BAFTA Long Lists reveal potentially dire nomination slates
Every year the BAFTA long lists remind us that we are sooooo glad that Oscar doesn't do this in the major category. We really like our delusional world where voters are actually watching screeners and not just voting for the most high profile things in every category. For one, BAFTA longlists have mostly ignored non-English language films that people were feeling hopeful about in the awards race (Parallel Mothers, Drive My Car, Titane, Worst Person in the World, etc) except for in the international category. Similar the animation longlist is all big studio American stuff (with the exception of Flee). These are all clear "stay in your lane!" signs from voters. For another, they actually think films like House of Gucci is worthy all of the place and that Don't Look Up has worthy elements in all four of the acting races. Argh!
But at any rate here are the BAFTA longlists. Reminder: These are NOT nominations, just what the nominations coming on February 3rd will be drawn from. The following info is pulled directly from the BAFTA site...

I thought they we're embracing more diverse homegrown films and UK talent or was that just last year.
I think Don't Look Up was one of the worst things I saw this year and all the acting bar the Lawrence and DiCaprio and the lovely Melanie Lynskey was really bad,I wanted to take back all their Oscars,Mark Rylance was the worst offender.
What the heck is going on with Penelope Cruz?!? Also, still reeling from those crazy SAG nominations...
No Stewart is the big shocker expect that to change come Oscar time,The younger ladies Haim,Jones and Zegler all snubbed.
Ellis is 2022's Amanda Seyfried
Who is voting for Leto,I'd like to speak to them after watching his HOG as a clip reel and they could explain their choice.
Shame on you for the Bardem nod.
Ruth Negga is happening for sure, wow Cate Blanchett.
Afffleck looks to be the SAG Globe nod that goes nowhere, the Belfast men are in a bit of trouble now.
Regina King shows that you can still win the Oscar even after a SAG snub, but yeah, it does indeed look like Kristen Stewart is no longer the frontrunner and Nicole Kidman is looking at her second Oscar.
What's sad is how lazy the SAG nominees are as a whole, and the BAFTA longlists don't give much hope either. I'm still predicting Drive My Car to be in the Best Picture lineup on Oscar nomination morning, but I also wouldn't be surprised if something like Being the Ricardos makes it in instead. It could very well be one of those years where we all end up saying "they had THESE to choose from, and they opted for THOSE?!" I swear to god if Jared Leto actually gets nominated for the Oscar...
Ricardos everywhere. They still want to be precursors.
Remember how I posted a week or so ago, asking why you all were predicting Cruz? Yeah.
I agree with Mr. Ripley. Why even consider Mark Rylance for a nom anywhere? He is terrible in Don’t Look Up.
About SAG, bad news for KStew: snubbed for the laziest choice ever (Jennifer Hudson, really?).
I don't understand why they release the longlists - they're so embarrassing for the BAFTAs and really only show how much worse the actual list of nominees could have been.
Love that Ana de Armas made this list. Rather surprised there wasn't more love from the BAFTAs for The Green Knight.
So last year was just for funsies...? Because they're clearly back to their typical BAFTAs bs. LOL, like what in the Oscar predictions is this?
It's like they went to GoldDerby and copied and pasted.
This is really bad, and feels just like the 2019 nominations. It's all American films or British films that are going to do well with Oscar (e.g., Belfast, etc.).
I am glad to see Ali and Ava got a few citations, but the top category, as well as directing, are the big tells for where these voters are looking. It's clear they're not very interested in British films, which just feels unfair to their industry.
At the same time, it is great to see Ana de Armas here. I'd love to see them go crazy for Bond and nominate her. And, I love that Rebecca Hall was cited for her directing and for her first feature. I suspect only Ruth Negga will make it through given the film isn't in the top category, but it's great to see it here.
LMAO Mark Rylance was the best part of Don’t Look Up!!!
LOVING my Passing girls showing here
Strong showing for West Side Story. Was No Way Home ineligible?
Surprised/disappointed that they seem to have gone back to the more Oscary trends... last year's committee-based nominations were much more indie and British-leaning. Looking at the acting shortlists there are only 3 or 4 actors from films that aren't from mainstream Holywood projects.
@Working Stiff: yeah, Spiderman couldn't qualify because they failed to make screeners available ahead of the deadline.
Man, I was hoping Nishijima or the Titane folks could at least make it to the long list here.
Also, what is with First Cow's international distribution? It's from 2019!
Jack C -- well, even here in the US it was 2020. so it's just one of those movies (sadly there are so many of them that take two years to get places
"I am an Oscar winner, give my best performance ever, in a film directed by a living legend, and praised by critics, I am raved, and the only thing I got is the lousy Volpi Cup"
Just kidding... but why is Cruz's masterful performance being ignored beyond Venice, LAFCA and NSFC? I mean, wow.
But at least we know already that Almodovar's next will be a surefire contender for Picture, Director, Actress (Blanchet) and Adapted Screenplay for 2023's season... unless he speeds the delivery to have it finished for this year.
