Short but sweet today as we're pressed for time. The Incredibles 2 had a gargantuan opening weekend, one of the ten biggest of all time and the biggest for an animated film (a record previously held by another sequel Finding Dory). I'm off to see it right about now actually!
What did you see this weekend?

Saw Hereditary,Collette for the nomination,I wasn't scared but needs a rewatch, some disturbing stuff for sure, misleading trailers, love me some Anne Dowd.
Incredibles 2 and the short Bao. A great double feature that was fun and full of heart.
Incredibles 2 - too loud, too much, too in love with itself. The baby is funny, but it’s an exhausting movie.
Jessica Jones, Season 2 - really good with clever performances.
Gotta love superhero fatigue, huh?
Tom Ford: Not terrible (I don't think Marvel Netflix is going to drop another Iron Fist Season 1 on us) (I'm even cautiously optimistic about Iron Fist Season 2), but definitely a "Daredevil Season 2" situation in terms of being a quality drop. They don't need shorter seasons, they need a more episodic approach to their content (still with a TV- MA approach, but not the one they're actually doing) and they need to not be so committed to the "Wire fanfic" aesthetic.
I saw and hated "Hereditary" gets my vote as worst movie of the year. It starts off as a serious drama about a family in mourning even if the soundtrack works over time with the ominous music- but once Toni Collete reveals her over the top family story at the grief group I could not stop rolling my eyes. The second part of the film seems to have been inspired by a schlocky made for tv movie called " The Devil's Daughter" (1972) with the great Shelly Winters . I would really like to know how anyone can compare this to "The Exorcist" ?
Summer 1993. Just beautiful.
Saw Hereditary, loved it - was equally impressed by Alex Wolff and Toni Collette. Hoping Collette pulls out the nomination.
I saw Hereditary and honestly thought it was a masterpiece. Fun that it's so divisive.
Didn't see anything this weekend, but A Wrinkle in Time magically crossed the century mark at the box office in its 15th week. I wonder how Disney accomplished that...it grossed $1.7 million this weekend on 245 screens It's also been on BLU/DVD for a couple of weeks now. Was it a surge in dollar theater BO? Did Oprah and Reese buy those tix to give it a lift? What's the deal?
Also saw Hereditary--found it very disturbing and it stayed with me. I liked it a lot.
Incredibles 2 was good - but it was Pixar's Force Awakens moment. Complete rehash of the first plot. Welcome to the Incredibles cinematic universe.
But if we have to have more Incredibles, at least Holly Hunter (to no one's surprise) has created Pixar's greatest character. I'd watch Elastigirl in anything.
SoSue... all studios, not just Disney, have the option to bundle movies together for a double feature at a drive-in for example. The $ from that is added to the gross of both films. So in this case A Wrinkle in TIme probably was double featured with The Incredibles 2. Black Panther and/or Infinity Wars also benefited slightly (Black Panther went up 6% from last weekend even though it lost theaters and Infinity Wars had the lowest drop of the top 10). Disney will likely do the same with both of those films with the release of Ant Man in a few weeks.
It's not exactly the most honest bookkeeping practice, but they all do it.
I hate Holly Hunter’s grating hillbilly voice.
And I think Holly Hunter's voice is a national treasure.
Wow...thanks Ryan. Did not consider the double-feature angle...I guess they still do that!
Ryan T -- WOW. i didn't know this. So i guess Black Panther will pass 700 million after all because it was looking like it wasn't going to (just like a few hundred thousand shy but i'll they'll have to do is bundle it. like this for one last push.

WON'T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR? made my heart melt.
Yeah. A Wrinkle In Time is one of the more egregious cases though. They've done everything in their power to push it to $100 million. It also increased twice when both Solo and Infinity Wars opened despite losing theaters both those weekends.
Haven't made it to a theater but I finally watched The Wings of the Dove. HBC was just fantastic in a subtle but emotionally turbulent performance. She can say so much with just her eyes.
Also saw Downsizing. What a weird movie. It kept taking turns I never saw coming, but it also dragged in places. The structure and pace were just so odd. But Hong Chau was fantastic.
Wow, Ryan's comment really made me remember double features from my childhood. They were pretty standard for any movie that had been out for a while.
The best movie I saw this weekend was on PBS' " Man with the Orange Shirt" a great romantic gay film
I saw "The Seagull". It started off reminding me of Michelle Pfieffer's "Midsummer's Night Dream" and "Smiles of a Summer's Night". But it became more Russian and gloomy.
The cast is wonderful. The movie is so short, they really cut it down. Annette Bening is wonderful, but not in it so much. I wondered if they might try a "we're all supporting players in this ensemble" and promote her as a Best Supporting Actress.
I also saw "Ocean's 8" for a second time.
I pretended I hadn't seen it yet for this group of friends.
Is that wrong? Does anyone else do that?
I just didn't want to see their awful second choice, and I thought they'd like this one well enough (they did). When I do this, I say very little after, not wanting to give myself away.
I continue to have concerns that Sandra Bullock's face is partially immobile but we can't talk about it. The NY Times essay on redoing guy movies and the limitations is a good read. Westworld 2. What is it? Vague and creates disinterest, like Anthony Hopkins ignoring his own family. Strange times.
I loved the first season of "West World" but could not get into this one at all- perhaps the show should have been just one great film instead.
