Hollywood Awards 2011. Something For Everyone (& the Fanboys)
The annual pubicity stunt that is the Hollywood Film Festival Awards have been announced. The ceremony will take place on October 24th, 2011. No publicity is bad publicity so this is good news for all of the recipients, especially since in most cases they are blocking some direct competition from picking up the very same free publicity. (Not that publicity is free but... oh never mind.) Just for fun I've included the past two years of recipients in italics below this year's honor so you can gauge their general behavior (which is erratic in terms of titles of awards, number of recipients, and whether it has any reflection of general awards season hoopla).

Their "Movie of the Year" prize (won by Inception last year and Star Trek the year before) you can vote on yourself since they do this in conjunction with Yahoo Movies. The nominees are...
- Captain America: The First Avenger
- Cowboys & Aliens
- Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part Two
- The Help
- Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
- Rango
- Rise of the Planet of the Apes
- Super 8
- Transformers Dark of the Moon
- X-Men First Class
Movie of the Year is short for Fanboy Film of the Year since, despite the weird anomaly of The Help, they go strictly boy-appeal f/x driven blockbusters. They lean that way so hard that they're willing to toss out a big hit like Bridesmaids in order to include a movie virtually nobody likes to drive the target-audience point home (hi, Cowboys and Aliens!).

So Jessica Chastain basically gets two awards... did this ever happen before?
I'm so happy for Carey Mulligan, hopefully she will get an oscar nom for 'Shame' too; Can't wait until 'Shame' is out in the UK :D
Brett-- i just saw SHAME yesterday and Carey is fantastic in it.
A breakthrough-award for JGL? Where have they spent the last couple of years.
(And makes you wonder who will get it next year. Ryan Gosling possibly. Or JGL once more.)
Jessica Chastain could not make more sense for a breakthrough award and JGL could not be further from it. Why not just give it to Clint next year?
you are right ... most of these are laughable... but there are some worthy recipients... especially Chastain ... JGL is a hoot.... he should have gotten this award 10 or 11 years ago!
Should the Academy wait to give Chastain the Oscar until she's a lead actress nominee?
@Nathaniel R, Glad to hear she is fantastic in it; I've been a fan of hers since she was in Doctor Who! lol
people are complaining that they awarded JGL, pretty much giving him a boost in terms of buzz and momentum for more awards?something named the hollywood awards could do so much worse.
I just wanna know one thing about these... awards: what is the deal with the Milla Jovovich spotlighting in 2010?
Their Director prize has gone to 2 Oscar winners, pretty good, anyway so happppppy to see Carey wins something for Shame.
But it’s just weird to see something or someone wins when the film is not even released yet, like Young Adult and J. Edgar.
has anyone seen Williams in My Week with Marylin or read the script for Young Adult? These awards seem to go by buzz, which would also explain how Hilary Swank won two years ago for Amelia.
Totally prescindible awards
