74th Cannes: Red Carpet Opening Night
by Nathaniel R
Who gets your vote as Best Dressed at Cannes today? More photos are after the jump...
Andie MacDowell?
Jessica Chastain?
Helen Mirren?
Marion Cotillard?
Jodie Foster?
Soko?
Maggie Gyllenhaal?
The opening night film was the competition title Annette starring Marion Cotillard and Adam Driver and directed by French madman Leos Carax (of Holy Motors, Pola X, and Lovers on the Bridge fame) so the whole jury was out as well. Spike Lee wore a bright fuschia suit, bless.
As we've stated before this is not the first time the festival has had a majority female jury but it's not common. This is only the third time that we know of. You can read up on the jury here.
And Jodie Foster, pictured here with her wife, was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. The French have always loved her and it probably helps that she's spoken fluent French since way back in the days of Taxi Driver and dubs her own films.

Is Jodie Foster back to the game? Great! She's my Best Dressed of this group.
Spike Lee is the usual Spike Lee as always.
Marion Cotillard sometimes makes big mistakes, this time she got it right.
They are so well dressed, so elegant that it doesn't even look like Cannes.
Marion always takes risks - I admire her for that and this one paid off - she wins.
Mirren is usually the epitome of glamour but what is going on with her hair and eye make up? She looks like she’s just rolled in 5am - knowing Mirren, maybe she had 😂
I believe you left Mélanie Laurent off your lineup of names. Just an FYI. 😉
I don't recall ever seeing Maggie G look like that and it's a great look for her, so I'll vote for her.
Just when I thought I was recovered from seeing Jodie lounging at home in her spectacular Golden Globe jammies, she is dressed to perfection for the red carpet and knocks me for a loop again.
Andie, your dress is wrinkled and possibly stained. You're an also ran. Of the women in white, I think I like Jodie Foster the best as a complete package, though Marion's looks more daring, but kind of unattractive.
Helen Mirren comes in second because of her use of color, but the design (and posing) are sort of meh.
I prefer sleek and simple, the whole less is more aesthetic, so I say Marion and Jodie.
Early reactions to Annette are positive but not ecstatic on the whole. I’ve seen the word “repetitive” used by a few different people, although some of them seem to mean it in a good way, whatever that may entail. Adam Driver is getting really good notices, though. I think if it wins any award at Cannes, it’ll be for him. Or I could see the jury giving some kind of special achievement award to Sparks for the music. But just based on these early reactions, I’m not sure it’s really a major player for the Palme d’Or.
ScottC -- Yes, Maggie Gyllenhaal is the big surprise here, my second place is between her and Marion, with Mélanie Laurent in third.
Marion Cotillard and Solo are both top notch, but they're all great, except for Mirren whose dress, hair, stance, and makeup are all regrettable to say the least.
WOW!!!!! Jessica Chastain... oh baby! Marion Cotillard, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Dame Helen Mirren, and Melanie Laurent... OH YEAH!!!!
Cannes is where fashion rules! The Met Gala is child's play compared to Cannes.
I like Chastain's dress but not the color. They're all inspired this year.
Jodie's wife and Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Frightening and awful: Marion Cotillard looks like a walking mermaid. Best: Jodie Foster, sleek, magnificent, simple hair, but becomes her, back to its natural color too, also her wife Alexandra Hedison (daughter of the late David) looks marvelous.
The best accessory that any person can wear is a smile so my pick is Maggie Gyllenhaal because her smile is precious.
i love marion, but i gotta go with spike here.
Jodie Foster and Spike Lee.
It's honestly just a good feeling seeing beautiful talented actresses on the red carpet again with no masks.
I'll also add it's great to see Jodie holding hands with her wife being herself.
Jodie Foster is so overated.
Jodie got the memo - tonight is about you so look your best. Stunning.
Wow, I love fashion commentary.
Marion Cotillard looks good. As usual, she wears an unusual outfit but pulls it off. I don't know if metallic suits are on trend, but probably no one but her could pull this off as well.
Andie McDowell is 63 and looks it. Jessica Chastain doesn't look good in that dress.
Helen Mirren looks like the heat got to her. That's what's causing the raccoon eyes and the hair looking like it was slicked back but has now dried out.
Maggie Gyllenhaal, who seems to always be searching for a good look, looks good.
And finally, Jodie. Proud of her for appearing with Alex. Industry insiders say Jodie was excoriated for a fashion mistake back in the 1980's and has since relied on sleek and simple looks from Armani (I think). This one is a keeper. She's one of the few women who can wear that slick, wet-look hair. The dress, as desired, is sleek and simple.
"Andie McDowell is 63 and looks it"
Is that intended as an insult? I think she looks great
Sawyer--- yep. and so happy she's finally bringing her wife along. they look stunning together.
Amy -- agreed. most 63 year-olds would love to look like Andie MacDowell! Impressed and surprised that she's letting her hair go grey though. Maybe she's hoping it'll go white like Helen Mirrens (which is always a cool look on men or women i personally think)
rrrich -- "who seems to always be searching for a look"... i think this is maybe kinda of true. And I love the look she found.
Amy Camus - I agree with you. Andie McDowell looks sensational. And I still can't understand why she has never received an Oscar nomination.
Her work in "Sex. Lies, Videotape", "Green Card" and "Four Weddings..." were worthy of a nomination IMO.
I'm glad Andie McDowell is still in the game. The quality of her work varies, but she's top notch in SEX, LIES, AND VIDEOTAPE, THE OBJECT OF BEAUTY, GROUNDHOG DAY, and more recently LOVE AFTER LOVE. I think she kind of needs a good director. And while she certainly doesn't look 30, she looks great. I'd say you could easily cast her as being in her early fifties. If she's had work done, it doesn't show, and I'd certainly rather see people age naturally, like Katherine Hepburn did, than go for facelift after facelift.
So, Jodie got her honorary Golden palm because french people live her? It is demeaning. She is a legend and totally deserves it!
