Misleading Headline Of the Week!
Saw this on my google reader feed via Coming Soon yesterday and giggled.
It's technically true but if it were literally true -- Julianne Moore AS Carrie - I'd have to rethink my preemptory distaste for the movie. Dear god (aka Julianne), I'd have to quit scoffing altogether! I'm suddenly picturing a completely different completely unfaithful reimagined Carrie in which a shy 51 year old fire-haired virgin goes telekinetically mental on her town. What would prompt it? And which 70something actress could play Julianne's crazy bible-thumping mother?
Though it seems patently ridiculous to imagine a better Margaret White performance than the one Piper Laurie took to an Oscar nomination in the Seventies, Moore is no slouch when it comes to maternal mania. I am therefore, forced to be intrigued a tiny bit. If Julianne takes the role that is...
Will she or won't she? Should she?

Susan Sarandon as Julianne's mom, maybe? Not quite right on the ages, but it'd be fun.
Hate to say it, but if Julianne's in, so am I.
She shouldn't but she will.
Unless she does a different take on the role (as Hathaway is supposed to do in TDKR, but we'll have to see about that) she will just be playing the role exactly like it was written in 76' and she may come close to being as good as Piper Laurie, but it will be more like "close but no cigar".
I just have to say, I just finished watching The Kids Are All Right for the first time since its Oscar run. And it's even better than I remember. Amazing. Julianne is PERFECT in it.
Jane Fonda or Maggie Smith.
I'd pay good money to see this imaginary aged-up version of Carrie. I don't know why, but Maggie Smith popped into my head too. I haven't seen many of her films so that's really weird. Grace Zabriskie is a great character actress who does a lot of creepy work and she'd be great. And if Sissy Spacek were a decade older it would be really interesting to see her play that part.
Also: Faye Dunaway. It'd be like Mommie Dearest + Demons.
She really needs a great, high-profile role in an attention-grabbing film that'll get a lot of people talking (aside from Game Change, which I honestly forgot even happened)... I just wish it didn't necessarily have to be this role. I feel as if she's been falling further and further off the radar after that one-two punch in 2002. It's been an entire decade since those double barrel nominations and it's a little hard to believe that, within that timeframe, Reese, Sandra, and Natalie all won Oscars, Hilary picked up a second, and Julianne not only hasn't gotten that long-deserved golden boy but hasn't even been nominated again. What gives? The problem with the Margaret White role is that if she's great, she's great (although I can't imagine that she'll get any Oscar traction from it) and if she's...not, then the discussion will be completely centered around why she (and Pierce) even bothered in the first place. Julianne is about as damn near to perfection as it gets and she shouldn't have to be revamping secondhand roles that aren't in need of revamping in the first place.
I'm sure she'll take it. I think she works better in low-key projects but a good paycheck is hard to resist. I would prefer Turner, Huston or Bening in that role.
I wish Paul Thomas Anderson would have another role for her - her two best performances are in Boogie Nights and Magnolia IMO.
Michelle Pfeiffer...
