Razzie Nominations: Music, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Hillbilly Elegy, etcetera
by Nathaniel R
We don't want to waste too much time on this but figured we share the nominees for the 41st annual Razzies. The Razzies dont often have much in common with the general awards season and usually go for easy marks rather than thinking about what actually constitutes bad acting or bad filmmaking. But this year there's a little more crossover since the savagely reviewed Sia musical Music as well as two Oscar contenders in various categories, the overwrought Hillbilly Elegy and the critical and zeitgeist hit Borat Subsequent Moviefilm are both up for prizes...
Worst Picture
- 365 Days
- Absolute Proof
- Dolittle
- Fantasy Island
- Music
Had to look up the first two: 365 Days is a romantic mafioso drama import from Poland that's streaming on Netflix and Absolute Proof is a right-wing propaganda documentary about the 2020 election.
Worst Actor
- Robert Downey, Jr. - Dolittle
- Mike Lindell (The “My Pillow” Guy) - Absolute Proof
- Michele Morrone - 365 Days
- Adam Sandler - Hubie Halloween
- David Spade - The Wrong Missy
Worst Actress
- Anne Hathaway - The Last Thing He Wanted AND Roald Dahl's The Witches
- Katie Holmes - Brahms: The Boy II AND The Secret: Dare to Dream
- Kate Hudson – Music
- Lauren Lapkus - The Wrong Missy
- Anna-Maria Sieklucka - 365 Days
Worst Supporting Actress
- Glenn Close - Hillbilly Elegy
- Lucy Hale - Fantasy Island
- Maggie Q - Fantasy Island
- Kristen Wiig - Wonder Woman 1984
- Maddie Ziegler - Music
This is a very dumb category since both Glenn Close and Kristen Wiig are quite good in their movies even if the movies themselves aren't worthy of them. We think Close will land an Oscar nod on Monday... as confusing as that category is. If she does it will be the third time in history that a Razzie nominee for acting was also an Oscar nominee for acting. It happened twice in the 1980s: James Coco for Only When I Laugh (1980) and Amy Irving for Yentl (1983). We'd agree that Coco was pretty bad doing a gayface in the former but Irving's nomination was ridiculous, just the typical homophobia/misogyny of the Razzies since she was starring in a Barbra Streisand musical and musicals are often perceived as a gay and feminine genre and that one literally is gay and feminine. Or, well, at least queer if not quite gay.
But IF the Razzies were actually good at their job there'd be more crossover because sometimes the Oscars really go for expired ham but they usually leave those performances alone.
Worst Supporting Actor
- Chevy Chase - The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee
- Rudy Giuliani (As "Himself") - Borat, Subsequent Movie-Film
- Shia LeBeouf - The Tax Collector
- Arnold Schwarzeneggar - Iron Mask
- Bruce Willis - Breach, Hard Kill AND Survive the Night
The fact that Jared Leto isn't here for The Little Things is a missed opportunity.
Worst Screen Combo
- Maria Bakalova & Rudy Giuliani (Yes, That Really IS Rudy Giuliani!) - Borat Subsequent Movie-Film
- Robert Downey Jr. & His Utterly Unconvincing "Welsh" Accent – Dolittle
- Harrison Ford & That Totally Fake-Looking CGI “Dog” – Call of the Wild
- Lauren Lapkus & David Spade - The Wrong Missy
- Adam Sandler & His Grating Simpleton Voice - Hubie Halloween
This is mean to Maria Bakalova who is sensational in Borat just to take yet another dig at Giuliani. A dumb move since they already "awarded" him in Supporting Actor.
Worst Director
- Charles Band - All 3 Barbie & Kendra movies
- Barbara Bialowas & Tomasz Mandes - 365 Days
- Stephen Gaghan – Dolittle
- Ron Howard - Hillbilly Elegy
- Sia – Music
Worst Screenplay
- 365 Days
- All 3 Barbie & Kendra Movies
- Dolittle
- Fantasy Island
- Hillbilly Elegy
Worst Remake, Rip-off or Sequel
- 365 Days (Polish Remake/Rip-Off of Fifty Shades of Grey)
- Dolittle (Remake)
- Fantasy Island (Remake/”Re-Imagining”)
- Hubie Halloween (Remake/Rip-Off of Ernest Scared Stupid)
- Wonder Woman 1984 (Sequel)

Really disappointed in the Glenn Close nomination, not going to lie. Purely political reactions to a perfectly well-acted part. It's embarrassing and so transparent that the nominations for conservative content is through Leftist resentment as the hatred for Giuliani and the Mike Lindell documentary Absolute Proof have shown. Sorry but after Time magazine ran an article basically admitting to rigging...Oh, I'm sorry, 'fortifying' the 2020 election, I wouldn't trust any of these psychopaths ever again. And according to that article, there are alot of people involved.

In any case, I'm not even American and it is so sad to see the fun taken out of movies over the last five years due to the media's psychotic hatred of your former president. When are you going to realize that you have been lied to? I really want to stress, my intention isn't to 'troll' anyone here; I have loved this blog for over ten years now, and I still do in so many ways; the literary talent here, for one, is remarkable. But something truly ugly and terrifying has taken over our general Zeitgeist where we are more divided than ever. Does anyone else think this too?
Once again. from the bottom of my heart, I am not trolling.
You're misreading that Time article. And yeah, you're trolling.
@ Working Stiff I absolutely did not misread the article and I am not trolling. Try not to be so bitchily dismissive in the future.
How’s this? Fuck off.
Meh Nathaniel. No woe is me Pfeiffer pity until the eminently more underrated and under-utilised 3 time nominee from way back when, Sigourney Weaver, wins or is in the conversation again.
I don’t understand or even really see any Streep versus Close conversation happening as of late. In two months time they will both have a Oscar winner on their resume so whatever.
Secons leon
Nah, Close won't win that Oscar and much less after losing the SAG (If she gets the Oscar nom of course)
LOL that Marsha Mason above is not the REAL fake Marsha Mason on this site, but I concur with my imposter.
You don’t seem to like Razzies but they are important to show not to think things in awards seasons too seriously and call out some laziest actors and directors primary. If you want more thought out worst lists you can do that yourself.
Death to fake actress commenters. The Marsha Mason-ception is mind melting. Although the first Marsha's comment tracked with the history most.
After further thought me winning the lottery is more likely than a Close loss this year. I give in and will just enjoy it. Overdue awards reign supreme, Three Artful style.
Right fake Leon. Even when I predict a Close snub as surprise.
Enjoy the delusion - Overdue awards reign supreme,
Yeah cause it worked so great the last time
Hmm why you faking a fake for attention? Chill out, overdue Oscars for not so great work have happened before broseph. Close will probably give a great speech. Lord knows she's written it out enough times.
I don't understand the Streep snark. She's not even in the conversation this year, so please, let it go.
The Razzies ceased to be relevant with the rise of social media and Bullock owning them on stage. They are very afraid of getting attacked by a big star (or even worse: the fans) in a bad turn in a bad tank, so they mostly avoid nominating big films or the big stars in them. Their cowardice is worse than their misogyny, homophobia and racism (their hatred for Tyler Perry, who for all the issues in his films is actually pretty harmless, is very telling): they don't even have a purpose anymore.
I'd say that the nominations for 365 Days do feel refreshening: it's been a while since they came to appreciate truly bad cinema, as in a midnight-movie way. But the Close and particularly the Bakalova nods are low jabs at bringing some attention to an *award* that has been on life support for over ten years.
