Cannes Closing Ceremony (Arrivals) *Live Blog*

by Nathaniel R

LIVE CEREMONY

6:26 Most of the people we're seeing on the red carpet are people from the 2020 Cannes that was cancelled. It's a nice tribute to invite all of them. They wave before the 2021 stars begin crowding the carpet...

6:30 Actress Melanie Thierry, President of the Camera d'Or jury says they watched a "wonderful smorgasbord" of films, 31 in total. (whew that is a lot for any non-shorts jury) and it was difficult choice.

6:41 I missed snapshotting Gemma Chan (argh!) but she was breathtaking. So here is Rosamund Pike giving us glam side-boob and sharp movie star profile.

6:43 They're talking to Reinate Reinsve (Norway's Worst Person in the World) while Caleb Landry Jones (Australia's Nitram) is on the split screen. Is this our Best Actress and Best Actor winner? The team of Nitram are all on hand so that film is definitely winning something big. When the red carpet narrator saw Caleb earlier on the red carpet she said "Is this a clue?"

6:50 The Sparks are on the red carpet so perhaps Leos Carax's Annette is winning a prize despite mixed reception (including right here as Cláudio and Elisa disagreed).

6:53 Director Andrea Arnold and her always recognizable bangs and actress Elsa Zylberstein ascend the stairs. They're on the Un Certain Regard jury. Directors Oliver Stone (who speaks French! who knew?) and Asghar Farhadi both arrive nearly simultaneously. The crowd is moving into the theater quickly except for movie star Vincent Lindon who we see signing a lot of autographs and posing for photos with fans on the sidelines.

6:59 SHARON STONE looking like an iconic movie star as is her habit. Between Sharon Stone, Oliver Stone (no relation), The Sparks, Val Kilmer's doc Val, and Spike Lee on the jury, this Cannes edition is giving us late 80s/early 90s flashbacks.

7:06 The films Titane and Ahed's Knee are also here. Prizes for lots of different films tonight... they're spreading the wealth as Cannes juries are encouraged to.

7:15 Memoria, which was one of the last films screened is also in the house with Apichatpong "Joe" Weerathasakul and his star Tilda Swinton.

7:17 The jury is posing for lots of photographs so here's a cute moment of Tahar Rahim and Spike Lee hugging it out. Maybe there were no "feuds" on this particular jury.

7:22 The jury is moving inside so we're obviously starting soon.

7:24 Pierre Niney and Jean Dujardin, the stars of the latest edition of the comedy franchise 0SS 117: From Africa with Love, which is screening tonight and coming out on August 4th in France are posing now as the red carpet festivities die down and the stars move into the theater. Hilariously they're play elevator style music as the red carpet ends, dulling the mood.

ONCE WE FIND A WAY TO WATCH THE CEREMONY ITSELF WE'LL CONTINUE WITH A PART TWO

I'm unsure if this link works in America, but I'm following the ceremony on the Canal+ website: https://www.canalplus.com/live/

If some rumors are true, we might be getting the second Palme d'Or winner directed by a woman in Cannes history. Regardless, I love that they seem willing to spread the wealth, even more than the rules dictate. So excited to see the results!

I love Spike's jacket, not sure it's a good cut, but fantastic design.

Best working link I've found. I think the youtube stream isn't the actual ceremony
