'Till' and 'Decision to Leave' open well while 'Halloween' wins again

By Ben Miller

For the third straight week, the October box office was dominated by scares.  The final (?) installment of David Gordon Green's trilogy Halloween Ends managed a healthy $40 million haul despite incredibly mixed reactions (40% Rotten Tomatoes, C+ CinemaScore) and a day-and-date release on Peacock.  Expect a large second-week drop.  Elsewhere, well-received films continue to have legs.  Smile earned another $12+ million weekend, totaling over $70 million.  It might end up being one of the most profitable films of the year given its budget.  The Woman King is also holding steady with a total just under $60 million now.

On the limited/platform side, awards hopefuls Till (with a shot at Best Actress) and South Korea's Oscar submission Decision to Leave both debuted with large per-screen averages ahead of their expansions.  Till managed over $240k on just 16 screens.  The film's box office might propel its awards chances even higher.

What did you watch this weekend? I caught both Till and Decision to Leave, as well as the 1944 noir Laura.  I also watched Shrek with my kids for a lighter change of pace.

Laura is a stone cold classic and should be required viewing.

I watched Bros in a over half empty theater but with mostly male/female couples. They all laughed and seemed to enjoy the movie (as did I) but were shocked by how gross and weird the gay sex scenes were. To be honest, all sex is gross and weird, but if you are only used to one kind…

Also watched Near Dark and I was so absorbed in the movie I forget to eat food that I had cooked. Very under appreciated horror film.

I saw Hellraiser 2022 and Smile, both okay middle of the road horrors but nothing to induce sleepless nights,I expect sequels to both.

Also saw I could go on singing Judy's last film and very good she is in it

Becket 1965 O'Toole on top form Burton less so,why was Gielgud a nominee for this.

The Best Man 1964 political drama with a great cast

Halloween 2018 still as iffy as I remembered,Curtis seems to be concealing a smirk with some of the hokey dialogue.

Predator 2 loud crass and no fun.

anyone see TERRIFIER 2? Looks like it is doing amazingly well for a gore-soaked indie horror film.

Heard reports of people fainting / vomiting in theaters. - LOL

I assumed Till was a Christmas release; I didn't realize it was already out and haven't read much about it since it wasn't at the festivals. Looks like the reviews are good but it doesn't feel like Deadwyler's crashing into the Best Actress race in a big way, does it?

This really feels like Yeoh's year. Well deserved, and it's amazing the momentum they've created and maintained for her. She's on magazine covers as we speak! From here she picks up a couple major critics prizes (she's easy for film snobs to embrace) and I can see the televised precursors breaking for her too since the film was a hit and she's so en vogue this year.

There are much stronger performances in this year's Best Actress race than last year's but it feels like the pool of possible winners is much smaller. Blanchett is phenomenal in TAR but I think Yeoh's narrative beats her bid for a *third* Oscar. Ditto Colman's second. And The Fabelmans doesn't feel like a Best Actress vehicle, however good Williams is in her lead-ish role.

A re-watch of Lonesome Ghosts on Disney+ and a first-timer in Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

DEADSTREAM has been my favourite new release horror movie this season, it's on Shudder.

Love to see WOMAN KING doing well and not sinking like DARLING did despite opening to similar numbers.
