If only voodoo dolls were real...

Michelle Pfeiffer as the sorceress "Lamia" in Stardust... think of all the practical applications during this particular precipice in human history.

When the Republicans said and did nothing after Charlottesville... That was the beginning of the end.

July 10, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterTyler

Voodoo dolls exist but only specialized people can make use of them and they don't work "against" everybody. Some people are more vulnerable than others. They don't work exactly like fiction treat them, but they are real and dangerous.

By the way... Stardust is a fun movie and the cast seems to be having fun. It's great to see Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert De Niro, Sienna Miller, Mark Strong and others out of their usual dramatic sets. Claire Danes, for me, is a big mistake that doesn't get in the way of the entire movie, nothing that the leading actor Charlie Cox, perfect as the hero, can not repair. But my favorite cast member has always been and will forever be Melanie Hill as the rival witch in the way of Michelle Pfeiffer and the movie's couple. Michelle Pfeiffer playing witches at different moments of her long career and practicing voodoo ...

geez, everything has to turn political nowadays. so tiring.

You wouldn't want to use a voodoo doll...think of the negative karma that would bring to you.

July 10, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterSoSue

SoSue -- I would gladly sacrifice my own karma at this point to save the future of the entire country and countless lives. Fascists regimes have high body counts... they have to make the dissenters disappear. That's what Putin does to stay in power and we know that Trump idolizes him.

Huh -- get used to it. America is in deep shit. If you don't realize you're going to lose your civil rights, violence against minorities will increase, and voting will reflect the will of the people less and less than you haven't been paying attention. ACTUAL SELF-PROCLAIMED NAZIS AND WHITE SUPREMACISTS ARE RUNNING FOR GOP SEATS. I wish you well but WAKE UP. This shit is apocalyptic. I dont know how we're going to survive it.

The countries where belief in Witchcraft and Voodoo seems to be widely held also seem to be some of the most dysfunctional in the world. In thinking about some African countries where terrible people have held power for years, does this mean that there is no magic from the populace that could bring down the bad ruler or that the bad ruler had stronger magic? I conclude there is no magic but I know many people think their rulers (warlords, presidents, generals) have strong magic.

I believe voodoo dolls don't work against the antichrist and his apostates.

On UK TV a programme was on about The NY Times and their reporting on Trump and I must say they are totally biased against him and his supporters.

Trump followers/voters love him and admire him and when they all turned round at a Trump rally in Phoenix and made the media flee at Trumps beckoning it was gobsmacking, the power Trump had on those people blacks, gays, women and ordinairy folk was something to see and something Uk media fails to report as did the Usa papers.

A family whose house renovation benefit had been cut by Trump would still have voted for him and want a wall bulit, seemed like nice people not Nazi's or the like, just 2 working people exercising the right to free specch and democracy in the voting system.

here In the UK it's shameful how the London mayor is behaing, allowing a Blow Up balloon to fly in the aire, they's never have done this to Obama

Some people are happy about his visit and some not so but we should tread carefully and treat with the respect the office of the President which a lot US citizens voted for.

Those who dislike Trump call me when the apocalypse happens.

July 11, 2018 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

Wow, the makeup artist in that film had some work to do. It looks like she's Pfeiffer's regular makeup artist - she was Oscar-nominated for Batman Returns.

It's your site, you should talk about whatever you want. I have had trouble thinking about much else since Kennedy retired.

Donald Trump’s campaign manager IS IN JAIL.

5 members of his campaign have PLEAD GUILTY to charges brought by the Mueller probe.

And the media is acting like it’s perfectly normal that this obviously guilty man is going to NAME HIS OWN JUDGE.

WAKE THE FUCK UP.

Nathaniel - I will just get on my political soap box one more time this week to support you and any others who are scared by political events in the U.S.
As someone who came of age in the 70's during the Vietnam war and Watergate I can say that speaking up and staying informed is vital.
I'm more nervous now because articles on Amy Adams get 70 comments and anything political gets very few responses or is derided. Sleepwalking off the cliff...
Either you are resisting this Authoritarian corrupt regime or you are part of the problem. Complacency is not a refuge or an excuse during these troubled times.
Take heart, take action, and above all vote. (While you still can)

July 11, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterLadyEdith

LadyEdith I feel more awake and informed now than I ever did.

July 11, 2018 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

Or as Pasolini already said in the 70s, claiming to be innocent and or ignorant of what goes around is no longer an acceptable choice

July 11, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterToby Dammit

Just like it's increasingly to difficult to separate art from the artist who does a really bad thing, it's difficult to APPRECIATE art while a shitstorm that could possibly change all of our lives is swirling around. I come to this blog for respite, to read about movies, theater, TV, and the folks who make it happen, but I certainly love and appreciate the fact that anyone who has a platform (Nathaniel!) is also speaking out about the state of the world. Because we need LOUD voices!

In other words, if Nathaniel thinks it's ok to debate Hillary Swank's two Oscars AND the possibility that Voodoo dolls might be real enough to inflict damage on the T**** Administration, then it should be ok for anyone else coming to this site. I get so annoyed when someone tells a sports person, or entertainment person to shut up and do that thing (sport, entertain). No! Damn it!

July 11, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterPam

Agreed but we all can't have similar opinions on Trump, every 1 feels very different in their attitude toward him,I for one can see he has done good things for the USA yet has done others that aren't to be condoned but people can't go around ignoring any positive effect he's had for those millions of USA citizens who voted for him, they felt they didn't have a voice under Obama now they do.

July 11, 2018 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

I will make a call out for people who are forlorn or feel lost in this current state-please volunteer for campaigns. It's not scary once you start, and as someone who has volunteered for many, many, campaigns through the years it's always discouraging when I see people who feel left out or hopeless in the face of political odds, and pray they are volunteering to turn that discouragement into action. Every campaign has to leave doors unknocked, phones uncalled because they don't have enough volunteers. If you've only got solid blue seats on your ballot, look in your area-a neighboring district (either congressional or legislative) may have a competitive race that could use your help. Take a day and go volunteer for them-you'll feel like you're contributing in a tangible way other than just voting, and you'll make a real difference.

Sorry, had to add that as someone who regularly helps campaigns & is always struggling to find volunteers to help the cause.

July 11, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterJohn T

markgordonuk-

Fuck that. What good things has he done for the US?
Excuse me if I don't feel all warm and happy that now racists and bigots have a voice.

July 11, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterMallinkrodt

Voodoo dolls are real.

July 11, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterDeborah Lipp

@MALLINKRODT

The economy is on the up,more African American employed since before Obama took power, those are his contributions also he is cutting taxes,a conservative now sits on the supreme court who will oppose abortion rights for those who think it is wrong,Has Isis in retreat and the record high on the stock market and at least got Kim Jong talk to talk.

Not saying other views and behaviour isn't correct but the truth on Trump is out there if you know what papers to read and what non biased TV to watch

July 11, 2018 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

he cut taxes for THE RICH. He did not one damn thing for the middle class and people who need it. You really need to educate yourself on the tax scam that was passed.

July 11, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterMallinkrodt

Markgordonuk.

Holy shit you Really are going to try to make it sound like limited and women’s reproductive rights is a good thing get out of here

July 11, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

Some religious groups don't condone it,I am no saying i do or don't.

July 11, 2018 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

What LadyEdith and Pam said. These are not ordinary times, and while it's ok to use entertainment as a temporary escape from the reality shitshow that is going on right now, entertainment would lose all value if it were to completely ignore or shut out anything that could be construed as "political."

Keep speaking up, Nathaniel. But take breaks if/when you can, it'll help keep you sane.

July 11, 2018 | Unregistered Commenterlylee

The problem, as much as I agree with you, Nathaniel is that hysteria and cries of despair from most people in these comments only contribute to the problem. Whilst everybody is crying 'racist! transphobic! oh the humanity!' he'll get in again.

Keep a level head, step back from the hysteria and calmly point out his deficiencies and he'll be out sooner. It may seem like you're not doing enough, but lefty hysteria and tantrums shows YOU guys up, and that's what got him in the first time round. The more you kick and scream, the more your non-partisan observers say 'jeeez' and vote for Trump.

July 12, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterBrenda

It's nice to see that Hillary has found something to do with her time.
