I haven't seen "The Help" (yet) I plan to do tomorrow
I haven't seen "Rise of the planet of the apes" & I don't think I will
The best scene in "Bridesmaid" is when ... well there is too many, but I guess the "Dress Shopping scene" (If u know what I mean..) is for me an instant classic!
I want it to be nominated for (at least) 4 Oscars ( a guy can always dream...)
The Best scene in "Momie Dearest" is when she goes Crazy in the garden & destroy everything (the fact that she's wearing a gorgeous "evening" gown helps a lot...)

I'm hopefully seeing The Help sometime this week.

My favorite scene in Rise of the Planet of the Apes is Caesar's thrilling first climb through the redwoods. I want it nominated for four Oscars (maybe not Best Picture, though it is my favorite of the year thus far, but certainly visual effects, both sounds, and editing).

The best scene in Wet Hot American Summer is...pretty much all of them. The trip into town is hilarious, and so is any time Paul Rudd pushes a kid out of the van.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJason H.

My face scene in the help is when minny gives hilly that pie. Best in show is totes a tie between Viola Davis and Jessica Chastain.

My face scene in RotPotA is the fight on the golden gate bridge.

The best scene in XMen: First Class was when Charles helped magneto to move that satellite. I want it to be nominated for 2 oscars (visual effects and picture)

The best scene in LA Confidential is a tie between when guy Pearce was interrogating the kids or the scene where he was confessing to shooting James Cromwell ( the reflection of the men listening on the two way mirror is perfection)

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTerence

The best scene in Midnight in Paris is when Zelda Fitzgerald is at the river. I want it to be nominated for every Oscar. Sort of. Not Owen. Maybe Bates/Pill for Supporting (ain't gonna happen), Cotillard for Leading (not a chance), Screenplay (good chance), Costumes (please?), Director (not happening), Art Direction (pretty please?), Picture (stupid rules change).

The best scene in Dario Argento's Inferno is when the young woman goes into the basement and drops her keys into the flooded subbasement. Beautiful and scary beyond belief.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRobert G

My fav' scene in The Help is the one where Aibilene (Viola Davis) tells the story of her son. Best-in-show is totes when Winnie (Octavia Spencer) watches Hilly (Bryce Dallas Howard) eat her pie.

My fav' scene in Rise of the Planet of the Apes is any and every scene with Caesar. Performance of the year so far.

The best scene in Beginners is the poignant conclusion. I want it to be nominated for 3 Oscars (Original Screenplay, Supporting Actor- Christopher Plummer, and Score.)

The best scene in Source Code is when Jake Gyllenhaal's character speaks with his dad on the phone.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChase Hilton

Haven't seen The Help. Not released in Korea yet.

My fav' scene in Rise of the Planet of the Apes is when Caeser says no.

The best scene in A Separation is the ending. I want it to be nominated for foreign language film Oscars.

The best scene in Life in a Day is also the ending.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJin

My fave scene in The Help was the last scene where Mae Moebly repeats Abileen's affirmations: "I is kind. I is smart. I is important." Holy Crap, that little girl wrecked me. Best in Show is Viola Davis. I hope her Oscar buzz keeps up.

The best scene in Rise of the Planet of the Apes is when Ceasar says "NO!" Many in my screening had an audible reaction to that. (The Apes taking down Draco Malfoy is a close second though!)

The best scene in Bridesmaids is when Melissa McCarthy tries to talk some sense to Kristin Wiig after she goes apeshit at the Bridal Shower. I loved how the movie really combined humor with some depth and a great examination of female friendship. It would be amazing if it could get Oscar noms...but it is totes not "serious" enough for the Academy, and I think Golden Globes will be its best shot.

My favorite scene (one of them) in Crazy Stupid Love is when Ryan Gosling tries to pick Emma Stone up in the bar. I swear I was blushing/giggling in my theatre seat. I soooooooooo would have fallen for his moves.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKim

My fav' scene in The Help is the one where ... I don't know, honestly. Best-in-show is totes Jessica Chastain .

My fav' scene in Rise of the Planet of the Apes is Caesar telling James Franco's character that he is home.

The best scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II is when Snape's true intentions are revealed . I want it to be nominated for 10 Oscars (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Visual Effects, Best Make-Up, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction and at least one or two acting nominations)... It'll be lucky to get five of those, unfortunately.

The best scene in "One Day" is the final scene (not gonna spoil it) .

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDaniel Armour

The best scene in The Help is the final Aibilee-Hilly showdown. Damn, Viola Davis. Literally quivering in my seat. Best in show is Viola Davis. Is there really any other answer to that question?

I haven't seen (and don't plan to see) Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

The best scene in Midnight in Paris is either the first scene with the Fitzgeralds or (secret favorite) Adrien Brody's Dali/"ry-nos-or-us" bit. I hope it gets nominated for 2 Oscars: Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress (Marion Cotillard). Also, one for Rachel McAdams... kidding.

The best scenes in "To Die For" are Nicole Kidman's monologues to the audience. Amazing. Where was that Oscar nomination?

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMatthew

My fav' scene in The Help is the one where we find out about Celia's miscarriages. Best-in-show is totes Viola Davis, for sure - though I *enjoyed* watching Jessica Chastain more .

My fav' scene in Rise of the Planet of the Apes is when the FREAKING GORILLA JUMPS INTO THE FREAKING HELICOPTER.

The best scene in The Tree of Life is when everyone meets up with the people they've lost on that gorgeous beach. I want it to be nominated for 12 Oscars (Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay, Score, Cinematography, Art Direction, Costumes, Editing, and Visual Effects, just for those dinosaurs, because why the hell not).

The best scene in Fright Night is anytime a vampire gets staked and starts skittering and squealing. Also, anytime a vampire's jaw gets all unhinged and bitey and it's face gets all scary.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered Commentertess

The Help is not yet released in Spain

My fav scene in Rise of the Planet of the Apes is when Ceasar says "NO!". But followed closely by Ceasar riding the horse, the gorilla against the horse and the hellicopter, and love the tribute to the first film: Ceasar making a Statue of Liberty puzzle.

My fav scene of Bridesmaids is the toast battle between Wiig and Byrne. AMAZING. And also love Wiig against the giant cookie and the fondue.

My fav scene of Captain America is a tie between the moment with Alan Menken's song and the first chase scene with Atwell shooting, Evans running (mmm..), the boy that can swim and all the beautiful recreation of the city. And honorable mention to Evans' butt right after the end credits (and Thor's arm)

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDeivith Coast

I forgot, I want Bridesmaids to be nominated for at least four Oscars, specially Byrne and Wiig's excellence. Know that's not going to happen.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDeivith Coast

My favorite' scene in The Help is the last in the film, where Viola Davis gets her big moment. It was so moving. However, I think best-in-show is totes Sissy Spacek...she was just irresistible!

My favorite scene in Rise of the Planet of the Apes is when Caesar talks for the first time.

The best scene in The Tree of Life is either the beautiful montage set to the music from the Moldau or the creation sequence. I want it to be nominated for 8 Oscars, at least (Picture, Director, Supp. Actor, Supp. Actress, Cinematography, Score, Visual Effects and Screenplay).

The best scene in Moulin Rouge! is...gosh how can you pick??? It was the first time I saw it and I fell absolutely in love with every moment of that film.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRobert

My fav' scene in The Help is the one where Aibileen first talks about her son, Treelore. Best-in-show is totes Viola Davis (closely followed by the surprisingly versatile Jessica Chastain) .

My fav' scene in Rise of the Planet of the Apes is (haven't seen it yet, but probably any scene without Frieda Pinto).

The best scene in Bridesmaids is when Melissa McCarthy visits Kristin Wiig after the blow up at the bridal shower (so much chance for sappy bullshit, but she cuts it to her straight) . I want it to be nominated for 3 Oscars.

The best scene in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is the sequence when older Daisy is taking care of the elderly/infant Benjamin. Visually and tonally perfect (with such under-appreciated work from Blanchett) and slays me every time.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChris

I have not seen either The Help of Rise of the Planet of the Apes (though I plan on seeing both pretty soon), but I wanted to take a crack at the third one, just because I feel the film is already starting to get overlooked.

The best scene in 'Beginners' is when Anna gives Oliver a tour of her apartment over the phone. Such a brilliant illustration of how connected and disconnected they are at the moment (there are several scenes that I loved, but that's totally my favorite). I want it to be nominated for (at least) 5 Oscars (Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Original Screenplay). I realize that Plummer is the only one who has a shot in Supporting, one can dream. Such a beautifully melancholy film.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJames C.

So let me get this straight, the combined readership that's wonderful enough to comment before have just absorbed the following movies:

MOMMIE DEAREST
WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER
LA CONFIDENTIAL
INFERNO
SOURCE CODE
LIFE IN A DAY
CRAZY STUPID LOVE
ONE DAY
TO DIE FOR
FRIGHT NIGHT
CAPTAIN AMERICA
and
MOULIN ROUGE!

and BRIDESMAIDS is the communal favorite movie of the year thus far.

I love it. it's like the world's most erratic film festival.

Deivith -- i'm with you on the toast battle. every time i realized it wasn't going to stop i loved the movie even more (i lurve bravely long character scenes).

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNathaniel R

James -- WOW. you're right about forgotten.... i mean, i had totally forgotten about that scene and you're right that it's melancholy and just beautiful (and thematically spot on). Maybe i see too many movies. so easy to forget favorite parts.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNathaniel R

My favorite scene in "The Help" is the one in which Aibileen finally tells off Hilly. Best-in-show is totes Davis (DUH!). She does more with her face in brief flashes than most actors do in entire performances.

My favorite scene in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" is the one in which Caesar first speaks. That "NO!" could have caused an earthquake.

[Oddly enough, I can't say I have a *favorite* film so far, though I've enjoyed quite a few.]

The best scene in "The Devil Wears Prada" is the character intro for Miranda Priestly. It has been duplicated a few times since but never matched.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

I will also say that I was surprisingly touched by Aunjanue Ellis's two big scenes in "The Help" as well, which made me wonder why she doesn't work more often.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

My favourite scene in The Help is the one where Abileen flees home on the night of Medger Evers' death. The best in show is Viola Davis.

My favourite scene in The Rise of the Planet of the Apes is when Caesar speaks for the first time.

The best scene in Captain America: The First Avenger is the commiseration between Steve and Dr. Erskine prior to the experiment. I want the film to be nominated for four Oscars (makeup, original song [which it should definitely win], special effects, costume design).

The best scene in The Tree of Life is the part where the kid contemplates murdering his father.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSC

Troy -- agreed on Ellis. I didn't know her but really liked her brief work.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNathaniel R

My fav' scene in The Help is ..it wasn't released in Thailand

My fav' scene in Rise of the Planet of the Apes is Caesar saying no.

The best scene in X-Men : First Class is when Erik fought his way to the Russian General's house. I want it to be nominated for Screenplay Oscars.

The best scene in Larry Crowne is when ...I don't know, maybe somewhere in the middle at the moment when i decided to stop using my brain and/or questioning the contents of the film and start absorbing whatever day-dream positivity Tom Hanks was throwing at me

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChamp

Haven't seen The Help.

My favorite scene in 'Apes' is the credits b/c it meant that movie was over.

The best scene in my 2nd favorite movie this year, Hanna, is the ending line callback to a previous scene and the cut. I want that movie to get a lot of Oscar noms it won't get, but it definitely deserves score.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRJ

I'm afraid to say that I have zero interest in seeing The Help. Too many bad combo of things but I was mildly curious about Chastain's role for a hot minute.

My fav scene in Rise of the Planet of the Apes is the whole last act, basically. Everything just works wonderfully. Love the during-credits coda about the virus.

The best scene in Beginners was every time there was a scene with the adorable dog and his translations. I want it to be nominated for 3 Oscars - Actor, Screenplay, Editing. Supp Actor seem inevitable so I went the other way. Plus, I was more invested in Ewan's performance the whole time -- my fave of the year, I'd say.

The best scene in White Light, Black Rain is when the survivors are talking about the gruesome effects of the radiation. It was graphic but necessary. Though as a whole, the BBC special from 2005 was better.

BTW I love that someone else saw Life In A Day - what a fascinating film that was! And some of the best moments/most striking of the year too.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMark

Haven't seen The Help.

My fav' scene in Rise of the Planet of the Apes is the Golden Gate climax.

The best scene in The Tree Of Life is when when R.L. forgives Jack after he tricks him (although a specific "scene" is kind of hard to pinpoint in Tree Of Life ). I want it to be nominated for 14 Oscars.

The best scene in Sucker Punch is when Abbie Cornish does something sexy, which is most of the time, and Sucker Punch is horrific.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLev Lewis

The best scene in "Crazy Stupid Love" is Emma Stone's random impression of Lauren Bacall. Well, it's stuck in the middle of a pretty great scene, but that was my favorite unexpected laugh line.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterD

best scene in Bridesmaids might be the airplane scene. I was laughing so hard before it even got to "stove".

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPoppy

My favorite scene in The Help is the pie eating scene. I think Octavia Spencer is best in show, but Sissy Spacek would be up there.

My favorite scene in ROTPOTA is the scene where Caesar sees the couple walking the dog in Muir Woods and wonders if he is a pet. I think it features the best motion capture shots in the movie.

The best scene in Bridesmaids is either the plane scene or the "ugly carrott" scene with Kristen Wiig and Chris O'Dowd. I would like it to be nominated for 5 Oscars (Picture, Original Screenplay, Actress for Wiig, Supporting Actor for O'Dowd, and Supporting Actress for either McDonnell or Byrne). Also, a SAG ensemble nom is well in order.

The best scene of All Quiet on the Western Front is the opening scene in the classroom. The editing and cinematography in that film feels WAY ahead of its time.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterWilliam

I haven't seen the Help yet, and am not planning to.

My favorite scene in the Planet of the Apes is when James Franco tells Caesar to get in the car, after he first climbs the redwood trees.

I want Andy Serkis to get an Oscar. I also want Midnight in Paris to get a best picture nomination.

The best scene in Captain America was the first montage of how Captain America was used to sell war bonds.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTommy B

My fav' scene in The Help is the one where Aibileen is talking about her son's death :-(. Best-in-show is totes Viola Davis who should win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar .

My fav' scene in Rise of the Planet of the Apes is Caesar protects John Lithgow.

The best scene in X-Men: First Class is when Magneto moves the satellite. I want it to be nominated for many Oscars.

The best scene in Rise of the Planet of the Apes is when... but I already told that.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterdinasztie

I haven't seen The Help yet. (So behind!)

My favorite scene in Rise of Planet of the Apes is when Caesar says no.

My favorite scene in The Tree of Life is the startling montage of the children growing from small babies to the strapping young lads backed by that stunning score. I want it to be nominated for seven Oscars. (Picture, Director, Supporting Actor, Art Direction, Cinematography, Sound, and Visual Effects)

My favorite scene of The Godfather Part II (sorry to rub salt in that wound) is the opening when young Vito Corleone arrives at Ellis Island. The sepia tone glow, that Nino Rota score, and the promise of his better life in America lay before him.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDrew C

The best scene in Crazy Stupid Love is any where Marisa Tomei appears. The definite high point of that movie for me was her hook up with Steve Carell. I wish she had had more screentime in the rest of it, she just knocked it out of the park.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRJ

The Help isn't out yet where I am :(

My fav' scene in Rise of the Planet of the Apes is when Ceasar is first taken to the redwoods.

The best scene in Warrior is right at the end and I don't want to spoil it but I will say that I was in tears. I want it to be nominated for 8 Oscars (Lead Actor x2, Supporting Actor, Picture, Director, Cinematography, Editing, Sound Editing).

The best scene in Die Hard is "Now I have a machine gun. Ho ho ho".

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNick

My fav' scene in The Help is the one where Minnie makes Hillie eat, well you know. Best-in-show is totes between Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis, but I'd probably give it to Spencer.

My fav' scene in Rise of the Planet of the Apes is the beginning of the uprising in the ape "shelter", especially the punctuation given by Caesar towards the end.

The best scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is when Snape's memories are shared . I want it to be nominated for a ludicrous amount of Oscars.

The best scene in Tangled is when Rapunzel and Flyn watch the lanterns; cliched choice, but true .

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTim Luisi

The best scene in Win Win is the match where Giamatti reiterates "Whatever the fuck it takes!". I want it to be nominated for four Oscars (Picture, Directing, Screenplay and Lead Actor for Giamatti).

The best scene in Horrible Bosses is Charlie Day on coke singing "That's not my name".

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBen

My favorite scene in The Help is the one where Skeeter's mom tell her exactly what happened with Constantine. That whole sequence especially towards the end with Constantine packing and looking at height marks on her door KILLED ME. Best-in-show is totes Jessica Chastain even though it's REALLY Viola Davis or Octavia Spencer, but while I knew to expect great performances from the latter two, I was completely shocked by Chastain.

My favorite scene in Rise of the Planet of the Apes is when Draco uttered that utterly ridiculous line only for Caesar to shock the bejeezus out of everyone in AND out of the film by screaming NOOOO. Seriously, his yell reverberated into my bones. And I thought it was genius to put the audience in a silly mood with that cheesy line from Draco only for them to be pulled back violently by that Best Moment of the Film. Whiplash!

The best scene in Midnight in Paris is when Gil first meets Ernest Hemingway starting with some banter with the Fitzgeralds and ending with Gil utterly confused at what just occurred. I want it to be nominated for at least 5 Oscars (Picture, Director, Writing, etc.).

The best scene in Limitless is when Bradley Cooper's character fixes his dead-end life by undergoing a montage of changes (cleans apartment, gets a haircut, buys better clothes). I'm not sure about this one. I have to think about it more.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

Ryan T -- i always wonder about those "fix life montages" and Crazy Stupid Love had a lengthy one. Like... where do these characters find the money to overhaul their entire lives. I'd like a big overhaul, you know?

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNathaniel R

My fav' scene in The Help is the one where jessica Chastain shows her long beautiful leg fo the first time. Best-in-show is totes Jessica Chastain’s breakdown .

My fav' scene in Rise of the Planet of the Apes is when Caesar rides the horse so fiercely.

The best scene in [Tree of Life] is when Hunter McCracken and his brother cry together at the river. I want it to be nominated for every single eligible category to match Titanic and Ben-Hur Oscars and to be released via Criterion this year.

The best scene in [The Whistleblower] is when Rachel Weisz fights the fuck out with the other policeman in the bar.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMikhael

The Help isn't out here in Australia yet, and I'm planning on seeing Apes some time this week...

The best scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is a tie between Snape's memories and that incredible sequence immediately before it following the trio through the battlefield in the courtyard. The score is especially epic there, and I was quite literally holding my breath in the theatre. I want it to be nominated for more Oscars than it will be, so: Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor x2, Cinematography, Editing, Make-Up, Visual Effects, Art Direction and Adapted Screenplay.

The best scene in Hanna is either the English girl talking about how she'd like to be a lesbian (but not one of those fat ones) or the final showdown between Hanna and Marissa.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChris E

My fav' scene in Rise of the Planet of the Apes is: "NOOOOOOO!!"

And the expression on the Gorilla's face!

Gorgeous movie moment.

August 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKatieHall

Mikhael -- that brothers at the river scene killed me too.

Everyone --it's interesting ot me that so many people love the same moments in RotPotA and they're all big moments. does that mean the rest of the film, the non BIG moments are not rich with nuance or memorable idiiosyncracies or does that just mean Rupert Wyatt is great with big setpiece moments?

August 21, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNathaniel R

First to answer your "fix life montages" questions. I totally get what you mean, but at least in the case for Limitless all he really did was exactly just that... cut his hair, buy better clothes, cleans his apartment. Apart from being blessed at already looking like Bradley Cooper, he also "found" $800 (can't say anything more since it's spoilery) and the whole conceit of the film is a pill is giving him access to 100% of his brain so he's thinking clearly/motivated, etc.

Now regarding the smaller moments in RotPotA, I can't disagree that the big setpieces weren't magnificent. They are a huge part as to why a lot of people ultimately found themselves really liking the film. But really almost EVERY scene with Caesar, big or small, contributed to the film. The first time we see Caesar's bedroom, when Franco takes Caesar to see where he was born, the first conversation he has with the Circus Orangutan (who frankly stole the movie), "Caesar is home," etc.

August 21, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

The Best Scene in The Help is the one where Jessica Chastain is burying her baby in the box in the yard and you see all the other ones...just so heartbreaking and touching..that image hasn't quite left me. Best in Show was Jessica Chastain. She really brought her character to life and I really enjoyed all the other women and I hope Octavia Spencer gets better roles after this regardless of Oscars.

August 21, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLillie

Haven't seen The Help or that ape movie yet...

The best scene in Beginners is when... honestly, don't make me choose. It's all great. I want it to be nominated for 5 Oscars (about as many as I could hope for realistically).

The best scene in Red State is that sermon. Holy shit.

August 21, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBen

I haven't seen The Help...

My fav' scene in Rise of the Planet of the Apes is when orange ape says "ape are stupid". I love the orange ape.

The best scene in Rise of the planet of the apes is that. I want it to be nominated for 8 Oscars, picture, director (he deserves it), actor (a Oscar for Cesar, possible?), editing, sounds, visual, OST, cinematography.

The best scene in the number 23 is when the movie ends :D

August 21, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMiguel

Best scene in help is when Viola gives Hilly what for.

Best in show is Sissy Spacek (brilliant actress, hilarious here... reminded me a bit of Maggie Smith in Gosford ParK with her last scene being a big oscar moment potentially) followed closely by a radiant Viola Davis.
