3 days til Oscar nominations.
Final Oscar nomination predictions coming up very soon but while we finish them, today's silly discussion prompt: rank the Best Picture nominees with "Three" in the title.
THREE SMART GIRLS (1936) -3 noms.
A LETTER TO THREE WIVES (1949) - 3 noms & 2 wins: Director, Screenplay
THREE COINS IN THE FOUNTAIN (1954) 3 noms & 2 wins: Cinematography, Song
THE GODFATHER PART III (1990) - 7 noms. No wins
TOY STORY 3 (2010) - 5 noms & 2 wins: Animated Feature and Song
THREE BILLBOARDS... (2017) - 7 noms & 2 wins: Actress, Supporting Actor
And for extra credit...
You may hand out 3 Oscar statues to any achievement from any of the following films with three in the title that were not nominated for the Best Picture Oscar (or sometimes any Oscars at all). But only 3. What's it gonna be?
Three on a Match (1932)

The Three Faces of Eve (1957) - 1 win Actress

Count me among the minority that LOVES The Godfather, Part III and has been my favorite of the trilogy till this year the new cut appeared and even improved it.
(Seriously, why people say it is a "bad" film? It's another masterpiece, just taking the franchise in a different direction, only on the surface... it ties pretty much the Michael Corleone story)
Three Colors: Blue - best actress (Binoche), original score and cinematography.
I'm still stunned that 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days didn't get nominated for best foreign film. I thought it would win that year.
1. A Letter to Three Wives
2. Toy Story 3
3. Three Billboards
4. Three Coins in the Fountain (this has my favorite Dorothy McGuire performance)
Haven't seen 3 Smart Girls or The Godfather Part III.
I don’t know about a win, but I would have absolutely given Ben Foster a supporting actor nomination for 3:10 to Yuma.
I've seen all of these except A Letter to Three Wives. My rankings are:
1. The Godfather Part III (It's not quite as good as the other two in the trilogy but it's great and I've been a fan of it ever since it came out)
2. Three Coins in the Fountain
3. 3 Smart Girls
4. Toy Story 3
5. Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri (but I do like it to some extent)
As for giving three Oscars to those other films:
Three Kings - Best Film Editing
Three Colours: Red - Best Picture, Best Directing
Toy Story 3 is a masterpiece. Three Smart Girls is dreadful - Deanna Durbin is really hard to take.
1. A Letter to Three Wives-Glad that it won director and screenplay but it should have won Best Picture and Linda Darnell was robbed of a Best Actress nomination.
It gets tough after that, I don't really think too highly of the other films and see none of them as worthy of a win as the best film of their year.
2. Godfather III-such a comedown from the first two but I guess it's the best of what there is to choose from.
3. Three Billboards
4. Three Smart Girls-A nice little picture with Deanna Durbin very winning but that's all.
5. Three Coins in the Fountain-A puffy, fluffy travelogue with a good cast and zero substance.
I haven't nor will I ever see Toy Story 3 having endured the first and struggling through a bit of the second I have no desire to subject myself to more.
Since Joanne Woodward rightly won for Three Faces of Eve I won't use that in my three handouts. Since it's just for fun I won't concern myself with whose Oscar I might be taking away either.
Three on a Match-Best Actress-Ann Dvorak
Three Days of the Condor-Best Adapted Screenplay
3:10 to Yuma-Best Actor-Russell Crowe
Original Screenplay, S.Actress (Pamela Tiffin), and Art Direction for One, Two, Three (1961)
1. Toy Story 3
2. The Godfather Part III
3. Three Billboards
4. A Letter to Three Wives
And I’d award:
-Best Actress to Shelley Duvall, 3 Women
-Best Actress to Juliette Binoche, Three Colors: Blue
-Best International Film to 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (although IIRC, it wasn’t eligible?)
2 masterpieces:
1.A letter to three wives
2.Toy story 3
2 very good movies (That some people hate)
3.Three billboards
4.The godfather III
2 boring movies:
5.Thre coins
6.Three smart girls
Edwin -- no, it was eligible. It's snub was one of th reasons why they formed the executive commitee
I'm assuming Joanne Woodward still has her Oscar for purposes of this exercise, so...
1. Three Days of the Condor - Best Supporting Actor, Max Von Sydow
2. Three Days of the Condor - Best Actor, Robert Redford
3. 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days - Best Foreign Film
Redford and Von Sydow should have won competitive Oscars (for acting), and I love Condor, so why not?
I would've nominated Three Kings for something at the 1999 Oscars - picture, screenplay, director I still can't believe that the film was entirely blanked during awards season. Ebert gave it 4 stars and I remember EW in their fall movie edition pegged it as a major oscar player.
1. A Letter to Three Wives
2. Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri
3. The Godfather Part III
4. Toy Story 3
5. Three Coins in the Fountain
What's Three Smart Girls? Is it seriously any good?
As for the rest:
3 Women: Best Screenplay (I’d say Best Director, but I want Woody Allen to keep that. He can lose the screenplay award, since the final film basically doesn’t resemble the screenplay very much anyway.)
Three Kings: Best Director
One, Two, Three: Best Supporting Actor, Horst Buchholz
Wait! Scratch Horst Buchholz for supporting actor. Like Jules I want Max Von Sydow to have an Oscar so give him one for THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR, even though it's not one of his truely great performances.
I just come back to vindicate Iron Man 3, one of the bravest MCU film, daring to satirize the war on terror with the Mandarin/Osama Ben Laden. A stroke of genius... I still can't believe, they went there. BRAVO.
1)Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (astounding film and performances)
2)Three Coins In the Fountain (great Rome locations, love Maggie McNamara)
3)Toy Story 3 (the best of the 4 for me)
4)A Letter To Three Wives (didn't really stir me)
5)The Godfather Part III (Eh!)
6)Three Smart Girls (unfairly last, because I never saw it)
Ond, Two, Three is one of the funniest movies for me. Such fast dialog.
1. A Letter to Three Wives
2. Toy Story 3
3. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
4. The Godfather: Part III
(Haven't seen the other two)
3 Women: Supporting Actress (Sissy Spacek)
Three Kings: Screenplay
3:10 To Yuma: Score
4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days:
Best Actress: AnaMaria Marinca
Best Foreign language Film
Best Original Screenplay
"A Letter to Three Wives" was a wow performance wise.
Should have had six acting nominations:
Actress: Linda Darnell, Ann Sothern
Supporting Actor: Kirk Douglas, Paul Douglas
Supporting Actress: Thelma Ritter, Connie Gilchrist
Sadly, neither Linda Darnell, Paul Douglas nor Connie Gilchrist -treasurable talents all -were ever nominated. And shockingly none of the six ever won a competitive Oscar.
I'm not sure of the middle of the pack, but A Letter To Three Wives is surely at the top, and Three Billboards is definitely at the bottom.
And since no one has been brave enough, let's give Raquel Welch a Best Supporting Actress award for The Three Musketeers just to make Hollywood squirm, and give them a Costume one too while we're at it.
If anyone slanders Trois Couleurs.... I'll go Dae-su on you simps.
Well, she did win a Golden Globe for Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) for that performance, so there was probably much squirming at the time.
Three Days of the Condor Screenplay, Actor
4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days-Picture, Actress,Director
Three Kings-editing, sound, cinematography
c
Oscar statuettes to:
Trois Coleurs-Bleu, Blanc, Rouge - picture/international picture, director, score, cinematography, actress (Binoche, Jacob)
4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days - international picture, actress (Marinca), screenplay
3 Women - actress (Duvall), supporting actress (Spacek)
A Letter To Three Wives is fabulous and one of my comfort movies.

Would also recommend Three Times dir. Hou Hsiao-Hsien.
