Sweet Sally

Happy birthday to Sally Hawkins who turns 35 today.

We love her. In fact, if that's a love note she's holding we probably sent it! Submarine is on the screening schedule for tomorrow. Can't wait.

After Happy-Go-Lucky and Made in Dagenham we wonder what kind of miracle it's going to take to get her an Oscar nomination.

Happy Birthday to an amazing talent.
Quality scripts should be delivered to her doorstep by the truckload. Get on it, Hollywood!

She was also amazing in the British TV adaption of Sarah Water's Victorian-lesbian novel "Fingersmith", with Imelda Stauton in a supporting role, no less. (Sally! Imelda!)

But there seems to be a level of the top-top of the hollywood heap, where you are almost assured of getting at least one nomination, never mind an award, even if the performance is not the greatest (I'm looking at you, Miss Bullock) or get nommed for simply breathing (And you too, Ms Streep and Ms Blanchett - as much as I love you both). I don't think Sally is quite on that list - too british? too quirky? Not pretty enough? Not ambitious enough?

And given some of AMPAS' decisions lately, I say "screw the freakin' Oscars" and go along with Mike's wish for "quality scripts".

Happy Birthday Sally! I'm surprised she hasn't had more major roles following "Happy-Go-Lucky" especially since she won the Golden Globe. She's done a lot of supporting ("An Education" "Never Let Me Go" "Desert Flower" "It's A Wonderful Afterlife" "Jane Eyre") roles since then, while I believe (and hope) "Happy Ever Afters" was filmed before her Golden Globe win. "Made in Dagenham" should've earned her a second Golden Globe nomination, but necessarily a win. As for her Oscar chances for that performance, I knew she was a longshot. But nonetheless, I'm happy to have been introduced to her courtesy of Mike Leigh and Woody Allen's films.

British actresses work forever which is a quite a blessing...

She is an amazing, extraordinary, amazing, amazing talent. Her IMDB page is curiously barren at the moment, so here's hoping Mike Leigh and/or Woody Allen will come to the rescue soon. And I know it's foolish to even think it, but perhaps there's awards potential for her turn in Submarine? A fool can hope.

There’s a Submarine screening where? Oh, don’t get me jealous now.

Her Happy Go-Lucky character is extremely unlikeable and if that's your first introduction to Sally Hawkins: she's forever ruined until!

I thought she was the best part of Submarine. And I really enjoyed the film overall. Have fun!
