What did you see over the weekend?

by Nathaniel R

We're doing things a little differently this week listing both box office and top movies in streaming from a few services because why not. (Let us know what you think). Sadly, despite plentiful signs that people are willing to go back to movie theaters, the studios just aren't putting enough movies in theaters. Only 8 movies are currently in wide release. Pre COVID there would sometimes be over 20 movies in wide release in a single week...

Regardless of quality, audiences will always turn out for Jurassic movies on account of giant dinosaurs. So though this is the last "Jurassic World" movie, after three "Jurassic Park" movies, there will surely be a third trilogy given the steadily gigantic box office. In happier news, Top Gun Maverick (which is a better movie than what it's sequelizing... unlike the dinosaurs) will become the biggest hit of 2022, topping Doctor Strange any day now.

Arthouse offerings aren't getting much attention at the moment but heads up that the big winner at France's César Awards, Lost Illusions, is now in limited release in the US.

NEW STREAMING
imperfect reporting since streaming doesn't really have many systems for that yet. this list excludes older films or series that are still poplular like "friends" "big bang theory" etcetera

If you're curious Fire Island (which we've been obsessing over) is currently  the #1 Hulu original at the moment but it's blocked from appearing higher here by holdover theatrical hits from 2021 that are now hitting the service.

A couple of first-timers in The Florida Project and Matthias & Maxime and a re-watch of Man of Steel.

Iโ€™ve been watching Heartstopper on Netflix. Lovely and adorable.

I did not watch the dinosaur movie because I'm not twelve.

I watched Adua and Her Friends with Simone Signoret and Emmanuelle Riva playing to retired whores who open a trattoria.

it is not the homosexual that is perverse but the society in which he lives - a german documentary from 1971 that points out all that is wrong with the gay lifestyle but ends up being a call to arms for gay rights. all narration and statically photographed with groups of men trying not to look at the camera. odd mix of dated and not at all. worth seeing for the fashions alone

Long weekend here, and used it to do a bunch of films at the German Film Festival: THE HOUSE (good), THE PATH (not bad, but weakest points were the scenes with only the child actors), THE LAST EXECUTION (good) and CONTRA (awfully mediocre, with uncontrollable laughing from me whenever a new cliche turned up. Pity, bcause there aren't enough movies about debating).

Also saw MEN, and wishing I had people to dissect it with, but I was on board with the whole thing, including the ending.

And A HERO, which is now on my "Best Of 2022" list. What an amazing writer Asghar Farhadi is, and he just seems to be getting better with each new movie!

I was travelling so the only movies I watched were on the flight back to the U.S. I kind of hate watching movies on planes, but it was a long flight and I couldn't sleep, so...

CYRANO - Had a little trouble focusing at times (again: I hate watching movies on planes) and thought the music was fairly forgettable (except for "Wherever I Fall"), but the performances and production design were good, and it does gain more emotional heft as it goes on. I admit I was tearing up at the end, so I guess it did its job.

THE LOST CITY - Uneven but pretty much perfect plane viewing, if not quite the 21st century Romancing the Stone. Channing Tatum, as always, was sneak-up-on-you good, and Daniel Radcliffe amusing as the spoiled-brat villain. Sandy was...fine. Watchable as she always is, but lately I've been wondering: everyone's always on Nicole Kidman about what she does to her face, but shouldn't we be making the same complaint about Bullock? I don't mean to be mean, just something I genuinely wonder about.

Lynn Lee -- i hear you on Bullock. I think it must come down to just that people feel very endeared to Sandra (who asks for the love always with her choices) whereas Nicole has always had a more volatile purposefully challenging relationship to audiences.

i had the same reaction to Cyrano. It had so much going for it that i was frustrated that i didnt like the music but that one song is sublime.

Travis -- i still need to see MEN

par -- that sounds fascinating.

thevoid -- i still have not seen matthias & max. i dont know why his films are always so tricky to access for US audiences. regularly having complicated, delayed, or blink and youll miss it releases.and i also dont see them pop up on streaming services often.
