Movie|Line Tom Cruise is the latest star being talked up to play opposite Beyoncé in the A Star is Born. If it weren't a Clint Eastwood picture I'd assume this movie was never happening but since it's a Clint Eastwood picture some male star is eventually going to bite before Blue Ivy is old enough to take the role from Mama.

And I kept forgetting to post the Genie Award winners but Awards Daily did that duty. Here's Viggo Mortensen accepting Best Supporting Actor for A Dangerous Method. Good pick, Genie. He was great in that movie. Not that greatness is surprising these days from Viggo.

If he finally gets cast in the Ridley Scott project, Bardem will be adding one villain after another to his resume. Don't directors or casting directors remember him in Before Night Falls? They only remember Chigurh?
And please, let that blond wig happen only in a scene or two, as one of those stupidly obvious disguises that can only happen in movies. Though bad hair has given him some good moments in the past.
The Star is Born remake is a bad idea from start to finish. It's not that I'm against remakes, the original Star was a reworking of What Price Hollywood? after all but each had a new take on it in some way and a magnetic star at its center.
Beyonce is a fine singer but I've never seen anything that shows she can do the heavy lifting required by Esther Blodgett/Vicki Lester. Even the Streisand version which I thought was dreadful and made the main character a bit of a bitch was driven by Barbra's megawatt persona.
Tom Cruise...really?! I can picture him as a once giant movie star on the skids, it might be even a little too on the nose but again the part requires James Mason/Fredric March level acting talent to carry it off which Cruise does not possess. If it has to happen Norman should be played by Daniel Day Lewis or if they were going to go the live fast die young route Ryan Gosling although that might be a stretch.
Lastly as a director Clint Eastwood seems to direct the slowest moving films at the fastest pace I can recall. I haven't disliked all his films but his specialty seems to be westerns not, excepting The Bridges of Madison County, personal dramas.
Bardem's hair sure made me recoil in horror so maybe that's a good thing for a Bond Villain.
