Happy New Year! Here's to 2023

As you may have gleaned these past several months, 2022 was a very difficult year for your host here. I was out of comission a few times. Feeling hopeful about 2023, though, so to those of you who are still with us, just know that I appreciate you now more than ever. I'm still trying to climb back onto this long running horse. Considered putting this beautiful beast out to pasture but reconsidered. Would rather go out with a big win than a what-just-happened? disappointing finish. Should we make like Cher and announce a Farewell Tour... that goes on indefinitely? Anyway, the point is: onward. The year is young. Mere hours young!

Coming in January: The Oscar nominations and all the stuff that comes with that, "Split Decisions" where the team debates movies they disagree on, more Year in Review lists plus nominations for the annual Film Bitch Awards. And the return of the Smackdown.

P.S. Can you think of any movies with great New Year's Eve scenes aside from When Harry Met Sally

I'm glad you're keeping it going! I discovered TFE in 2007, and you've helped shape how I read movies, and where I find them.
I fully appreciate you and wish you a drama-free 2023.

Hopefully 2023 will bring a more even keel to life.

I just saw Sigourney in The Good House and if her mess of a character can start afresh so can we all, check it out,it's film to see with your Mum.

Thanks for reconsidering.

Happy New Year, and I’m obviously very happy you reconsidered so this wonderful blog can continue!

Other great New Year’s Eve scenes, though not exactly joyous ones like When Harry Met Sally, would be The Godfather Part II and Boogie Nights.

I've been a fan for over 20 years and excited to see the site continue to thrive with fresh voices and fun series. Here's to a fabulous 2023 and hoping this is one of your best years both personally and professionally, Nathaniel!

Personally, I'm hoping for a few 1973 retrospectives of some movies now turning 50!

Happy New Year, Nathaniel, and thank you for keeping this wonderful blog going! Looong time reader (I think I'm close to 20 years as well, my god) and you and your team have truly shaped how I experience the movies. Can't thank you enough & wishing you the best in 2023!

My guilty pleasure on New Year’s Eve has to be The Poseidon Adventure. With appearances by no less than five Oscar winners, this is arguably the ultimate disaster flick.

Happy new year to you, Nathaniel! In more than 20 years of reading the site, I'm more grateful than ever that you're still out here. I too hope for some 1973 retrospectives...looking forward to Paper Moon as one?

Gotta go with Phantom Thread. Great movie, and a terrific NYE scene

Happy New Year!

The first Sex and the City movie isn't perfect, but its New Years montage is gorgeous. I'm going to watch it right now. :)

Loyal reader since 2005. I remember when it was mostly a blogspot! Can't believe it's been almost 20 years, wow. (Been more of a lurker in the past couple years, but this post finally kicked me in the butt to register.)

The Film Experience has meant a lot to me in that time since I found it as a middle school kid, not just in how I watch movies, but it made me feel more at home in the world as I came into myself and queerness and feeling like I had a place where those ideas and interests and the movies that tried to reach out to us were celebrated. Really, truly: thank you.

My favorite New Year’s Eve scene is on Polanski’s Bitter Moon: Emanuelle Seigner and Kristin Scott-Thomas in beautiful gowns, kissing and dancing to Slave to Love definitely started my actressexuality.

I always think of Sunset Boulevard when I think of NYE in the movies, and the party thrown by the pre-Dragnet Jack Webb. Doesn't The Apartment end on NYE too?

Thank you for continuing! I've followed TFE for years too. I remember following during the years The Lord of the Rings films were nominated and remember the all-black screen after Crash won. Happy new year Nate and team, you're all essential to the Oscar experience and would be missed if you weren't here.

The happiest of New Years to you, Nathaniel. Been enjoying TFE for almost 15 years now.
Thank you!

Thanks for all you do Nathaniel, and hope 2023 will bring you more of what you deserve.

This will be my 20th year reading your site. You've attracted a great stable of talent!

For New Year's how about An Affair To Remember, since it's integral to the plot.

Let's hope 2023 is a better year than 2022.

NYE always makes me think of 200 Cigarettes. What I wouldn't give to attend Martha Plimpton's party, in the film, or any time, really.

Glad you are continuing the site for the foreseeable future! Been reading and loving TFE for 10+ years now.

never stop! Seriously, never stop. I've been reading this site for over 20 years. This site kept running because you have a following and this is a credible platform.

Finbar McBride- I watched The Towering Inferno. Apparently both Inferno and Poseidon were NYE staples on tv here and in Europe for a long time.

Nathaniel- I been reading this blog since college- almost 20 years ago. I’ve loved movies for such a long time and from an early age, but not everyone in my circle understood nor appreciated that. I was just the weird movie guy. But finding this blog showed me a whole world of information about filmmaking and the people who love them. I visit here everyday because it feels like a second home. A community of people who understand me. I’m forever grateful for that. You and the whole team are excellent writers. I hope you continue for years to come.

ONE WAY PASSAGE, with the amazing Kay Francis, ends on New Year's Eve. It is one of Hollywood's most romantic concoctions. Beautiful, heartbreaking, but still capable of leaving you smiling through your tears. A bit like Life, actually.

Bonne année à tous !
Happy new year Nathaniel and all the readers of this amazing blog. Thank you for your lists, analysis and unmatched coverage of the International Oscar race.
I'm so glad to be a faithful TFE reader, subscriber and occasional contributor.

As for New Year's Eve scenes, I'm thinking of the opening sequence in "Camille Rewinds". It's a film I love more and more each year.

I've been reading this site for twenty years now. The Film Experience MUST live on! It brings me such joy. I can't imagine my movie-going life without it. Thank you Nathaniel, to you and your team, for all you do here. Happy New Year and here's to a better 2023!

The Fabulous Baker Boys! Not a better NYEve scene to be found!

Nathaniel, thank you so much for everything you do. Happy New Year!

Oh, Nathaniel, I'm sorry last year was so tough. TFE is one of my favorite entertainment sites, and you have assembled an amazing group of contributors. Cheers and here's to a much better, healthier, and happier 2023. Long live TFE!

I'm with Peggy Sue. I LOVE the NYE scene in Out of Africa. And damn that Sydney Pollack for not allowing more steamy scenes between Streep and Redford. They were magic together.

Dear Nathaniel, I always feel such gratitude to you for setting such a good example, maintaining your love and enthusiasm for movies, and your curiosity to explore and appreciate all kinds of good things. And all while maintaining a thoughtful reasonableness and a care to include multiple viewpoints.

We all wish the best for you, and if some major publication offers you a job with lots of money, you deserve it all and more.
