"Bombshell" and "Rocketman" are the stars of the Makeup and Hairstyling Honors this year.

by Nathaniel R

The acronym MUAHS always amused us since it sounds like a goofy platonic kiss --“Mwahh!” Perhaps that’s appropriate since Make Up involves many pairs of lips. The Makeup and Hairstylists Guild, an organization about 2100 members wide, have announced their nominees for 2019 in movies and television and theatre. The gala where the winners will be announced is on Saturday, January 11, 2020. “Bombshell” and “Rocketman” lead the movie portion of the awards...

MOTION PICTURE CATEGORIES

CONTEMPORARY MAKE-UP

Avengers: End Game  John Blake, Francisco Perez

Bombshell Vivian Baker, Cristina Waltz, Richard Redlefsen

Hustlers  Margot Boccia, Roxanne Rizzo

John Wick: Parabellum   Stephen M. Kelley, Anna Stachow

Us Scott Wheeler, Tym Shutchai Buacharern, Sabrina Castro

Great choices at first glance! These are almost the same nominations in “contemporary hairstyling a little further down so maybe they didn’t screen very many films. Two notable films that didn’t make the cut are A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood and Marriage Story.

PERIOD AND/OR CHARACTER MAKE-UP

Downton Abbey Anne Nosh Oldham, Elaine Browne, Sam Smart

Dolemite is My Name  Vera Steimberg, Debra Denson, Deborah Huss-Humphries

Joker Nicki Ledermann, Tania Ribalow, Sunday Englis

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood  Heba Thorisdottir, Gregory Funk

Rocketman Lizzie Yianni Georgiou, Tapio Salmi, Laura Solari

More strong choices. Some high profile period films that were shut out entirely (no hairstyling or other nods either include Harriet, Judy, The Lighthouse, and JoJo Rabbit.

SPECIAL MAKE-UP EFFECTS

Bombshell Kazu Hiro, Vivian Baker, Richard Redlefsen

Captain Marvel Brian Sipe, Alexei Dmitriew, Sabrina Wilson

It Chapter Two  Sean Sansom, Shane Zander, Iantha Goldberg

Rocketman Barrie Gower, Lizzie Yianni Georgiou, Victoria Money

The Irishman  Mike Marino, Mike Fontaine, Carla White

We assume The Irishman’s honor here is the old age makeup rather than the CGI facework which would be a weird thing to honor. But where is MidSommar? I don’t even like the latter but come on now.

CONTEMPORARY HAIR STYLING

Bombshell Anne Morgan, Jaime Leigh McIntosh, Adruitha Lee

Hustlers Angel De Angelis, Dierdre Harris

John Wick: Parabellum  Kerrie Smith, Therese Ducey

Joker  Kay Georgiou, Vanessa Anderson

The Laundromat Marie Larkin, Yvette Stone, J. Roy Helland

That Roy Helland. He’s always being honored for Streep’s coiff! Obviously Bombshell and Hustlers are competitive her for the win.

PERIOD AND/OR CHARACTER HAIR STYLING

Downton Abbey Anne Nosh Oldham, Elaine Browne, Marc Pilcher

Dolemite is My Name  Carla Joi Farmer, Stacey Morris, Linda Villalobos

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil  Audrey Futterman-Stern

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood  Janine Rath-Thompson, Michelle Diamantides

Rocketman  Lizzie Yianni Georgiou, Tapio Salmi, Laura Solari

No honors for Timothee Chalamet’s bowl-cut in The King? We did. Naturally the period / character honors are super competitive each year (it’s basically everything that’s not “contemporary”

We don’t really understand this prize because there’s no indication as to where these productions are. Are they national tours, Los Angeles only theater event/situations? They definitely aren’t Broadway show nominations since none of these shows are currently on Broadway.

The snub for the team from Judy who transformed Renée Zellweger into Garland is surprising

Nathaniel, how was Bombshell? I know you're embargoed but can you share your thoughts? How are the three blonde divas?

November 12, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMichael R

Michael -- it's really involving! the actresses are great --Nicole is the catalyst for the plot but it's really the Charlize & Margot show since Nicole is offscreen for most of it. I know people think Charzlie might win but I think Margot might instead if the movie is a hit.

November 12, 2019 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

One reason I think Charlize might win is probably her movie being better and grabbing other noms,I don't know if she is liked or beloved and that helps sometimes with a second win.

November 12, 2019 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

So obviously Charlize and John have the most transformations but is Nicole wearing a prosthetic chin? That is Gretchen large ass chin lol

November 12, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPatrick

It's November 12th. Why are awards bodies doing this already? There are still 1.5 months left with unseen films.

November 12, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterArlo

Patrick -- Nicole is definitely wearing a prosthetic chin, yes.

Arlo -- everyone moved their dates up with the Oscars so damn early this year.

November 12, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

If worthy I wonder if they’ll nominate Star Wars and 1917 or Cats next year.

November 12, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJw

So creepy that Charlize photo.

November 12, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMe

I agree with Me. We should ban this f*cking photo, it’s triggering as hell.

November 13, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterElizabeth Banks

I tink Judy was snubbed cos the Hair n Makeup team is not members o MUAHS guild??

But metink they will still get in at the Oscars cos all will vote on the nominees?? 😁
