Vanity Fair 2011: "The Young and Beautiful"

Cover shot by Norma Jean Roy

The annual Hollywood Issue cover of Vanity Fair has been revealed with. It's called "The Young and Beautiful"

After the jump I've broken it down into sections so you can see it more clearly... still waiting for a super hi-res version though you can see a fairly good image at Vanity Fair's site. But nothing hi-res enough to print or see faces beautifully large. VF's site links are  malfunctioning so you can't yet read about the making of the cover just yet.

But here's blown up images for you... I'm a giver.

Green Lantern, Jakey, Oscar Hosts (and Future Winners?)

Still ascending superstars Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway and James Franco get the cover. The rest of the stars have to settle for the foldout; "The Young and Beautiful" "The Hollywood Food Chain"

Lawrence, Mackie, Wilde, Eisenberg and Kunis

On the middle fold we see Jennifer Lawrence and Olivia Wilde sandwiching lucky man Anthony Mackie, Olivia Wilde. Then precursor season fixtures Jesse Eisenberg and Mila Kunis. Love Mila's outfit and placement. Talk about focus pulling.

Although if we're talking about "focus pulling" practically all I can see in this middle section is the headline "When Thelma Met Louise (and Brad): The Making of a Revolutionary Film" YES PLEASE.

Duvall, JGL, Spider-Man, Beautiful Feline, Rashida Jones, Hedlund, The Original Lisbeth Salander

I'm not sure if Robert Duvall, peaking between the sultry sloped lines of Mila Kunis's pose and seated Joseph Gordon Levitt make it onto the middle fold or if he's in the crease. But he gets a special credit...

And introducing Robert Duvall as Fritz, the gruff but sage bartender.

Cute.

But here we see Duvall, JGL, Andrew Garfield, Rashida Jones (I didn't recognize her! From a distance I totally thought it was Marion Cotillard), Garrett Hedlund and Noomi Rapace. For no good reason at all the the kitty cat doesn't get a credit.

Only time will tell if some of these people are like "who?" in ten years. Investigations of past covers (we used to do those at the old blog) reveal that fortunes vary wildly after this big cover "I'm Hot Right Now!" moment.

Who would you bet on as the 5 biggest stars from this cover come 2019?
They claim these are "just the most exciting actors and actresses of the moment" so who would you say is missing? I mean besides Ryan Gosling...

Robert Duvall, in a class of his own, will still be delivering great performances in 2019.

Biggest stars: Joseph Gordon Levitt, Rashida Jones, Ryan Reynolds.
- JGL is a hard worker, and a smart guy who will be around for a long time and gets better looking all the time.
- Jones, also, will stay beautiful for years, has a comic gift, can do drama, and is instantly likeable (a Sandra Bullock type)
- Ryan Reynolds can be hilariously funny as well as gorgeous looking. As actor's careers last longer than actresses, he'll be around for the next few decades.

- James Franco will be a filmmaker and iconoclast, etc.
- Anne Hathaway will be an established star, dividing her time between films and the theatre, and will be one of the next to win the acting trifecta of Oscar, Emmy, Tony.
- Olivia Wilde and Mila Kunis will be great in their new TV shows. Wilde also produces her show, which gets critical raves for being wildly original.
- Noomi Rapace had filled a gap in the need for unusual and offbeat celebrities and has her own successful clothing line and talk show.
- Garrett Hedlund and Jennifer Laurence are working actors of moderate success.
- Andrew Garfield, like Jeremy Irons before him, says the wrong things in Hollywood and can't get work there. He goes back to England and is regarded as one of their best.
- Jesse Eisenberg is a well-respected actor who gets good reviews but never really caught on with a wider public. Some of his more interesting performances have confused producers, who don't know what to make of him, so they go with someone else.
- Jake Gyllenhaal is already over. He becomes a producer.
- Anthony Mackie delivers a series of increasingly skilled performances in little seen films, which everyone who sees them adores.

Ryan Gosling should be on the front cover. Period.

Lots of votes for Gosling.

I do wish Greta Gerwig had been here too but I suppose she's too fringe for VanityFair.

i get bugged when people make actors so sterotyped like "jesse eisenberg's nerdy look" or "jgl's an indie household name"... even though that's been working for some people [yes, you ellen page!], a lot of people said anne hathaway would be the makeover girl forever; and who honestly could see that besides the hot silly-funny girl from "that's 70's show", mila kunis could be the hot mysterious girl so fairly?

all i'm saying is i'm still a believer of the power of good acting beyond hollywood buzzy crap. it's easy for us to believe the hype and replace them on their most iconic characters places - no matter how well studied we claim to be, we all end up doing that!

and yes, where's emma stone?!! and armie hammer and rooney mara?

good point Lucas. And if actors don't shake up out of our complacent ideas about them, maybe they aren't great actors.

as for Armie Hammer. I've noticed an abundance of praise for him for months now and I still don't quite get it and i've seen TSN like 5 times ;) but i'm willing to assume i missed something or he just doesn't do it for me. But Rooney Mara? more please. Immediately.

Yeah, you just missed the boat on how awesome Armie Hammer is. Can't wait to see him in "J. Edgar"! Or see less of him clothed. Whichever comes first.
