Movie Stars Ruled the Weekend's Box Office

By Ben Miller

Don't let the haters tell you that movie stars don't matter.  The Dwayne Johnson led DC entry Black Adam easily won the weekend with $67 million.  That's Johnson's biggest opening for a film without the words Fast, Furious, or Mummy.  George Clooney & Julia Roberts counterprogramming rom-com Ticket to Paradise did just fine for itself with a $16.5 million opening.  Those two films expect to have some legs as there are no big openings release until Black Panther: Wakanda Forever on November 11th. And there are only 8 movies in wide release at that. The theaters need more movies...

On the limited/platform side, gorefest Terrifier 2 continues to make a ton of money against a $250k budget.  It's already made 20x its budget, and it's expanding to 1000+ theaters next weekend.  Martin McDonagh's The Banshees of Inisherin was the per-theater champ with a $46k average on just four screens.  Most of the Oscar hopefuls in limited release are doing well as awards season looms. Banshees expands Friday alongside fellow Oscar-hopeful Till

What did you watch this weekend? I stayed in a scary movie mood with a rewatch of The Shining.  I also had a pair of Oscar-winning first-time watches with The Song of Bernadette and Terms of Endearment.

Some awful short film on MUBI called Soliloquy and a re-watch of Michael Mann's The Keep.

Idris Elba in Beast entertaining Jaws with Claws.

Nothing but a Man a must watch 60's independent movie with mostly black cast

Dr Strangelove wish I could've enjoyed it more, loved Scott though.

The Temp laughable 90's thriller,Faye Dunaway at her worst even the stunt double was more convincing.

Saw Decision to Leave, and it's a perfect movie: mysterious, beautiful, funny, romantic, clever. Adored it.

The Adelaide Film Festival ruled my weekend, seeing 12 (of my eventual 32) films:

- International Film Oscar submissions BOY FROM HEAVEN, CLOSE, RETURN TO SEOUL, XALE, HOLY SPIDER, EO (all good)

- queer curio WILL-O'-THE-WISP (most unusual film of the year for me, but good)

- doco INTO THE ICE (nothing ground-breaking, but spectacular on the big screen)

- Indonesian debut AUTOBIOGRAPHY (not bad, but I am bewildered as to why it won a prize here at AFF)

- NZ biopic WHINA (awful, I left after an hour, giving myself a needed festival break)

- world film festival travellers WAR PONY and LA JAURIA (both good)

Lots of movies at home. Sign of the times, I guess.

After Yang - Meh

Catherine Birdy - yikes

Argentina 1985 - brilliant. Starting my Ricardo DarΓn for Best Lead Actor campaign.

Nitram - very good. Why is no one pushing for Judy Davis? She has never been better.

Turned off the lights and watched "Barbarian" The first quarter was so well done...very creepy. Then it was OK, then it was silly, then it was scary, then it was eye rolling, then it was over. This movie was really hyped up as the best horror movie of the year, that's a stretch. My advice is to watch it knowing nothing and give yourself over to it.

Ben--what did you think of The Song of Bernadette? It's a favorite of mine starring my favorite actress Jennifer Jones. She is truly spectacular in this. Pardon the pun, but I think her performance is something of a miracle. She has to radiate this purity and faith throughout a two and half hour film, and she does it religiously. I also think the movie is relevant to today--it has a lot to say about white male patriarchy, marginalization of women, abuse of religion and political malfeasance.

@brookesboy

I have never liked Jennifer Jones in anything and this was no exception. She does nothing for me and I thought she did very little besides look angelic.

The film itself had a lot of interesting ideas, which they did not explore in the slightest bit. A real missed opportunity.
