I have to agree with the "no charisma" thing, at least for now. I mean, I think she's a good actress, and I definitely don't dislike her, but... There hasn't been anything to really spark my interest, either. I'm not saying she has no sense of humor in her personal life, of course, but the combined dourness of her roles and public appearances that I've seen is quite overwhelming (I know you had similar feelings about Rose Byrne, Nat, but I've always liked her, actually).

Williams is the type of actress who gets lost in a character and her character's world. She delivers seismic emotional shifts and psychological detail and makes it look effortless. Her charisma stems precisely from the fact that she doesn't give a shit whether you think she has charisma or not.
She's no Marilyn - no one could be - but nothing about her on- or off-screen persona suggests she would ever try to be. This is why the concept of her actually playing Marilyn is a little bit tantalising.
And that's a fabulous image.
I disagree to play Marilyn you need bags of it and on or off it she has zero,yeah she gets inside her characters liked her a lot in her 2 oscar nominated roles but she has not shown me she can pull this off with previous work,i did not note any inner star quality or outer star quality i fine her laura linney - lite in some things.
God was in a VERY good mood when he gave us this AMAZING creature!
I think Christina Hendricks would be a perfect Marilyn. Of all the actresses today, she's the one with more physical resemblance and she has a screen presence that comes closer to Monroe's than Michelle does. Also, she has Marilyn's sex appeal, which is very important to play the role.
Madam you're no Tilda.
I feel bad for her that Harvey The Giant insist on this pointless publicity narrative.
Michelle is NO Marilyn Monroe ... bad casting for looks ... hope acting will be better... I still don't see it!
I haven't realized until now that Michelle Williams is quite a polarizing actress...she, Tilda Swinton, and Nicole Kidman are my favorite actresses right now and all three of them share very similar character traits in that none of them really give a shit about how you view them outside of their film roles. All are pretty nonchalant or at the very least pretty mum in interviews, press junkets, etc...I guess what I like about Michelle (and the others) is that their focus is always on the work and not the banality of fitting a certain Hollywood standard. She isn't particularly warm and cuddly, but that doesn't bother me. I think we often judge actors and actresses based on their public perception and that oftentimes clouds the quality of their work (hello...did Sandra Bullock honestly win the Oscar because of her performance, or because she's a nice, bubbly girl?)...Nicole Kidman went through a stage where she tried to fit the box-office Hollywood girl type and it never really clicked for her. Thank god that I think she's slowly turning away from that.
Michelle sinks so deeply into her roles that it sometimes feels like she's not trying (my friend even calls her "boring" onscreen, which I totally disagree with). It's rare for someone to totally be immersed in a role that you forget they are acting. I think she should be commended for that and not chastised for the fact that she isn't your typical Hollywood dunce.
Im excited to see Michelle bring Marilyn to life, I think she could pull it off. Everyone keeps suggesting that Christina Hendricks would have been a better choice to play Marilyn because of her body type, but they are not the same size. Yes, MM was curvy, but she was still a tiny thing. Christina Hendricks is beautiful but way more voluptuous and taller than MM was. I'm not saying she couldn't pull it off, but their bodies are not the same.
As for this particular picture, it totally made me think of Tilda Swinton!
this picture is actually from a photoshoot during her promotion of blue valentine. but i can't find the name of the photographer anywhere online. rats. it was from the california magazine "angelenos" -- but they don't have a website that you can look through their archives on.

Goran and Aaron: I still sense that some people can't get beyond Williams's years on TV, that Dawson's Creek still puts an upper limit on what they can admire in her. This changed dramatically with Brokeback, but didn't go away completely. I found the reactions to Mila Kunis last year equally fascinating. A simple solution: watch less bad TV!
God, this woman does absolutely nothing for me. She's so annoyingly timid and awkward in interviews that I can't imagine what it would take to get her to pose like that.

Aaron - interesting that you compare Michelle to Tilda and Nicole. Those two are among my favorite actresses (esp. Tilda), whereas I've been lukewarm on Michelle so far.
I don't get why Dawson's Creek would be held against her, though. I haven't seen a single minute of it myself, but isn't it generally agreed upon that she was clearly the best actor there?
There's lots of Ms. Michelle Williams haters out there huh? I still surprise that people couldn't pass the point that she's cast as MM. They all judged her without even see the final product. I hope she's get the last laugh.
Some other stars might have the looks similar to MM however can they pull if off? Every one keep saying Hendricks is more like MM. Can she act? People here couldn't pass Williams in Dawson Creek. Please don't forget Hendricks is also a TV star.
Michelle Williams is an amazing actress that has way more performances than her two nominations that prove it, watch Wendy & Lucy and her two supporting roles in Synecdoche and I'm not there. Haven't seen Meek's Cutof yet. I think she'll be an awesome Marilyn, I hate when it seems so important for the actor to phisically look like the character. And Williams is becoming one of the best actresses of her generation, Ryan Gosling (aka Young Hercules, because appearing on a bad series DOESN'T MEAN A THING ON YOUR PERFORMING SKILLS) said that they are actors who started on series that have become very selective in their film choices.,I think he's totally right
On the other hand yes, Christina Hendricks CAN ACT. Any episode of that masterpiece called Mad Men testifies that. Are we crazy?? How can anybody compare Dawson's Creek to Mad Men?? Writing both series in the same sentence makes me feel dirty!

Don't feel dirty COAST. I never watch those Tv series, Mad men nor Dawson Creek (I first saw MW was from The Baxter). The reason why I says what I say. They both are TV actresses. So it is okay for Hendricks to cast as MM verses Ms. Williams?
Gorgeous photo - there's sort of a "Joan of Arc" vibe to to it, or maybe i'm responding to the "martyr" quality in the two films of hers I've seen, Wendy and Lucy and Brokeback. As much as I love Ledger's final scene in that film, the further I get from the film the more resonance William's performance has for me. And her perf was the only thing that made me sit through to the end of Wendy and Lucy. I know I need to catch up on Blue Valentine, etc; part of what I appreciate about her is that after she left TV she has been so choosy about her roles and not gone for the easy money.
Let me jump in the MICHELLE WILLIAMS IS AMAZING bandwagon. Lookswise, actingwise, everything. To me she can do no wrong. Thanks for sharing this magnificent photo, Nat!
