What will be the biggest disappointment (should a name be omitted) when Oscar nominations come around next month? I think I know Murtada's, but I think I know everything.

Who do you think is most likely to get a surprise coattail acting nomination, a la Marina de Tavira, Tom Hardy, etc.?

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterGeorge

Can Kidman get her fifth nomination?

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJJ

Parasite has already been cited as the Best Picture by a number of collectives of film critics, a position Roma held last year. Is AMPAS finally ready to have a non English speaking film nab the Best Picture Oscar?

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJames

Aaron Taylor's Johnson, Michael Fassbender or Willem Dafoe?

Even if it’s certain not to win, what would a nomination for Annette Bening this year mean for momentum for an eventual trophy for her?

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJohn T

My question isn't specifically about the awards season but it's still relevant:
With Parasite being a huge hit this year, and Burning & Shoplifters last year, Asian cinema is (FINALLY) having a very public moment. For those looking to dive into great Asian films, can both of you give maybe Top 3 or Top 5 favorite Asian films maybe since the year 2000? Asian cinema is a huge genre and it's sometimes hard to know where to start, and we certainly can't use Oscar nominees very much because the Oscars usually ignore Asian films altogether.

Who do you think will be the most shocking snub in the acting categories? Most shocking inclusion?

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

Any chance of Joker being left out? Or just wishful thinking on my part?

Can you guys give a verbal scolding to all the impostors and shenanigans going on lately in the comments section. I think if people hear it out loud maybe they’ll grow up

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterBrevity

Brevity it's seemed to cool down the last few days after the upcoming rebranding/truce that Suzanne, Peggy Sue and /3rtful have agreed upon so it's probably best not to kick a hopefully dead horse.

I'm not american and not at all familiar with Little Women - all I know is the big spoiler that Friends gave all a certain death.
Should I watch the Winona version prior to the Saoirse version?

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterVictor S

Which of the acting categories is most firmed up? Most likely to have a "WTF?!" nominee?

I'd love to hear you guys discuss Queen of Hearts too!

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterEvan

What Oscar record would you most like to see broken this year (or in the near future)?

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJoel M

Throwing in either Brie Larson in Room, Emma Stone in La La Land, Frances McDormand in Three Billboards, or Olivia Colman in The Favourite to this year's race, do we think Zellweger remains the frontrunner?

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMickey

Who has the oscar in hands already?
I’m thinking Roger Deakins and Ruth E. Carter will get their seconds.

Also, after that LAFCA win I think Lopez will win all television awards

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterLSS

Why do I have a sinking feeling that Jennifer Lopez will be nominated for every pre cursor award then miss out at the Oscars! I hope I’m wrong. Do you guy agree?

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

I recently heard that American Beauty has not aged well and is probably the one best picture winner over the last 20 years to plummet the furthest from its status at the time of its win. What are your thoughts and why?

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterHowards End

Is one of the most competitive Best Actor races in years really going to end with one of the five slots going to Christian Bale? That would be so... expected.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterAdam

Do you really want Zellweger to win again? I mean, she is getting nominated only for the iconic role anyway. She did not even get LIZA's blessing and I do not want to disrespect Liza.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterFadhil

Portrait of a Lady on Fire is not eligible for Film in a Foreign Language this year, but can it break out into other categories? Cinematography? Or maybe Director since they seem to be the most adventurous?

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterTom G.

What the hell is going on in Best Actor? I need a deep analysis. Is it possible we have 9 viable contenders? I’ve been following the Oscars for ten years and I don’t remember an acting race this crowded.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterLucky

and Erivo is sneaking into the five only for the iconic character role. Let's ask about broader 'role bolstering' chances.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

Why is Hanks not a lead? Compare to, strangely enough, Daniel Day-Lewis in Gangs of New York. Why is Hanks not a lead?

I think more a lead than Dafoe.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMe

I want to see Little Women so bad! Loved Lady Bird, and I think there's something Gerwig's sensibility can bring to that novel.

However, it seems they don't really like to reward adaptations of 19th Century novels. Unless I'm missing one, I think the last such adaptation to get a best pic nod was Sense and Sensibility in 1995, and last best director nod was for Kubrick and Barry Lyndon in the mid 1970s. So do you think Gerwig and the film have a shot?

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMarsha Mason

@Marsha Mason

The last Best Picture nominee based on a novel from the 1800s was Les Misérables on 2012.
