27th annual Critics Choice TV nominations

The Critics Choice Association used to be two separate associations, one honoring film and one honoring TV and they merged once they decided to have their show together.  Nevertheless the voting is separate and the TV wing of the association announces their nominations first. (Those of us on the film side, don't start voting until tomorrow.) The new third season of Succession led the nominations with 8 while Mare of Easttown and Evil are in second place with five each.

I'm rooting for everyone from Succession, but particularly Matthew Macfadyen and Jeremy Strong. Also think Bo Burnham's Inside is something special. Oh, and Murray Bartlett for White Lotus & Billy Crudup for The Morning Show! There is an absurd abundance of riches in the acting categories.

I really liked Midnight Mass and agree that Hamish Linklater was best in show. Annabeth Gish would've been a worthy nominee too.

Surprised by the relative lack of love for White Lotus. I would've considered Murray Bartlett the lead.

So glad to see Yellowjackets here. Does anyone know if Christina Ricci and Juliette Lewis were classified as leads or support?

Critics adore the Kings, and I think their shows hit a certain sensibility that's catnip to overall demographic that Critics are a part of (college-educated, liberal, middle to upper income). I think that explains the Evil nominations and love for the Good Fight.

With that being said, I'd love to see Audra and Christine take hers and hers emmys. They both did strong work this season. Audra, in particular, really stepped up in a big way and delivered with her story line. Overall, though, I think they both just made each other better.

I'm a bit surprised by the muted response to The White Lotus and Loki. Loki seemed to be well reviewed and well made while the White Lotus was a big summer hit. I suspect Mike White will still get plenty of love for writing and directing later this year, but it is a bit concerning.

Overall, the thing I love about the CCA on the TV is that they're far more comfortable than the emmys with switching things up. 17 shows are represented among the Comedy nominees. At the emmys, for the same category, it was only 13, and this was a banner "spread the wealth" year at the emmys.

Evil is the Kings showing their genre versatility, and I'm here for it. The show got even better and more bizarre in Season 2.

After abandoning both The Good Wife and The Good Fight, I'm reluctant to ever sample another Kings show. In both cases, they let interesting premises devolve by having the characters become too politically involved in unrealistic ways. I feel like they just want to make a show directly about politics, but they tried that, and it flopped.

I do feel The White Lotus deserves more, but I'm glad my other two favorites of the year - Succession and Mare - are well-represented.
