Slant Gravity, IMAX, and the horrors of front row seating
The Guardian a Carrie promotion stunt here in NYC. Imagine seeing this in real life.
The Verge the original teaser trailer to Star Wars is curiously light on Han Solo
Variety Destin Cretton, hot off the empathetic and special Short Term 12 may direct Glass Castle based on the bestseller with Jennifer Lawrence in the starring role
Deejay Italia Cher on Italian television calls Madonna a "magic bitch"

My New Plaid Pants Bubble Boy and Prisoners? Twins!
Boy Culture Josh Hutcherson is "mostly" straight
CHUD undeterred by those Prometheus reviews, Ridley Scott is moving ahead with Blade Runner 2 and may bring Harrison Ford along with him
/Film Darren Aronofsky promises huge complicated visual effects for his biblical epic Noah ... does that mean Matthew Libatique can finally win a cinematography Oscar? (that question is inspired by this recent divisive post on Gravity)
/Variety Toni Collette romantic comedy Lucky Them gets a distributor. This is how massive the TIFF selection  is each year. I did not even know that Toni, one of my very favorite actors, even had a movie playing there!

Finally, /Film shares the shortlists for the new Fantastic Four cast. The weird thing is that though I like nearly every actor and actress mentioned I think most of them are pretty terrible choices for those roles. Except for maybe Margo Robbie as Sue Storm. Interesting that her career is suddenly hot after a failed tv show (Pan Am). It's gotta be buzz about her sexcapades in The Wolf of Wall Street, right? I think my problem in picturing a successful Fantastic Four movie is that that comic book property has, like Wonder Woman, a retro feel. I don't mean that as a bad thing but Hollywood definitely does and they're always worry about how to young down that type of property. But that doesn't work. Some things are just "square" you know, to use an antiquated term. They need to think more along the lines of that bang-up job Marvel did interpreting Captain America for the 21st century by rooting him first so boldly in the early 20th century where he feels so natural.

I definitely have to agree with you on the people shortlisted for the new Fantastic Four. Margot Robbie would make a decent Sue Storm - anyone would be better than Jessica Alba - but the contenders for Reed Richards are WAY too young, Ronan would be better suited for Star Wars and Kate Mara is just completely wrong. Having never read a Fantastic Four comic book (like most superheroes, I first became a fan through the cartoon), I can't completely comment on the tone but I'd imagine you're quite right about the retro feel. It's unlikely that FOX will go that route but they just ordered a massive overhaul of the script, so perhaps not all hope is lost.

As for the original teaser trailer for Star Wars, it's very much a relic of its time but certainly interesting to watch. I find it curious that they would post it so randomly, however, which makes me think there may be a major announcement about Episode VII on the horizon. I could just be over thinking it, though.

A whole year and a half in advance and I'm willing to bet you that your Oscar prediction for Noah's cinematography will come true. Following your post from yesterday, it's easy to see how prestige picture from Oscar nominated director with heavy special effects and showy visual fits RIGHT into that pattern.

Josh is so cute. Has it already been dissected that Grace of Monaco is getting dumped in January 2014? Nicole may be over but she had a good run.

Grace is actually set for March here in the States, not January.

OT: Are you or will you watch American Horror Story: Coven? I'm a fellow actressexual and my heart can't take the beautiful trinity that is Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett, and then you add Sarah Paulson, Frances Conroy and Gabourey Sidibe in the mix for extra flavor. It has Nepotism Roberts, so I suppose you can't win them all. But still, Bassett, Bates and Lange!

Much as I like Darren Aronofsky, I just have such a hard time imagining any scenario where I would enjoy a Noah's arc movie. Sigh.

There's a new American Hustle trailer by the way. It still looks awesome.

I'm sorry, I can't get past the fact that the ONLY choice for the Human Torch is Michael B. Jordan and yet not one of the choices for Sue is black. THEY ARE SIBLINGS! That, to me, is just stupid. I have no problem with alternating the race of a superhero, and of all the choices floating around there I can see Jordan working the best, but you really need to stick at least to the fabric of the comics. Wait, let me guess...Jordan will be adopted!

But when are we getting the Burlesque sequel when Madonna and Britney open a rival club across the street? Surely all their careers could use that right now.

October 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHayden W

lol I could listen to Cher talk about Madonna all day.
I love the admiration and respect she has for her.. Sweet.

Speaking of Wonder Woman (clumsy and tangential, I know): The modern comics, brain trust that DC is right now, are turning Wonder Woman into just a supporting character in the Superman mythos. (They're dating, Wonder Woman met The New Gods (and eventually travelled to New Genesis) in her solo title (why!?) and Superboy (before Flashpoint, mixed genetics clone of Superman and Lex Luthor, now just a clone of Superman) fought Doctor Psycho. Ugh. Give the rights to her (and all of her villains) back to the Marston estate, you morons!)

The Toni Collette movie also has Nina Arianda! I'll be disappointed if it's a nothing supporting role like she had in Win-Win, but still, after seeing her in Venus in Fur I'll see her in anything.

I love those bible movies from the 50's with amazing costumes, lots of insinuated sexual tension and gigantic sets. I want Darren to channell his inner DeMille and make the The Ten Commandments of our century!

As I white guy with two black siblings who are no less a part of my family than my white sibling (which isn't all that unusual in today's America) can I ask what's the big deal with the idea of a mixed-race Storm family?
On second thought I don't care, just stop complaining about it.

My casting choices for Fantastic Four out of anyone:

Reed: Casey Affleck. (38)
Sue Storm: Someone on the forums suggested Brit Marling. (30) Not necessarily physically strong, but I'd buy her being willing to knock aomeone on their keister with superpowers more than Kate Mara.
Johnny Storm: Max Records. (16) (I know that's probably way young (14 years younger than Marling), but I could still see the studio pull it off, and since Marvel or DC's production companies didn't react quickly enough so he could do Dick Grayson (Robin) or Alex Power (Power Pack)? I think this could be an interesting way to see him in the superhero sphere.
Ben Grimm: They need someone other than Chiklis, but I have no clue who that would be.

Mark Harris can sulk over Best Actress potentially being 5 previous winners.

"They need to think more along the lines of that bang-up job Marvel did interpreting Captain America for the 21st century by rooting him first so boldly in the early 20th century where he feels so natural."

This kind of has to begin in the comics. I would've laughed at Captain America as a bankable movie franchise had I not consumed so much of the Winter Soldier plot as a teen.

It's also why I really want Wonder Woman and Aquaman movies. There are multiple comic runs to suggest it could work. But then that is a cruel mistress because I want both such projects handled with care and kids gloves which is the opposite of how big studios do with franchise movies. And with Fantastic Four, I have no idea what great runs there were as I have not read one in over a decade.

nathaniel, the orgasm face (!) posters of the characters from "nymphomaniac" would provide a fun "thoughts I had" post.

October 10, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermarcelo

CMG: Though it's not the main book labelled "Fantastic Four", that "Franklin Richards: Son of a Genius" looks like retro cartoon style fun that hits closer to the old-school style that makes sense for this franchise.
