I finally saw Poetry and my little heart couldn't take it, TEARS EVERYWHERE I NEED TO WASH MY PILLOWCASES NOW. Next I'm seeing War Horse because ugh. I gotta. Academy Award Nominee for Best Picture and all.
I finally saw The Artist and I absolutely loved it! It's such a relief to agree with this year's front runner, since it doesn't happen very often. Next I'm begrudgingly seeing Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close because it's the only Best Pic nominee I haven't seen. I hope to be pleasantly surprised...
I finally saw A Star is Born (1954) and now I have to be angry about one more past Oscar injustice. Poor Judy.
Next I'm seeing Mysteries of Lisbon because I've heard great things but holy cow is my ass going to be asleep after that four hour runtime.
I finally saw some episodes of "Downton Abbey" after everyone has raved and raved and I can't help but agree 100%: that shiz is GREAT (although I don't think Maggie Smith is best in show like most seem to). Next I'm seeing A SEPARATION because I've been dying to see it at Film Forum for weeks and people keep flaking on me, so I'll have to go it alone.
I finally saw The Artist and The Descendants.
Next I am going to see A Separation, because Nathaniel's #1 movie of the year is FINALLY coming to the DFW area!
I finally saw Miss Bala and I have to say that I was terribly disappointed. Sigman was good, but the direction, with super dark lighting and "natural" shots from actors' backs, was just not doing it for me.
Next, I'm seeing Declaration of War because it looks so colorful and moody (in a good way).
I finally saw The Ghost Writer and I really enjoyed it. Sooo pretty- that house! And omg Olivia Williams! And Pierce Brosnan making that speech at the gate- hilarious! And the score! And that perfect punchline of an ending!
Next I'm seeing The Grey because Liam Neeson plus wolves plus people from Rubicon plus it actually got some good recommendations (it had me at Liam Neeson, really).
I finally saw The Iron Lady and though the movie is not that great Meryl Streep is magnificent in it (twice).
Next I'm seeing is Albert Nobbs because I don't wanna miss any of the Best Actress performance before Oscar night!
I finally saw that Lana Del Ray "performance" of Video Games on SNL everyone's been on about and OMG was it horrible. I love the song on the radio but this was just a bad performance on every level.
Next I'm seeing Archipelago because my friend Kendra sent me a DVD of it and really recommends it, it's got Tom Hiddleston as the protagonist, and is about depression. It's from 2010 but it seems like the theme of depression is being explored more in films lately or is it just me? (Melancholia, Bridesmaids, etc.) Since I suffered from it last year, and it's one of those things that "we agree not to talk about", I'm glad to see it coming out in the open in a more mainstream way.
I finally saw The Descendants and I think it's awful in every possible way! Next I'm seeing anything because it's impossible that it's not going to top that...
I finally saw Moneyball, and it really was one of the best American films made last year. I didn't like Bennett Miller's 'Capote' AT ALL, and a sports film was something I had no interest in, but they managed to make it as all-encompassing and universal as any other great piece of storytelling.
Pitt's star turn was just as good as Fassbender or Gosling this year, with a vulnerability I found refreshing and, honestly? Relatively shocking. I never thought I could buy Pitt as being anything other than a fantastic genre actor (didn't buy him in Babel, thought he was fair in Button, GLORIOUS in Basterds) but there was this underlying sense of panic that he kept trying to quell by speaking rapidly and thinking rapidly, always trying to outpace his doubt, always driving forward; I haven't seen an actor take something as large as the idea of 'FAILURE', physicalize that, and spend the entire film running away from it.
It felt like a performance Paul Newman would have given in the 70's, (a great compliment) but all the more illuminating in that I felt and saw this wonderful movie star bleed onscreen,
and in the process, without even realizing it,
I started thinking less and less of him as a celebrity,
and by the end the Pitt I knew, or thought I knew, was gone; was replaced by this guy, who just happened to be one of America's best male actors.
Next I'm seeing Beginners because somehow I missed it, when it was always right up my alley.
OR
Next I'm seeing The Woman In Black because Radcliffe has to get out under this Harry Potter shadow. And based on what I saw of him in 'Equus', I firmly believe he can.
I finally saw ...The Artist....and ....I didn't like it that much......next I'm seeing......Shame....because.....of dah FassMember.
I finally saw Avatar, and it was beautiful but boring, and next I'm seeing The Grey because I'm a sucker for a good survival flick.
I finally saw The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and though I loved the movie and 3 hours never went by so fast, I realized that going to the movies is becoming unbearable due to all the chatter next to me.
Next I'm seeing We Need to Talk About Kevin because it's in a movie theater next to me.
And I just said "next to me" twice. Sorry about that.
I finally saw Beginners, and I am even more in love with Ewan McGregor now (if that were possible). Next I'm seeing The Descendants or Midnight in Paris because they're the only two Best Picture nominees I haven't seen yet and I simply MUST be informed on Oscar night!
I finally saw Leon and god Natalie Portman's performance gave me the chills, and like how someone said on Tumblr, Mathilda could have very well grown up to be Rooney Mara's Lisbeth.
Next I'm seeing all the episodes of Spaced because I need more Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in my life.
I finally shaw "The Idles March" & (to my surprise!) I tough it was really UNDERRATED (Excellent script, directing & acting + REALLY entertaining).
Next I am gonna see "Albert Nobbs" because I've been waiting since FOREVER to come to my town & GLENN CLOSE (need I say MORE?)
"I finally saw Take Shelter and I loved it, even the ending, and I loved Shannon and Chastain . Next I'm seeing Miss Bala because I don't have anything better to do."
I saw "A Better Life" and Demian Bichir was really great. Leave him in the race, take out Clooney and add either Fassbender or Shannon and you'd have a great Best Actor competition. The movie itself, while predictable, was also pretty moving.
I ALSO saw "Pina" and loved it. I don't normally like 3-D but this was just such a unique experience and totally expanded my idea of what dance AND documentaries can be.
I ALSO ALSO finally saw "Hugo" and liked it. Didn't love it, but it's pretty good, if too long (like a lot of Scorsese's recent films). It was beautiful and Kingsley was great (replace Hill with Kingsley or Pitt from "Tree of Life" and Supporting Actor would be much better).
I plan on seeing Warrior, Margin Call, A Separation, Albert Nobbs, War Horse and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close in the next month because, you know, Oscars.
I finally saw that Spielberg movie that should be entitled "Extremely Long and Incredibly Kitschy" (the one about the horse) and "A Dangerous Method."
Next, I'm seeing "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" and "Hugo" because...they got BP nominations, so I feel I have to.
I finally saw The Descendants and was surprised at how technically weak it was. I mean, I'd heard the script and such might not be up to usual Payne standards, but the cinematography was just so simple (I swear only about a quarter of the frame was ever used at one time, except for those postcard shots advertising Hawaii) and the editing was bizarre. Shailene Woodley was a firecracker before they short-changed her character though.
Next I'm seeing Young Adult because it finally opens here this Friday! Charlize Theron is one of my favourite people in the world and her character looks like my kinda gal.
I finally saw Hugo and I was underwhelmed by the boy, thought he was pretty bad and the movie was overlong but I still enjoyed it and really, really want to go to Paris soon! And also finally saw A Better Life and thought Bichir was excellent and the movie was much more interesting than I thought it would be. But then again, I've always liked Chris Weitz, ever since Chuck and Buck.
Next I'm seeing Big Miracle because whales! And the commercial makes me cry but the fact that "miracle" is in the title makes me think the whales all survive and, honestly, I need a break from the Oscar season. Whales!
I finally saw The Grey and Pina. Next I'm seeing Albert Nobbs because I'm a Best Actress completest and don't want to subject myself to The Iron Lady yet.
I finally saw "Peggy Sue Got Married" and Kathleen Turner should have made a million more movies between 1980 and 1995.
I finally saw Drive and, while I thought the score and cinematography were stunning, I was enormously underwhelmed by the movie as a whole, and for the life of me I can't figure out why Albert Brooks got so much buzz for this performance.
Next I'm seeing 50/50 because I was too poor to see it while it was in theaters, and I've heard nothing but good things.
I finally saw A Dangerous Method and Viggo was robbed of an Oscar nomination. Also, impressed that Keira really went there with the jaw jutting. That must've hurt afterwards.
As for the next film... Are You There God? It's Me, and I Need to See Margaret. (Though I'll probably have to wait for months until that happens.)
Saw two movies based on a play: Carnage and A Dangerous Method. Disappointed by BOTH of them, especially by Cronenberg's movie. I like the last scene a lot, but that's about it. Maybe I still miss the Cronenberg of Dead Ringers, the Fly, Naked Lunch, History of Violence.....*sigh*
Was going to see "We Need to Talk about Kevin", but it's still not playing here:(
So might have to settle for something else, and for some reason, I want to see Haywire, and if not, then Young Adult (if it's still playing)...
I finally saw "A Separation" and was floored by the heartrending complexity of human foibles it depicted. Next I'm seeing "Margaret" because I'm curious about it and a cute boy asked me.
I finally saw The Iron Lady and I was wowed by Meryl Streep's capital P Performance and wowed that the film had so much directorial vision that all amounted to nothing. I ALSO finally saw The Big Sleep and it has encouraged me to dive more into Lauren Bacall's' career. Next I'm going to see Albert Nobbs on my never-ending quest to see all of the nominees.
I finally saw 50/50 and loved it beyond all measure. Next I'm seeing Drive again because it's so damn good.
I finally saw "I Am Love", with Tilda Swinton, because I'm in the middle of my own Tilda marathon. Boy, does she look fantastic in the beginning of that film--I almost thought she was Cate Blanchett. At the end, her look returns to the odd, short-haired Tilda-ness. Good film, though. And then I sneaked off to a matinee of "The Iron Lady", joining two old ladies and two old men. I, unlike most audiences, enjoyed the film. If Meryl Streep doesn't win an Oscar for that performance, then what is the Academy all about, really?
Next up this weekend is "The Artist" because I adore movies about movies, and I really love "Singing in the Rain" and the 1937 "A Star is Born".
I finally saw The Descendants (it made my friend cry, I guess I am harder hearted), Bridesmaids (slighter and sadder than I expected), and The Guard (by far the funniest of the 3, I wanted to say fooking as every third word after that).
Next I'm seeing Henry's Crime, as I feel in the mood for movies with a bit of comedy in them, after seeing a number of sad ones.
I finally saw War Horse, and really found Jeremy Irvine hard to take. I suppose it's not all his fault and Spielberg directed him to be that way - all doe eyed and earnest - and I suppose it's meant to fit in with the old timey scheme of the film in general, but I thought he was just a total blank stare in search of a character, and found him more or less unbearable. Things improved dramatically once he was gone, and deteriorated rapidly once he was reunited with the horse at the end. In general I thought the film demonstrated a fair amount of ring rust on Spielberg's part. It's a good tune up for Lincoln, and still has many admirable moments, but that's about it.
I finally ALSO saw The Grey, which should have left off its credits-closing sting, and reaches a little too self consciously for "Important Movie" status, but is none the less a totally gripping survival tale anchored by Liam Nesson's best performance in many, many years.
Next I'm seeing SATA-MUTHAEFFIN'-TANGO at Lincoln Center.
I finally saw M and now I need recommendations on more Peter Lorre pics (besides the obvious). Next I'm seeing California Suite because somehow I missed the Dowager Countess winning Oscar #2 up until now.
I finally saw "The Lion in Winter" and "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner." Next I'm seeing/rewatching "On Golden Pond," because I really would like to understand why Katharine Hepburn won those 3 extra Oscars.
Unimpressed with the first two.
I finally saw Children Of A Lesser God and thought Marlee Matlin was awesome in it. Next I'm seeing Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf because I've heard that Elizabeth Taylor's performance in it is amazing, and I've been on a bit of an Oscar kick lately lol :)
James, check out Arsenic And Old Lace. Really good movie that has Cary Grant and Peter Lorre in it.
"I finally saw Key Largo and really thought it was terrific, Claire Trevor was heartbreaking, completely deserving of her Oscar. Next I'm seeing Lolita because I've been meaning too for years but was always a little creeped out by the concept but James Mason and Shelley Winters should smooth the way hopefully."
I finally saw Albert Nobbs and quite enjoyed it, particularly Glenn Close and Janet McTeer. Next I'm seeing The Grey because I've heard surprisingly terrific things about it.
Meghan -- you've heard correctly. It's for the all time lists!
Julian -- i guess i need to do that too. people keep talking bout it
roark -- i agree on the rust and on the Irvine. good calls.
I finally saw the Finch's Tattoo and I quite enjoyed it. Mara was phenomenal. Next I'm seeing my psychotherapist because the androgyny turned me the hell on.
