Friday, December 14, 2012 at 5:55PM JA from MNPP here - I don't want to speak for Nathaniel, but I can't imagine him having to do one of his patented "Yes No Maybe So" takes on this here first teaser for Pedro Almodovar's next flick, a comedy called I'm So Excited - as in The Pointer Sisters' big hit song, which we see some male flight attendants perform therein. I can't imagine Nat having to to a "Yes No Maybe So" since this is Almodovar, and it is always HELL YES with Almodovar.
So I will just present it unto you, in hopes it can maybe put a smile on your face on this dreary horrible day. And I will add this informational nugget - I stole pizza from a pizza party that The Pointer Sisters were having during a drag show I attended when I was in college in the late 90s, and that's all this song ever makes me think of. So thanks for the pizza, ladies!
[UPDATE: The comedy about a flight where passengers begin to reveal their secrets to one another when the plane runs into trouble will feature familar Pedro regulars Javier Cámara (Talk to Her), Lola Dueñas (Volver) Cecilia Roth (All About My Mother), Carmen Machi (Broken Embraces) and a lot of new blood. Actors doing just their second tour of duty for the great auteur including Paz Vega ("Amparo" in Talk to Her), José Luis Torrijo (a doctor in All About My Mother), Antonio de la Torre ("Paco" in Volver) and Blanca Suarez ("Norma" in The Skin I Live In). We will also see quite a few Pedro virgins, most of them male: Hugo Silva, Miguel Angel Silvestre, Raúl Arévalo, Willy Toledo, José María Yazpik, Carlos Areces, and the lone new actress Laya Martí. What's more, according to Fotogramas, the comedy will also feature Pedro's movie star darlings Penelope Cruz & Antonio Banderas though they don't appear in this 47 second look.]

This is likely to be my first Almodovar theatrical. He's truly one of the best who ever did it. I hope his dream of making an English language feature is realized with actresses over his preferred first choices of Streep and Winslet—they're very boring. And I'm pro-Winslet but not for Almodovar on his first attempt for a movie outside his native tongue.

I'm also a hell, yes. So my vote has no value at all. Almodóvar back to comedy? Hell, yes. Lola Dueñas doing comedy? Hell, yes. Javier Cámara? Hell, yes. Some male eye candy? Hell, yes. A hint of what may be another meaty role for Cecilia Roth? Hell, yes. It can't come soon enough, bring the popcorn!
The only thing I don't like is the English title, Los amantes pasajeros is so much better, even if the double meaning of pasajeros as passengers or temporary gets lost. Anyway, I 'm so excited!!

It has a double meaning. Roughly translated, It could either mean The Temporary Lovers or The Traveling Lovers.
Exactly! Pasajeros can be a noun meaning passenger or and adjective meaning something that is temporary. I'm afraid that "The Temporary Lovers Who Travel" wouldn't be quite catchy ;)
By the way, now that I got your attention: aren't you mad as hell with the Globes for snubbing Mad Men? I got shivers every time I think about it!

Lol Hugo Silva isn't the centered flight attendant: he's the guy sleeping. Raul Arevalo is the centered flight attendant.

Almodóvar is way better doing melodramas and thrillers. I am not that excited.
Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz appear in the first minutes of the film, in the Barajas Airport at Madrid. Their characters have an argument. That's all Pedro revealed about the cast inclusion of Penelope and Antonio.

I'm so glad in spanish the title still is Los Amantes Pasajeros which is poignant as every Almodovar title film is & also funny in the context of the movie given its second meaning but we should remember this is Almodovar first comedy since 1994 & The Temporary Lovers (the exact translation not 'the traveling lovers' it would be a grammatical mistake & the 2nd meaning joke would be lost) is a serious title in the vein of recent Almodovar's films so I found cool the title is "I'm So Excited'' it remembers me of the previous Almodovar's first person titled comedies so is a win win situation to me.
Man, this teaser makes me giggle like a retard... I can't help but keep replaying it... over and over

Before I watched this trailer, I read the great interview Nathaniel did with Alan Cumming, in which he comments on the increase of gay representation in media: "I don't always think that quantity means quality. Sometimes more gay characters on tv or whatever aren't necessarily positive things. There can be... I just think it's bad that certain characters reinforce stereotypes that allow the rest of the world to think in the same way about us. That's my worry."
The comment definitely colored my perception of the Almodovar trailer I was about to watch, in which three gay male flight attendants sashayed to comedic effect. I was suddenly torn between wanting to giggle at the cuteness of it, and wanting to roll my eyes at the stereotypical treatment.
Most stereotypes are, at the very least, part of the truth. They're not the opposite of truth. So long the film makers don't claim their representation to be the whole truth, what's wrong with it? It's just a sample.
