Thoughts I Had... "Aquaman"
Chris here. What hath Star Wars the need to fill the calendar with weekly franchises wrought: we are getting an Aquaman movie this Christmas. No matter because it marks Nicole Kidman's return to superhero fare, which means COSTUMES! 'Gowns, beautiful gowns.'
Today we got our very first glimpse of Nicole as Aquaman's queen mother Atlanna on the Entertainment Weekly cover to the left. But with this exciting news comes the realization that the film... looks really promising? Perhaps DC can shed its Batman/Superman woes (if not match their Wonder Woman highs) thanks to director James Wan and his long proven ability to thrill. Wan has previously given us horror greats Insidious and The Conjuring, not to mention Furious 7, the most beloved of that particular franchise.
With this cover comes a slew of new images, and I have thoughts...
- That's not an otherwordly sunset, it's just Nicole's natural aura.
- Does this child (we're assuming baby Aquaman, or Aquababy) know what a gift this loving embrace is from Nicole? What is this baby's favorite Kidman performance? My money is on Dogville.
- The color palette is giving me Far and Away, but Gay.
- No, this isn't Ant-Man. It's Yahya Absul-Mateen II as one of the film's villains, Black Manta.
- Aquaman will apparently be an ode to arms and who am I to complain?
- Black Manta isn't the big baddie though. Those honors goe to Patrick Wilson (yep, that's him on the right) as King Orm. Orm-agerd!
- But maybe the real main villain is Wilson's hairstylist? Is that a hair fin or a manbun?
- Live footage from our collective flooded basements.
- Did I fully glaze over during Justice League and forget or has Aquaman gotten more ink?
- Momoa is actually fairly funny and charismatic in the role thus far but it was the least utilized hero of League. With him at the forefront, it will be interesting to see how he holds his own.

It looks really bad. And that chick in green looks like Uma Thurman's Poison Ivy.
Yeah... it doesn't look good.
Unfortunately looks like the typical mom role in a superhero movie for Nicole. Diane Lane's comes first to mind. And the costumes... oh well. Let's wait for the trailer then
I don't know--I think this could be good, or at least decent. I'm encouraged by the choice of director and the bright color palette. I'm feeling optimistic.
It's gonna be awesome. About time for Jason to be in a good movie, he has amazing presence. Wan is gonna deliver
It just looks ridiculous.
Tired of all these kinds of movies.
Nicole Kidman looks like a Mr. Freeze lieutenant on the Entertainment Weekly cover.
@JJM - Totally agree about the bright color palette. Most DCEU stuff barely believes in anything except grayscale, let alone saturated anything. This is a nice change, even if Amber Heard's wig is . . . . questionable.
I'll wait for the reviews. Hasn't steered me wrong yet for a DCEU film.
I don't usually see any of the superheroes movies, all that action etc is just not for me. I was always curious why Mark Ruffalo chose to be in one. But Patrick Wilson participating is really interesting. I guess actors who want to keep working feel they need to have some cred of some sort in these films. Patrick usually goes for arty films. Jason Momoa is the only man in the world that doesn't turn me off because of his massive tatts. He is just splendid to look at. But as far as how good this movie will be, I have no clue.
Michelle Pfeiffer as mom Janet van Dyne in Ant Man and the Wasp will be 1,000 times better than Nicole Kidman and Diane Lane's superhero mom roles. Janet van Dyne, as the original Wasp and founding member of the Avengers, has a fully developed backstory, a ton of action sequences to possibly perform on film, and future plots that could continue in multiple Ant Man, Captain Marvel, and Avengers sequels.
I don't like Pfeiffer being in the MCU either, but at least we know she isn't going to stay home for the next five years. If we are lucky, maybe she can do a summer movie and a fall movie in the same year.
Uh... I don't know.
*squints eyes* Is... that.... .color in those pictures......???
Flop!
That cover looks like pure camp
Maybe so only for La Kidman and Amber Heard, who always intrigues me.
Looks really bad. I just don’t think these actors can succeed together but maybe it will be a holiday miracle.
PS, it’s sad if that cover is the best that CAA can do for NK now
These pictures are giving me some severe Beuwolf vibes. And in the fun campy way.
You guys know that you can enjoy superhero movies and still be a movie buff, right?
This pretentious attitude some of you have towards that genre going by the comments here is just headassery to the max.
Bee -- i still enjoy them. well, not really the DC movies which are *way* too self-serious. But otherwise, I do.
Isn't Fast Five the F&F movie held in the most esteem?
Who is Aquaman's dad? Because there's no way two people as lily white as Nicole could produce a fine-looking Polynesian man like Jason Mamoa.
The new extended trailer released for Aquaman. This trailer gives us like 5 minutes and 20 seconds of the movie. Which both I love and hate. I feel like I don’t wanna see another trailer cause if I do it will pretty much be the whole movie. But I love every second that I get of this movie as well.
