnapp are both fantastic nominees for that category. And what a great category, as sustaining heightened fear like that isn't easy and is often an underrated skill.
