'Parasite' Sweeps Dorian Awards with Five Wins

by Murtada Elfadl

Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite dominated the winners list at the Dorian awards. The season’s front runner managed five wins, including Film of the Year, Director and Screenplay. Renée Zellweger took Performance of the Year—Actress for Judy, with Antonio Banderas the top choice in the Actor race in Pain and Glory. Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers) and Song Kang-ho (Parasite) won the Supporting awards. The Dorian Awards are handed out by GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, comprised of 260 mainly U.S. journalists covering film and television. Among the group’s unique and LGBTQ focused categories, Portrait of a Lady on Fire was named LGBTQ Film of the Year, while Cats was, of course, the choice for Campy Flick of the Year...

On the TV side Pose again won TV Drama of the Year and LGBTQ TV Drama, while its star Billy Porter took best actor. The show won all 3 awards last year as well. Fleabag won Comedy of the Year while its star Phoebe Waller Bridge triumphed as best Actress over stiff competition including Michelle Williams in Fosse/Verdon.

Lady Gaga won 2 awards; the special Wilde Artist of the Decade while her duet with Bradley Cooper on “Shallow” at last year’s Oscars was named the TV Musical Performance of the Year. Isn't this the group that nominated Michelle Pfeiffer for Mother?

They didn't exactly dig deep for interesting nominations this year, I guess. Has anyone?

January 9, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterJF

JF -- yeah, there's not as much variance from other groups this year but there is still a lot more than other voting bodies. for instance the best picture list is quite different than other groups and the best actress list has both awkwafina AND woodard,

can these acting nominees be the ones for the oscars please

Booksmart is an "unsung" movie?

January 9, 2020 | Unregistered Commenterken s.

These acting categories would be GREAT Oscar nominations!

I'd like to tell everybody to see MURDER MYSTERY, Bong's truly authentic masterpiece.

Oh, well.

Now that evryone seem enthused with K-film, see THE YELLOW SEA, POETRY and MOTHER, too.

I think Phillips deserve that last spot. But if not him then Almodóvar and Greta, in that order. Waititi it's a NO for me.

January 9, 2020 | Unregistered Commenterchofer

I guess there was just no choice but Judy.

January 9, 2020 | Unregistered Commenterwhunk

I meant MEMORIES OF MURDER. Damnit, KNIVES OUT.

shout out to Scream, Queen! Great film. If you get a chance to watch it, take it!

January 9, 2020 | Unregistered CommentercineJAB

@ken s, Booksmart did underperform at the box office so maybe that's what they mean by undersung?

This Best Actress lineup is the best case scenario for the Oscars. I mean, you may not fancy Renée, but getting Oscar nods for Alfre, Awkwafina, and Lupita would be amazing. Fingers crossed.

"Who thanks their agents first? Me!" - going through my head all week

January 9, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterMareko

Disappointed that the queer critics group couldn't find any way to honor Schitt's Creek, favoring the wildly overrated Fleabag.

Schitts Creek is not only well done and hilarious, but it has opened conversations with my straight friends and family in ways that no other pop culture product ever has. Ever.

Mareko:

It's just that my idea of an undersung film are things like Sorry Angel or End of the Century or Sauvage/Wild, whose combined total box office probably doesn't add up to Booksmart's first week. I just think choosing Booksmart is kind of lazy.

January 9, 2020 | Unregistered Commenterken s.

I would KILL for this to be the eventual Oscar list:

Film Performance of the Year — Supporting Actress

*Jennifer Lopez, Hustlers

Laura Dern, Marriage Story

Florence Pugh, Little Women

Margot Robbie, Bombshell

Zhao Shuzhen, The Farewell

January 9, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

Hooray for Catherine O'Hara!
