Curio: Bubblegum Card Oddities
Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 9:00AM Alexa here. Everyone knows that there is a whole universe devoted to sports trading cards, with stories of someone selling their Mickey Mantle card for thousands. Of course a similar form of geekdom revolves around sci fi films, with Thor and Star Wars trading cards produced by the truckload. But occasionally I run across some vintage film trading cards that I find a little unexpected. Here are some I've enjoyed.
Yes, I bought this complete set of Saturday Night Fever trading cards about 15 years ago. You'll be happy to know that I didn't spend all that much; apparently a card of Tony Manero in his black briefs isn't worth much in the open market. The unopened packages still had gum! My favorite part was being able to assemble the poster image from the back of the set.
Although it makes sense that they produced Alien trading cards in 1979 (in a feeble attempt to ride the Star Wars sci fi wave) I find it hilarious that this means there are trading cards out there of Veronica Cartwright and Harry Dean Stanton!
But wait there's more: Marlon Brando, Mia Farrow and...
Similarly, I take great pleasure in these Superman: The Movie cards of Marlon.
Finally, I had forgotten that Supergirl: The Movie even existed (remember that brief Helen Slater moment in the 80s?). So little did I know that Mia Farrow played her mother. Here is the sticker card to prove it.

I used to play an old VHS tape of Supergirl when I babysit my two little nieces back in the day. They were wild about it. It was "uncle, please, put it on again" and I couldn't bear it. I taped something else (I think it was Mary Poppins) on top of it. To this day (and my nieces are now in their 20's) they haven't forgotten me.

Helen Slater. There's a Helen Slater every few years and everyone pretends like every rising actress will be famous forever.
Who do you think is today's Helen Slater? Olivia Wilde?
Lara -- good guess! It might even be Megan Fox if she disappears in the next year or so ;) although maybe she's too famous already to ever totally fade.
Alien seems like the weirdest movie to have cards for - in 1979 the only people I knew who collected such things were other kids, what kid would have even gotten into that theater? That's a little like McDonald's producing a Happy Meal to promote a slasher film, isn't it?
