Gervais is Golden again
Bucking the would be trend of hostless awards ceremonies, Ricky Gervais will host the Golden Globes this year on January 5th on NBC. The ceremony is noteably two days before final Oscar ballots are due so those speeches could matter. This is the fifth time Gervais has hosted and his blurb sounds threatening if you know how harsh his humour can get with Hollywood’s A list…
This is the very last time I’m doing this, which could make for a fun evening.”
We like the idea of Hollywood titans having a sense of humor about themselves but we much prefer the kind of ribbing that say Tina Fey & Amy Poehler are willing to do than the more scorched earth vibe of Gervais. But to each their own. Perhaps some of you love Gervais in this particular gig? If so speak up and tell us why.

I kinda like Gervais' scorched earth takedowns lol.
I find it hilarious that any PG barbs that Gervais throws are considered scorched earth. I'll watch and enjoy the night, then I will hate everything written about it the next morning.
I will always prefer Gervais to people sharing candies with George W. Bush.
Since 45 is president, can anyone sincerely complain about the unpleasantness of a standup?
Gervais is not funny hosting this show. Not my cuppa tea. I'm already picturing his fake laughing telling his jokes and raising his drinking glass. Groan.
I can't stand any comedian who laughs at his own naughtiness but I'll try to make it through.

Once again /3rtfl posts comments that make no sense.
Gervais is a truth teller and that's why I like him hosting, then it's not all slapping backs and kissing rear ends.
I watch awards shows to celebrate the movies, not to watch people be uncomfortable. I'd be fine if they just didn't have a host, but this is probably enough for me to want to skip the first ten minutes of the Globes this year.
This is disappointing. He thrives off of being negative & his humor lacks wit. Also, his delivery is cringeworthy.
Wow, You gave me a hardon, Peggy!
@ Mark. Does it suck being that stupid?
Uninspired choice. Last year they went so left field with the hosts, was expecting an interesting pairing like that.
a) Miles, your post was the definition of unnecessary.
b) Gervais can be really funny, but he tends to think punching down is funnier than it is.

what is with all the negativity in the comments lately? lay nice with each other. we're all here to discuss films and awards shows because we like them!
Ew
I love Gervais, especially when he is hosting the Globes. Last year's duo marked a new low. It was an unmitigated disaster.
While I agree, I'd prefer the humour of Amy & Tina (that James Cameron joke will forever by an all-time favourite) ... I'm still happy that a) the show will have a host (I hate this hostless nonsense) b) that it's Ricky coming back. I know his style isn't for everyone (my grandma has already phoned to let me know she won't be watching), but for me, it's always fun to watch the celebs squirm as Ricky knocks them down a peg. My favourite is his takedown of the HFPA themselves :) I'll watch gleefully :)
He's neither here nor there at this point. The key to watch the Globes is to get as drunk as the celebs. Then it can't be that bad.
JW hit the nail on the head. The biggest problem with Gervais is his delivery. Another comedian could perform the exact same material in a more genial way, but that self-satisfied smirk and disingenuous giggling after every failed punchline is immediately souring.
When Ricky host the Globes i have the impression that he is making a roast using the tabloid-gossip-news about celebrities making the atmosphere feels uncofourtable and stop being fun.
Is a little disappointing because the witty humor he uses in his shows is totally wasted here.
I also prefer Tina & Amy as hosts because i feel they are less agressive mocking people like the joke that Troy mentioned above.
The moment when they played the game Would you rather?: Alejandro G. Iñarritu or Richard Linklater, THAT is a joke about films and the people behind movies.
I would retire my username but the copycats would just follow. I'm only responsible for the initial rely.
Not a fan
I love it when Gervais insults people. Especially all of those rich and glamorous.
can anyone sincerely complain about the unpleasantness of a standup?
"Yes."

Ugh. He is so insufferably smug.
Please ignore the last copycat trying to continue the charade. Let me leave with class, get your kicks another way you buffoons.
I don't agree about Fey and Poehler being less agressive towards the people they mock/make jokes of. The difference between them and Gervais is that they're hilarious at the Golden Globes and he's not. To be fair to Gervais, he works just fine in TV and I can't think of a single person being funny as host of these type of ceremonies in recent years.
