BAFTA Long Lists

Each year the BAFTA longlists remind us that awards voters have extremely narrow vieweing habits and blind spots that are practically extend to their peripheral vision. We're SOOO glad Oscar doesn't do this winnowing in their major categories since otherwise we'd have to give us so many dreams that our favourites justmissed each year, rather than not being considered at all for their brilliance.

BAFTA voters have yet to decide on the nominations. Those are not announced until March 9th but this is the list each category will draw from so hundreds of options are now ineligible. The long lists are stunningly messy. They're after the jump if you dare...

Mark Rylance The Trial of the Chicago 7
Paul Raci Sound of Metal
David Strathairn Nomadland
Stanley Tucci Supernova

Each year I try to make peace with rampant category fraud but I always fail. Daniel Kaluuya plays Fred Hampton in the Fred Hampton biopic but somehow he's supporting (I've seen the picture and its clearly a two-lead film and the entire story is about him of course... it's like calling Leonardo DiCaprio supporting in The Great Gatsby. Yes, the story is from someone else's perspective but it's literally ALL ABOUT HIM) and Stanley Tucci is in all but one scene of Supernova and somehow he's supporting. Please note that they stiffed Colman Domingo and Glynn Turman of MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM which is ridiculous given who they did include. Fame obviously means a lot to them. As do leading roles in the supporting category.

I thought they had stopped these? I don't remember seeing them for years.

Nat : SAG noms just came out. Lindo and Seyfried snubbed! Leto nominated AGAIN.

Raci snubbed again 😥😥

I too wish we never saw these, as they're frequently baffling. Having said that, I'm delighted to see the nominations for Rocks and Calm With Horses, two of last year's best films which didn't seem to see much traction outside of the UK.

I always wonder if release dates harm BAFTA entries at all. Clearly not if we're talking about pictures that are already 'in the hunt,' so to speak, for an Oscar because they've been dutifully trying to predict the US for years now. But a surprising number of films haven't been released here yet, including Nomadland, Ammonite, Promising Young Woman, Sound of Metal, Minari, French Exit, Another Round...Although clearly some of these still did well, so I don't know!

Amy Adams is nominated for SAG!!!!!!!♥️👍🙏

February 4, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterGeri

I hope the complete omissions of First Cow and Never Rarely Sometimes Always is because they weren't eligible.

February 4, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterAmy Camus

That SAG list reeks of self-congratulatory virtue signaling, which doesn't surprise considering how rampant that is in Hollywood as a whole.

The fact they also tweeted the "historic" nature of the nominations themselves also stinks, BUT, none of that stinks as much as Raci missing out,

AND,

Both Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal missing out for Normal People. which also missed out.

Absolute abomination, the sequel.

P.S. You gotta love that Female Actor in a Drama Series literally just has two shows in contention.

February 4, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterManny

@Amy Camus - First Cow doesn't appear to have been picked up for distribution in the UK, and I don't think that Never Rarely Sometimes Always was eligible (only recently been picked up, and will be released on May 27th).

Cosmo Jarvis 😍

I just read “Costume Design - Hillbilly Elegy” and now I can’t stop laughing. So random...

February 4, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterAntônio

Everyone: NRSA was eligible - it is on the Screenplay shortlist.

Hillbilly chic

The true horror here is that True History of the Kelly Kang only made it to the "long" list for Makeup & Hair.

That film isn't anywhere NEAR perfect, but it has more vibrancy and agency and personality than more than half of these lists, combined or otherwise.

February 4, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterManny

Michael R - You're right, of course. Very sad that Sidney Hanigan didn't make the list - or do I mean ridiculous?

February 4, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterAmy Camus

Considering the HILLBILLY ELEGY love here, Glenn should be good for that third career Oscar nom. :)

February 4, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterAndrew Carden

I’d like to see Kate Winslet nominated. At first I didn’t think I cared for Ammonite but I couldn’t stop thinking about it for days after. I think Winslet and the score should definitely get some recognition.

February 4, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterBrad

I think it's fascinating to see these long lists. It shows how competitive Best Actress is this year if Elisabeth Moss or Anya Taylor-Joy or Sidney Flanigan couldn't make it this far.

I'm most disappointed by the absence of His House in several key categories, especially Sope Dirisu in Actor.

And I think it's a bit unfair to dismiss the Best Picture list by saying all the Netflix titles got in, including the 'mediocre' ones. Is that an attack on The Dig, which is a flawed but fine film and certainly better than a lot of the Netflix films that didn't make the list (Rebecca, The Midnight Sky, Malcolm & Marie, Hillbilly Elegy, The Prom...).

February 4, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterSteve G

I got excited when I saw Alfre Woodard's name for Clemency that maybe Aldis Hodge could get nominated but then he's not there...

I used to like when we would get the Emmy finalist lists but it did indeed make it so much more irritating when John Krasinski, Becki Newton, Mary McDonnell, and others clearly just missed.

February 4, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterAbe

I'll sell my right leg for Alfre Woodard in Clemency to get a nomination.

(In advance, this is the real me and if a fake has the lack of taste to try and get my opinion removed for their enjoyment then screw them. Let me ignore and move on with autonomy).

February 4, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterLSS

I am in the minority that think that Raci was great but don't think that he SHOULD be nominated for anything... so I am OK with the snubs.

Sacha Baron Cohen, on the other hand... I hope he SWEEPS the big ones. He has been richly deserving recognition for so long...

February 5, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJesus Alonso

On Bakalova... one has to wonder, BAFTA looks like a sure thing - she may win it, thanks to Baron Cohen's campaigning - and she is the clear frontrunner to win the Globe and has a really good shot at winning SAG as well...

... is Oscar going to snub her? And if by any means she arrives nominated and has a Globe win (Leading), a SAG win and a BAFTA win... can they deny her and give it to whoever wins Supporting Actress at the race? I think if Youn is snubbed at Oscar - which i don't think, I think both Bakalova and Youn are likely to be nominees - Bakalova will also take Oscar, regardless of who's nominated. Think of Marisa Tomei, she won for a comedic performance that was great but doesn't even kiss the ass of Bakalova's challenge and achievement...

February 5, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJesus Alonso

I know Bo Bunham is unlikely to actually make any final nominations, but let me live the fantasy that the love for Promising Young Woman is so strong we get a surprise like him in supporting actor or Allison Brie/Jennifer Coolidge in supporting actress. Awards season is going all in on a brutal revenge/horror film and I'm just here for the ride.
