Most of the new platform releases failed to chart including the Romanian Oscar submission Whistlers ($20k) the racism drama Burden ($20k), Greed ($24k) a comedy starring Steve Coogan, and the abortion/nanny drama Saint Frances ($16k) which was a big hit at SXSW a full year ago.
My Hero Academia had a huge opening for an anime film and Impractical Jokers went strong into wide release. Both oill be frontloaded given their target audiences but still. Impressive.
In happier news Portrait of a Lady on Fire and Emma are expanding really well and next weekend Parasite will sure pass Hero (2002/2004) to become the 3rd highest grossing foreign language film in the past 35 years or so.

I saw Portrait of a Lady on Fire and I am still in shock.
I saw The Invisible Man and was disappointed in it. Parts were fine but the ending subverted everything that came before and left a sour taste in my mouth.
I saw Election
Patti Cake$ - :-)
Just your daily (sporadic) reminder that Renée Zellweger is a two-time Academy Award winning Actress.
The good - THE INVISIBLE MAN, THE CURRENT WAR (can't understand the angst about the latter, although it certainly isn't good enough to be an awards contender, so maybe the delay was due to a re-adjustment of purpose)
Old - the classic silent THE ITALIAN STRAW HAT
The bad 0- Australian indie UNDERTOW. Tries too hard but not original enough.
I had no idea what “My Boyfriend’s Meds” was, so I watched the trailer... and, well, that’s two minutes of my life I can’t get back. Looks absolutely horrible (and I say that as a fan of “Rogelio” in “Jane the Virgin”).
I saw Birds of Prey, and I loved it so much more than I had any expectation to! So much fun, so stylish, such a great ensemble act, and Margot Robbie's performance was a fantastic star turn.
It was the most fun I've had watching a superhero film since.... maybe ever?
A Hidden Life - another Terrence Malick’s masterpiece. An excellent contribution to understand planet Earth in 2020.
Sorry We Missed You - Ken Loach keeps reading economy and society superbly.
American Factory - great documentary about planet Earth to be.
Three great films. Planet Earth’s socioeconomy is going down the drains?
I saw John Schlesinger's "Sunday Bloody Sunday' (1971) on Blu-ray from Criterion. A very adult picture about a romantic triangle between a gay doctor (Peter Finch) a straight woman (Glenda Jackson) and Murray Head as the bi-sexual artist they both love. A very smart script by Penelope Gilliat. The film is both of it's time and timeless. And one can see the impact the famous kiss between between Finch and Head had on the portrayal of gay men on screen. The movie makes gay love a very natural thing. A must see. Nathaniel if you haven't written about this movie you should - highly recommended
Just rewatched some of my favorite films from last year as seen in screenings in foreign cities.
Beanpole is a raw, guttural scream in a wintry landscape. Two doomed women struggling against the tide of a changed world. Harrowing, haunting and beautiful work from Viktoria Miroshnichenko (who gave one of the top 5 best female performances of 2019) and Vasilisa Perelygina.
The Whistlers a.k.a. La Gomera deserved to be seen by many cinephiles for its tantalisingly deadpan and thoughtful realisation of a quasi-noir story of a boy-meets-girl set against the secret world of hired killers, femme fatale, the lost art of whistling as a sonic near-operatic version of communicating, and ever-shifting landscapes. It holds up really well after 3 rewatches.
Re-watches of Stalker and Dodgeball.
I too saw The Whistler, but was not as impressed.
1927's Sunsrise made the biggest impression on me this weekend. Was less enthralled with Hello, Dolly and Sullivan's Travels.
