We Got the Link

The Guardian Vanessa Redgrave and Miriam Margoyes in conversation. Wow, love them both
Variety this year's nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame... The Go-Gos, the most success female rock band of all time, FINALLY make the list -- the recent documentary surely helped -- but who knows if they'll actually get voted in because the competition is pretty fierce: Tina Turner, Carole King, Dionne Warwick, Iron Maiden, Kate Bush, LL Cool J, etcetera and only 5 will be chosen
• People Halle Berry putting the trolls commenting on her love life in their place. Queen.

Tina Turner, Priyanka Chopra, and bad news for an animated film we were looking forward to after the jump...

• The Wrap This Promising Young Woman/Variety review controversy doesn't seem to go away. Now the National Society of Film Critics have called on Variety to remove their apology note.
Deadline cute interview with Tom Holland (Cherry) who talks about annoying his co-stars, shooting Infinity War, and that Brad Pitt (!) is his favourite movie star
MNPP Riz Ahmed 14 times
Variety Frank Grillo (Kingdom, Captain America: Winter Soldier) has 8 movies coming in 2021
AV Club HBO is premiering a new doc about Tina Turner next month called Tina. It's from the Oscar winning filmmakers behind Undefeated.
Shadow and Act when Girls Trip (2017) made history at the box office
Cartoon Brew Blue Sky animation studio is shutting down and the film Nimona (based on the truly excellent webcomic) will no longer be completed. It's yet another depressing sideeffect of Disney owning the world and buying all their rivals
Guardian interesting but definitely cagey profile of Priyanka Chopra Jonas (White Tiger).

After a couple of years of having almost no one I was interested in, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame finally has a few I can get worked up (positively) about: I voted for Tina Turner, the Go-Go's. Dionne Warwick, the New York Dolls and Fela Kuti. Tina and the Go-Go's might actually make it in!

The Vanessa Redgrave/Miriam Margolyes back and forth interview is fantastic. Fascinating women.

Shame that Vanessa Redgrave and Miriam Margolyes chat wasn't a video, I could listen to both of them talk all day! Two treasures.

Kate Bush will never make it in, but she's by far the best artist on the list.

I just voted for Tina Turner, Carole King, Todd Rundgren, Chaka Khan and The New York Dolls. I could have voted for any of the nominated acts except Iron Maiden and LL Cool J.

Tina Turner is already inducted with Ike and deserved to be the first woman inducted twice before Stevie Nicks as her solo career is way more impressive; she’s Simply the Best.

whunk- - i voted for Kate and I agree.

For me, I'm going with Tina Turner, the New York Dolls, Iron Maiden, Kate Bush, and Carole King. If I'm going for a sixth pick, the Go-Go's as their inclusion would be a nice fuck you to Jann Wenner.

The Foo Fighters and Jay-Z can wait. Fela Kuti should come in next year. LL, fuck him. He's hip-hop's equivalent to Rod Stewart. An aging twat who just sucks up to everyone. All of them steroids, workout at the gym, and playing cute hasn't done him any good.

Where's Big Star? the MC5? Iggy Pop? Lou Reed? Brian Eno? Minor Threat? Kraftwerk? the Jesus & Mary Chain, the Replacements? Husker Du? Can? Sonic Youth? PJ Harvey? Bjork?

The Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame is overrated though I am happy that NIN and Depeche Mode got inducted last year. The latter was also a great fuck you to Jann Wenner since that bullshit magazine has never given them their due despite a positive review for their last album but Dave Gahan responded to that review by saying "they're still cunts".

Why hasn't CHER been on the ballots for the RnR HOF? Like, she should've been in at least since the late 00's/'10!

February 10, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterCALonBway92

@CALonBway92-She should've been in the RnR HOF back in the late 90s. See, it's things like this that makes the whole thing a lot of bullshit.

Carole King is by far the most all around talented individual on the list of HOF nominees. It is ridiculous that she has not been nominated as a performer before this year. A songwriter, singer, producer, performer - great in every aspect. One of the greatest songwriting portfolios ever. She made demos of her (and Goffin's songs) songs that were so good that producers pretty much copied them. An album catalog that is among the best of any individual artist (and the catalog goes way beyond Tapestry - Writer, Music, Rhymes & Reasons, Fantasy, Really Rosie, Wrap Around Joy, Thoroughbred, etc.). It makes me kind of sad to listen to current pop/rock music because no one knows how to write an interesting or memorable melody anymore. People comparing Taylor Swift's Folklore and Evermore to Tapestry have no idea what they are talking about. Piano based pop songs these days are just variations on chopsticks.

Wow, so wonderful to see Kate Bush fans here -- I love her too. I never get the chance to see her perform live because tickets to her shows sell like the proverbial hot cakes. But I'll be running up that hill to hear her sing 50 different words for snow!

And that conversation with Miriam Margolyes and Vanessa Redgrave for The Guardian was a thrilling read from start to finish. I wish it were a video too just to see and hear them say the words they said. Love it when Vanessa says: "Guardian, could you stop calling actresses “actors”?"

Carole King is already in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a songwriter. This nomination is to induct her as a performer.

February 11, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterCash

thevoid99: Luckily Iggy Pop and Lou Reed are already in the HOF (Lou Reed twice!). A couple of years ago both the MC5 and Kraftwerk were up for induction. They were the only nominees I really cared about and I voted for them as often as I could. Care to guess who were #14 and #15 out of 15? My anger at the R&R HOF is aimed more at their snubbing of 60s artists. Where are Chubby Checker, the Shangri-La's, the Turtles, the Monkees, Connie Francis, etc.? If these performers are kind of obscure today, that's part of the point. Isn't part of the reason for such an institution to preserve history before it's completely forgotten?

Also, every year there's at least one nominee I consider absolutely horrendous, and I wish that, in addition to the 5 votes allowed, they'd allow one negative vote. In the past it would have been Rush or KISS. This year it's Iron Maiden. Blecchh

February 11, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterAmy Camus

The fan vote really doesn't mean anything for the HoF, sadly.

Pure sexism is the only reason why the Go-Go's have not been up the the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame previously. These ladies have always ROCKED.
