Linking Time

Hollywood Will the ending of August Osage County screened at TIFF be the ending it has in theaters? The film might not be "locked" just yet
Pajiba on social media, celebrity, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Town & Country & BuzzFeed suddenly the internet noticed Clint's son Scott Eastwood (also an actor). I think he looks like a douchey fratboy but the internet don't care. The internet wants what it wants. Weirdly T&C claims he's channeling leading men of the sixties but the only movie star I'm seeing in the photos is a bit of Young Clint Eastwood... the nose mostly.

Sketchy Details yes! another Short Term 12 convert. We must grow and grow, the Short Term 12 fan club.
New York Post check out this Taiwanese movie theater and it's hand painted movie posters
Vulture the final season of Mad Men will be split in two. Mad Men until 2015!  Anything that makes it last longer is A OK by me but I've been reading nasty comments online about it. A lot of "that show has outstayed its welcome" comments (some by people who admit they don't watch it). Sigh. This is why we can't have nice things. If every show on tv was even a third as good as Mad Men at its weakest,  television would be an infinitely better place.
Variety in other Mad Men news, Oscar winner Robert Towne (Chinatown) has joined the writing table for the final season

Must Reads with a Longer Running Time
New York Times Terrific insightful confessional by Lisa Schwarzbaum on Blue Jasmine, an old Lucille Ball television movie, modern women's picture and "fear of baglady-dom"
IndieWire surveys critics on the best of TIFF 13. I love seeing survey results but it usually mightily depresses me since as insightful as critics can be I find that they're usually not very strong when it comes to judging acting. Even if Gravity grows on me (possible) I am 99.9% likely to maintain that the star performances are serviceable but ungreat and obviously so. And yet Sandra Bullock has a higher rank in Best Lead performance than Huppert, Gheorghiu, Streep, or Chastain? Absurd.
Peter Taggart very funny conversation about this year's forthcoming Emmy awards and who should win.

...But I thought you haven't seen A:OC yet? If that's the case, how can you be sure that ranking Bullock's performance higher than Streep's is absurd?

"Douchey fratboy": nailed it.

Oh, have you heard the news? A cast has been chosen for the inevitable 'Paddington Bear' live action film. However, as an open actressexual™ I'm excited by the idea of Kidman and Hawkins co-starring in a movie written by Emma Thompson.

Wonderful news about Robert Towne. Mad Men has a history of bringing in the great screenwriters from New Cinema - Frank Pierson (RIP) wrote Signal 30, one of my favorite episodes.

People who think Mad Men has overstayed its welcome can shove it. I wish we could follow Don, Joan and Pete all the way to 1980.

Jan -- good point. i shouldn't prejudge but given the reviews for Streep, i'd have thought these same critics who raved and raved about her would have placed her higher than 6th (!!!!) and i like sandra bullock i really do. But there is zero that's deep about that performance. It's fine, really. but award worthy? can't wait to hear people start trying to justify why.

I don't do Twitter, Instagram, or any such stuff. But that Vine clip of JGL is downright adorable.

Theis: The one where Paddington is going to be voiced by Colin Firth? Isn't Paddington supposed to be, y'know, childlike? (Yes, I have memories, however faint, of the cartoon.) I might have bought Jamie Bell or someone younger or even a pro voice actor, but Firth doesn't sound young. Charming, yes, but in a way that still betrays his age.

The New York Times piece is brilliant. I'm not a woman, but I've got exactly the same fear.

I worship Mad Men and I will miss it; however, I'm not crazy about this whole split season thing. I'm afraid it might mess its imppecable pace.

PS Cheyenne Jackson. Just saying...

I'm with you, Mad Men until 2015 is fine by me. I'm not ready to let go!

That New York Times piece is an insightful read. And Peggy Sue I agree with you; I'm not a woman either but that is something I think about often. Sure Blue Jasmine had its lighter moments, but for me the movie was mostly dark, depressing stuff, especially the final scene, which was the most wrenching thing I've seen in a long, long time. Happy to see Cate Blanchett get such a plum role that suits her to a tee; she deserves all of the accolades she's received so far.

All I knew about Short Term 12 going in was that every writer I trust was raving about it. I quickly looked at some plot info--basically workers at foster facility--and left it at that. I was blown away. It's the kind of film so good that you're recharged on cinema, able to take in the worst without fear of seeing another bad one right away.

It's going to hurt if this one doesn't get traction this awards season like it hurt when Sally Hawkins wasn't nominated for Happy-Go-Lucky. So far, the indie films are dominating the year for me and I can only hope that this, Fruitvale Station, and Frances Ha can gain more attention. I'm not delusional. None of those films will win anything major. But a major nomination for them will guarantee them a larger audience out of curiosity and cultural significance.
