Friday, April 1, 2022 at 3:25PM Nathaniel welcomes back Nick Davis to talk about making peace with Oscar night such as it was. It's the only Oscar podcast you'll hear that doesn't discuss The Incident! Instead we talk about our first Oscar nights as children as well as what we liked about Sunday's show (yes, there were a few things) and then the conversation drifts towards what's next. What do we hope to see from some of the actors and directors in the future?

Nick and Nathaniel, I think you'd both be impressed by Amy Forsyth's performance in THE NOVICE (and HELL FEST, honestly)
Great discussion! My first Oscars were the one's hosted by Hugh Jackman in 2009. I only knew three of the films nominated Slumdog Millionaire, The Dark Knight and Tropic Thunder. I hadn't become a full time film nerd yet, but I was getting started. Of all the films nominated I remember being curious and wanting to check out Departures and Waltz with Bashir. As well as The Visitor and Rachel Getting Married (the latter one my sister had watched and had recommended it).
I hope that in the future more thought is put in the presentation of the nominees in craft categories, as well the presentation of each film nominated for BEST PICTURE. The one that they did in 2015 for the Best Picture Title Sequence comes to mind, as an example of something that should do more often.
Off the top of my head why not get Julianne Moore, star of Vanya on 42nd Street to introduce Drive my car, and maybe even get a small video reel with her talking to the director and some of the actors?
I genuinely listen to old Film Experience podcasts fairly frequently just to listen to the combination of camaraderie and insight. This conversation might have been the best. So many bang on points.
a) I'm curious what Dan Laustsen does next, along with Wagner. Fraser's already done a lot I absolutely adore, so I'll check anything he does out.
b) In terms of performers in/around the conversation, I'm rather befuddled at how Negga could get nominated in 2016 in such a stacked category with such a meh performance but lose out this year in a weaker category with a really difficult and brilliant one. I know she probably would've bumped out Buckley, which would've been a shame, but if Dench missed out and Negga was there instead.... I'm curious what she does next now. Also curious about Buckley and DeBose as well.
c) Collaboration I want to see: I would love to see what Hamaguchi, Campion, Gyllenhaal or Villeneuve could pull from Rensave or Danielson Lie. And I know you mentioned it with less enthusiasm, but the idea of Washington in a Paul Thomas Anderson film is really interesting.
d) Nick, I do hope you check out Luca. It's a charmer and a tonic. Also, did I dream/imagine that you were working on a book about the 1999 cinema year?
e) The thing that fascinates me about AMPAS participating in diminishing it's own brand is that so many of the external factors that want to bring down the brand are those that recognize just how powerful a brand it is. I just don't understand why AMPAS itself doesn't.
f) A moment I really liked: Eilish's performance and Eilish/O'Connell's winning moment. Just lovely joy.

That's easy. One was a biopic performance and the other was not...
