Welcome to the Academy

by Nathaniel R

The Academy has once again revealed the names of the people they've invited to join their ranks and vote on the Oscars. As we've seen in recent years they've invited over 800 people to join (819 to be exact) with an empbasis on growing their ranks with people of color and women. The initial goal in 2016 was to double the number of women and people of color within their ranks by 2020. They've done that and more (in fact the number of members of color has tripled since 2016.)

The most interesting stat this year (because it was less expected) is that 49% of all new invitees this year come from outside the US. That's kind of shocking for such an American institution. It's amusing to note that last season's Best Picture winner Parasite accounts for 14 of those new non-US members...

Finally, we're not sure what the reasoning is behind one change they've made is but apparently they'll now allow agents to vote (they were previously considered associate members... who do not have voting privileges). Wouldn't agents will just vote for their clients across the board since they directly benefit financially from success markers (like awards) in those clients careers?

Here is the list of the invitees this year. As per usual, those who were invited in more than one category below (marked with asterisks) will have to decide which branch they want to join (because you can only join one group initially. Later on, if invited again, you can join additional groups.). That means that Cynthia Erivo will have to decide if she wants to be considered an actress or a songwriter. And Lulu Wang will have to decide if she wants to be able to nominate writers or directors when she votes on her first Oscar ballot, since she can only join one branch this year.

A lot of fun invites this year. Both Booksmart leads?! Yes, please. The inimitable enduring weirdo Udo Kier? The jaw is dropped but we're so proud. The filmmakers behind three of the best international films in years that Oscar DIDN'T nominate : Levan Akin (And Then We Danced), Ali Abassi (Border), Mati Diop (Atlantics)? We're so glad you're making amends, Academy! The cast of Parasite? Gotta have them.  Niecy Nash AND Tyne Daly? Why the hell not?

Inviting agents to vote is a bad and head-scratching move for the reason you mentioned; what's next, inviting the parents of these new Academy members?

July 1, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterMDA

Why have they taken so long to invite Terence Davies, and why now?

July 1, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterTravis C

TYNE. DALY.

July 1, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterAndrew Carden

Is this a lifetime membership? Does it ever expire?

July 1, 2020 | Unregistered Commenteradri

Adri -- the memberships are lifetimes yes, though at times they've threatened to take away memberships due to inactivity in the industry (though in most cases I believe they've caved on those threats)

July 1, 2020 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

I thought Olivia Wilde was a member already. Anyway, bummer they didn't invite her to the directors branch. But yay for Parasite cast, Awkwafina, Udo Kier and Adèle Haenel!

It's so weird/amazing to see the name of a person I personally know on this list this year! (Yes it's Florence Pugh, I have actually been Zach Braff in secret all this time.)

July 1, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterJason

I can't imagine revoking membership over inactivity... Imagine telling someone like 103 year old Olivia de Havilland she is no longer a member because she hasn't been active. lol

That would reek of ageism!

July 1, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

edit: My bad, Olivia is 104(!!) TODAY.

Happy Birthday Dame Olivia!!!

July 1, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

The Academy doesn't deserve Ben Mendelsohn

July 1, 2020 | Unregistered Commentersati

Michael Nyman wasn't already a member?

After The Piano?

I'm stunned.

July 1, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterBJT

A great group of actors!! Imagine an ensemble piece with them!! I’m obsessed with the idea. (I’d personally pair Niecy Nash with Tim McGraw - she’s elevate him, lol).

July 1, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterBushwick

Is Celine Sciamma already a member? If not she is the shocking oversight considering a lot of people associated with Portrait or a Lady on Fire were invited.

July 1, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterTom G

Tom G -- i believe she was on a previous list. around the time of GIRLHOOD or MY LIFE AS A ZUCCHINI

July 1, 2020 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Seconding: TYNE DALY

July 1, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterKelly Garrett

Also remember people that not ALL of these people ACCEPT the invitation to be members. For all we know a handful of these people were previously shortlisted, but for one reason or another turned the Academy down. I'm sure *someone* is tracking all of this, but it'd be a project for sure.

July 1, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

Ryan T -- the Academy has stated that almost everyone accepts. That might just be them (good publciity) but perhaps it's true and not a lot of people turn it down?

July 1, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Happy to see publicists like Charlie Olsky, Julia Pacetti, and Adam J. Segal on this list!

July 1, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterAbe

@BJT: Michael Nyman does seem like a belated choice, but this year's "I Can't Believe That Person Wasn't Already an Academy Member" award has to go to Bernie Taupin.

July 1, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterBrevity

There’s so many exciting people on this list but Natasha Lyonne put me over the moon
