Help Me With My "Critics Choice" Ballot

Voting has begun for the BFCA's 'Critics Choice' prize and I thought I'd ask for your input as a memory jog. Though I do keep track of my favorite achievements in film during the year I always forget about the categories that I don't have in my own FiLM BiTCH prizes so I definitely need help with those.

I already asked for help on Twitter but for those of you who don't follow me there (what's wrong with you?) Please sound off here about your suggestions in the following categories:

BEST YOUNG ACTOR/ACTRESS (under 21)
BEST ACTION MOVIE

and the following are *new* categories this year

BEST ACTOR in a COMEDY
BEST ACTRESS in a COMEDY
BEST ACTOR in a ACTION FILM
BEST ACTRESS in an ACTION FILM
BEST SCI-FI/HORROR MOVIE

Make your FYC cases in the comment! Limit yourself to 3 choices in each category - that's all we get to put on the ballot (so difficult)

My biggest FYC would be Greta Gerwig in Damsels in Distress for comedy actress

Young Actor - Logan Lerman (Perks)
Action Movie - Looper
Sci Fi - Promethus

December 4, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMatt

These are my options? I don't believe I've seen a single comedy released this year unless you count the horrible and someday will be funny to most Looper?

December 4, 2012 | Unregistered Commenter3rtful

Young Actor/Actress - Please tell me Miss Wallis takes your top slot! Beyond her, Logan Lerman is technically young enough (I think). The kid from Looper was pretty good too.

Action Movie - Looper, The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, Haywire, Skyfall... lots of choices

Comedy Actor - Channing for 21 Jump Street... yeesh, and that's all that comes to mind

Comedy Actress - Bachelorette and Pitch Perfect should give you enough options

Action Actor - See my Action Movie picks

Action Actress - The girl from Haywire, Scarlet in The Avengers and best of all, soon-to-be-Oscared Catwoman

Best Sci Fi/Horror - OK Looper goes here actually. Cabin in the Woods and Cloud Atlas are great picks too.

Keep in mind...

Best Young Actor:
Jared Gilman or Kara Hayward for Moonrise Kingdom
and
Logan Lerman or Ezra Miller for The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Best Action Movie:
Haywire (since all of my favorite action films from this year, excluding Skyfall, are firstly science fiction films - plus, I didn't see The Raid: Redemption)

Best Actor in a Comedy:
Sam Rockwell for Seven Psychopaths

Best Actress in a Comedy:
(Isn't it wrong that next to nothing besides) Jennifer Lawrence for Silver Linings Playbook (is coming to me?)

and
Mark Ruffalo for The Avengers

Best Actress in an Action Film:

Best Action Actress (or is it a Comedy?)

SALMA HAYEK in Savages!!!!!!!!!!!

December 4, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterFernando Moss

I want to suggest Steve Carell and Keira Knightley for Best Comedy Actor/Actress in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, but your list of 2012 Reviewed Films tells me you haven't seen it! It's a far from perfect, but very interesting film. Everyone should give it a try.

December 4, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJS

Welp. This was helpful for me to figure out all the things I missed I guess. I don't know how helpful it will be for you Nathaniel, but here's what I've got.

BEST YOUNG ACTOR/ACTRESS (under 21)
1. Quevanzhane Wallis would seem like the obvious one, but is she eligible?
2. Jared Gilman for Moonrise Kingdom
3. Katy Hayward for Moonrise Kingdom

Of the movies I haven't been able to see yet, I've heard great things about Tom Holland in The Impossible, and both Logan Lerman and Ezra Miller in Perks Of Being a Wallflower are under 21.

Best Action Movie
1. The Avengers, which was good, but it is the only maybe action movie I saw this year.

Skyfall comes to mind first for the rest of the unseen field though. With Looper and Haywire being the other two I was disappointed to miss. Maybe Savages would work here?

BEST ACTOR in a COMEDY
1. Bradley Cooper in Silver Linings Playbook. I was very surprised at how much I liked him in this.
2. Andy Samburg for Celeste And Jesse Forever. Another pleasant surprise for me.
3. I'd say Bruce Willis or Bill Murray for Moonrise Kingdom, but are they leads?

Jack Black for Bernie seems possible of the things I haven't seen. And depending how you categorize The Sessions, maybe John Hawkes would work here as well. Maybe the Hope Springs fellows?

BEST ACTRESS in a COMEDY
1. Rashida Jones for Celeste And Jesse Forever. No question. It's so frustrating that this movie was seen by so few people because when a performer ARRIVES like this, you want them to be greeted with the kind of fanfare a performance like this warrants. This was a Holly Hunter in Broadcast News "Moment" with a capital M. And nobody saw it.
2. Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook
3.

I think the ladies from Bachelorette are the obvious ones here that I haven't seen. Again maybe The Sessions would work for this category. Maybe Meryl for Hope Springs? Maybe Emma Watson for Perks?

BEST ACTOR in a ACTION FILM
1. Mark Ruffalo for The Avengers

From what I haven't seen, maybe Joseph Gordon Levitt for Looper.

BEST ACTRESS in an ACTION FILM
1. Scarlett Johanssen for The Avengers
2. Jennifer Lawrence for The Hunger Games
3. Noomi Rapace for Prometheus

And that's all folks. I've heard great things about Gina Carano in Haywire though.

BEST SCI-FI/HORROR MOVIE
1. Prometheus, which really grew on me since I saw it.

Looper would fit here too, though I missed it in theaters.

December 4, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTB

Best Action Film: The Dark Knight Rises
Best Sci-Fi/Horror Film: Looper
Best Actor in a Comedy: Jason Segel, Jeff Who Lives at Home
Best Actress in a Comedy: Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Linings Playbook / Rashida Jones, Celeste and Jesse Forever
Best Actor in an Action Film: Michael Fassbender, Prometheus (if that counts) / Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Looper)
Best Actress in an Action Film: Anne Hathaway, The Dark Knight Rises / Jennifer Lawrence, The Hunger Games

December 4, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTaylor

Actor/Actress under 21:
Logan Lerman-Perks
Quvenzhane Wallis (obviously)
Either of the Moonrise Kingdom Kids (or both?)

Actor in a Comedy:
Channing Tatum in either Magic Mike or 21 Jump Street
Sam Rockwell in Seven Psychopaths

Actor in an Action Film:
Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man (sure, the movie was awful, but he was awfully charismatic)
Chris Evans in the Avengers (he does most of the heavy lifting in that movie, with little thanks)

Actress in an Action Film
Emma Stone in Spider-Man (same argument as for Andy G)
Elizabeth Banks in The Hunger Games (am I the only one who's disappointed that she's not in the Supporting Actress discussion?)
Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games (because *she'll know* if we don't vote for her)

Sci-Fi/Horror:
Cabin in the Woods
Cloud Atlas
Chronicle (Why aren't more people talking about this one?)

December 4, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJoe K

I'll echo the Fassbender/Dench/Blunt/McConaughey/Lawrence/Hathaway love from my fellow commenters and add a few others for your consideration!

Action-wise: Liam Neeson in The Grey. This felt very him- I think he suits these serious outdoorsy roles. I really liked him in Seraphim Falls a few years ago as well. I have him cast in my imaginary Viking film. My other one would be Guy Pearce in Lockout. So fun! If only the film had been up to his standards. And, does Savages count as an action film? If so, Salma Hayek goes at the top of my list! I loved her in this.

And for comedy I'd just add Seann William Scott in Goon. This might be one of my favourite performances of the year. It really surprised me! There's a scene in it where he threatens someone and there was such menace that he shot to the top of my out-of-the-box villain casting list. I hope he does more work like this.

best actress in a comedy? Babs. Duh.

December 5, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterthe boyfriend

BEST YOUNG ACTOR/ACTRESS (under 21)
Shannon Beer and Soloman Glave in "Wuthering Heights"
Fenessa Pineda & Venecia Troncoso in "Mosquita y Mari" (if they qualify, I'm not sure of their ages)

BEST ACTION MOVIE
"Killing Them Softly"
"The Dark Knight Rises"
"End of Watch"

BEST ACTOR in a COMEDY
Logan Lerman in "Perks of Being a Wallflower" (best thing in it, for sure)
Chris Messina in "Ruby Sparks" (supporting role, but comedy actors seem quite thin this year)
Alex Ross Perry in "The Color Wheel" (just 'cause)

BEST ACTRESS in a COMEDY
Leslie Mann in "This is 40" (she was the best thing about it)
Anna Kendrick in "Pitch Perfect" (her barely concealed contempt for the material is actually spot on for the role)
Kirsten Dunst in "Bachelorette" (so icy and she does fake nice so well)

BEST ACTOR in a ACTION FILM
Scoot McNairy in "Killing Them Softly" (perhaps by #1 male performance of the year)
Dane DeHaan in "Chronicle" (because he was actually quite good, yeah?)
Andrew Garfield in "The Amazing Spider-Man" (because he was great even if the film around him was mediocre)

BEST ACTRESS in an ACTION FILM
Emma Stone in "The Amazing Spider-Man" (see above)
Judi Dench in "Skyfall" (etc)
America Ferrara for "End of Watch" (I thought she gave the minimal role some fine gravitas)

BEST SCI-FI/HORROR MOVIE
"The Innkeepers"
"Prometheus"
"Frankenweenie"/ "Paranorman" (child-friendly, but horror nonetheless)

Young Actor/Young Actress
Snowtown - Lucas Pittaway
He's 20 and he delivers an amazing performance in an incredible film also is the kind of young performance never gets recognized, too mature for being in a young category, too unknown to be with the grown ups

Action Movie
End of Watch - Indie films need support, not only big budget action flicks
Looper
The Avengers

Actor - Comedy
Intouchables - François Cluzet & Omar Sy (if this were an american film they would be locks as lead & supporting)

Michael Fassbender in Prometheus - he's the male cate blanchett, he's a God even when a film sucks

Actress - Action
The Dark Knight Rises - Anne Hathaway
Snow White and the Huntsman - Charlize Theron
Haywire - That Lady…

Sci-Fi / Horror Movie
Safety Not Guaranteed ( the most unexpected, funny awesome sci-fi film of the year )
Extraterrestrial by Nacho Vigalondo (you guys should use your power to recognize films out of the box, not only big Hollywood blockbusters)
The Cabin in the Woods

It's great what are you trying to do but you should stop this madness before you become ''the people's satellite blockbuster academy of science fiction fantasy & horror we're like the golden globes and some day were gonna nominate the tourist critics choice awards''

Does Cloud Atlas count as an "action film"? Then I nominate Ben Whishaw.

December 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSan FranCinema

I'd like to second most of Luke W's choices.

The category that exasperates me most in groups that choose best actresses in comedy is that they don't seem to look very hard or appreciate what is there.

Best Actress in a Comedy:
Zoe Kazan, "Ruby Sparks"
Julie Delpy, "Two Days in New York"
Rashida Jones, "Celeste and Jesse Forever"
Greta Gerwig, "Damsels in Distress"

Best Actor in a Comedy:
Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, "21Jump Street"

Best Young Actor:
Kara Hayward and Jared Gilman in "Moonrise Kingdom"

Best Actress in an action (?) movie:
Jessica Chastain in "Zero Dark Thirty"

Best Actor in an Action Movie:
Christoph Waltz in "Django Unchained"

And some questions:
Would Holy Motors fit in the sci-fi, fantasy category?
Is Hello, I Must Be Going a comedy?
Is The Impossible an action film?

FYC- Young Actress
Kara Hayward, Moonrise Kingdom

Honestly, she and Marion Cotillard are the frontunners on my personal Best Actress of the year, in any genre, ballot. Suzy Bishop is an extraordinarily well-rounded and emotive creation.

FYC- Comedy Actress
Aubrey Plaza, Safety Not Guaranteed

I wasn't too big a fan of the film, and Plaza doesn't vary much from her usual style in the performance, but really come on, the deadpan charms of April Ludgate, they're killer.

FYC- Comedy Actor
Bradley Cooper, Silver Linings Playbook

He's genius in the role! Better than Lawrence in the film even, very powerful.

FYC- Action Actress
Charlize Theron, Snow White and the Huntsman

I mean come on, SO MUCH BADASS. Ravenna kills it dead.

FYC- Action Actor
Javier Bardem, Skyfall

Do supporting performances count in those categories Nathaniel? At any rate, he does diabolical gay villainy with the best of them, so wonderful. Puts a smile to any angry young gay man's face.

BEST YOUNG ACTOR/ACTRESS
FYC - Jared Gilmore AND Kara Heyward, Moonrise Kingdom. This dual performance anchors the movie in something real. Surprisingly real, given that this story of young love is the first big movie role for both of these talented youngsters. Yes, the adult character actors steal the show, but they wouldn't have anything to steal if these two weren't SO GOOD. And I firmly believe that one of these performances wouldn't exist without the other. A perfect symbiotic relationship.

BEST ACTION MOVIE
FYC - Cloud Atlas. Only two of its six stories are sci-fi, and it really rests on the action setpieces, so I would put this here instead of in Sci-Fi. It may not be as strong as the sum of its parts, but its still the most audacious, ambitious, exciting film I've seen all year. And it contains some of the most thrilling sequences seen on a big screen since Avatar, easily.

BEST ACTOR in a COMEDY
FYC - Josh Brolin in Men In Black 3. Yes, the film was a mess. But his performance as young Tommy Lee Jones is so perfectly, hilariously, accurate that he deserves some recognition. Best impersonation of the year (sorry, Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Looper!).

BEST ACTRESS in a COMEDY
FYC - Ellen DeGeneres in Finding Nemo 3D. What!?! It was released this year! And it's easily one of the best voiceover performances of all time!
FYC - Olivia Munn in Magic Mike. For being so effortlessly sexy, so naturalistically easy-going, and so easily, sneakily funny.

BEST ACTOR in a ACTION FILM
FYC - Mark Ruffalo in The Avengers. For proving that the third time's the charm for this character. And for, somehow, keeping this often very silly movie grounded.

BEST ACTRESS in an ACTION FILM
FYC - Elizabeth Banks in The Hunger Games. Let's be honest. Who knew she had THAT in her? It was just the makeup and ridiculous costumes that transformed her. She BECAME Effie Trinket on every level. She deserves far more credit than she's gotten.
