If I were a casting director:

I'd consider Chiwetel Ejiofor, Lynn Whitfield, and Kimberly Elise for every film. They're underappreciated and have so much more to show us if they get the right parts.

The women: Viola Davis, Cher (very under-appreciated as an actress, even thought she is an Oscar winner), and Patricia Clarkson, who needs a really big role.

The men: Bobby Cannavale, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and (I agree with Yaxley). James McAvoy.

December 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPam

Lots of remarkable talents already mentioned here (Olivia Williams! James McAvoy! Beth Grant!) but if I was going to throw 3 yet-to-be-mentioned names onto the list my first thoughts are Juliet Stevenson, Nic Hoult, and Andrew Scott.

December 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterScottC

So many names, but the first three that come to mind are Cicely Tyson, Angela Lansbury, and Amy Adams.

December 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJulian Stark

Christina Hendricks, Allison Janney, and Christine Ebersole.
Give these ladies LEAD roles not the bit parts they usually get in films.

and it's not just because I love Buffy... But I think the 3 of them are great at comedy and drama but just don't get the right parts or the right movies and when they do it's like if no one ever heard of them...

I'd consider Connie Britton (still in awe over how beautifully, messily REAL Tami Taylor is and always will be), Emily Blunt (for the type of juicy, uniquely full-bodied roles that Kate Winslet was getting (and taking) at her age), and Christina Hendricks (because she ought to be a constant prizewinner after five seasons of gorgeously insightful, devastantingly guarded actressing on Mad Men) for every film. They're underappreciated and have so much more to show us if they get the right parts.

I wish more people gave more projects to Matt Damon the actor, who can be very different from Matt Damon the movie star.

Angela Bassett, Kristin Scott Thomas, David Thewlis!

December 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

I second Blunt who would wipe the floor with Mulligan.

Adepero Oduye who was awesome in Pariah

Naomie Harris, Christina Hendricks.

Jeffrey Wright

Vera Farmiga.

December 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMelissa

Chiwetel Ejiofor, Cillian Murphy and Peter Sarsgaard.

December 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJasmine

Nicole Kidman (Obviously, no explanation is necessary) and James McAvoy (probably THE most underrated actor out there in my opinion)

December 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTom

Emily Blunt! of course!

Who already has a great career but has not become the fascinating leading lady she should have become after The Devil Wears Prada.

December 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterYavor

Linda Fiorentino, Mira Sorvino, Amy Madigan, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Lili Taylor. Please, they deserve roles that not just place them as stock characters but these actress are way talented and underappreciated than any new actresses out there.

December 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDaph

@Yavor: These are my thoughts exactly! It seemed like with some of her earlier films, especially Young Victoria, she was on a Winslet-esque track to becoming one those beautiful, in-demand young British thespians who moves between genres, "types," and accents with impeccable ease. She has every right to make her Five Year Engagements and Adjustment Bureaus but I'd really love to see her challenge herself more. I've heard some whisperings that she might be coming to Broadway soon, which will surely be exciting, but does she really need to play second fiddle to Tom Cruise in the next film where Tom Cruise plays the same character in a different action flick?

December 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMatthew

Delroy Lindo, Stellan Skarsgård and Ray Winstone.

Much love to those who mentioned Sally Hawkins, Olivia Williams, Lesley Manville, Campbell Scott, Juliet Stevenson, S. Epatha Merkerson, Jeffrey Wright and Max von Sydow.
