Open Thread. Multiple Screenings?

Have you seen any movie, at home or in theaters, more than once this calendar year? I was looking over my Letterboxd account and realizing how useful it would be to track my viewing if I actually updated it daily. But I don't rewatch a lot of stuff. From January 1st through the right now, that's only five for me: Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Gone Girl (twice each in theaters), Under the Skin (once in theaters, once at home) and Burlesque (two days in a row on cable. shut up, I love it).

How about you? And if you haven't what are you dying to see again?

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA.... 36 nights in a row on the F/X channel hah

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDavid

I'd have to check my screening log (which, congratulations to me, is the nerdiest thing I will say all day) but I'm pretty sure I've seen four movies twice in theaters this year - Godzilla, X-Men, Dragons 2, and Lucy. While I liked all four movies, I double dipped in all four cases more to accommodate different groupings of friends or family than out of overwhelming love of the movies themselves. I find that I don't rewatch much stuff at home anymore - partly that's from watching too much tv, but also partly from wanting to see new stuff when i have the time to watch anything.

Of the stuff I've seen lately, I"m most eager to revisit Life of Riley and Goodbye to Language 3-D, two bizarre late in life near-masterpieces from very old French dudes, which is one of my favorite subgenres. They're my two favorite films of the year so far.

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRoark

Don't judge. I've seen all four Bourne movies more than once, The International 3 times, Dangerous Beauty at least twice and the first Star Trek a couple of times and.....D Craig's Bond films, all three, between 3 and 6 times each. What we do at home, stays at home.

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHenry

People with kids will almost certainly be answering this question in the affirmative.

For me it's "The Lego Movie," which my 2-year old keeps requesting and I'm totally fine with that.

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAlex C.

I've seen The Towering Inferno about 48 times. Give or take.

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

Watched twice, once in theater and once at home: Under the Skin, Enemy, X-men DoFP (3 of the better films from part one of this year IMO).

At home: In the Loop (shame, I know, that I hadn't seen it until this year. It was great!) & Fantastic Mr. Fox (because I have a kid, and its likely my favorite Wes Anderson movie)

I want to see Gone Girl again because right now I personally think it's one of Fincher's worst films, even if it was enjoyable.

I really like this post. Most my movie watching life (AKA normal life) I've been an avid re-watcher. I think one of the highest honors, if not the highest, a film can merit is its tenacity to be re-watched. Not only does it reconfirm the top-notch quality of every aspect of the film's construction, all those perfect parts are working together to create sort of a timeless and intangible (magical) connection with the viewer.

However, this year has been abnormal for me, more about catching up on classics I've never seen probably because I was re-watching the same favorite movies in the past

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDino

I saw GUARDIANS twice and will see PRIDE 1.5 times by this weekend hopefully. As for films on TV... well isn't MAID IN MANHATTAN always playing in the background somewhere?

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

Thank god you kept it to this calendar year (that's much easier for me to write):

X-Men Days Of Future Past (Three times in theaters, probably twice on VOD and quite a few times when the Rouge Cut comes out on Blu-Ray next year)

Snowpiercer (Twice on VOD)

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Once in theaters, twice on VOD)

Captain America: Winter Soldier (Once in theaters, twice on VOD)

Locke (Twice on VOD)

Neighbors (Once in theaters, probably twice on VOD)

Edge Of Tomorrow (Once in theaters, probably twice on VOD)

Gone With The Wind (Once on Blu-Ray, once in theaters)

Under The Skin (Once in theaters, once on VOD)

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug (Once on VOD, once on Cable)

Godzilla (Once in theaters, once on VOD)

Gravity (twice on VOD)

For me, re-watching films is an essential part of my love of film. If I loved something then I want to experience it again; and if I didn't love something - or was indifferent to it - then a re-watch will probably clarify my exact feelings on it. Anyway, of the movies still to come, I'll more than likely see Interstellar and The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies more than once in theaters (unless they flat out suck). Of the films I've already seen this year, I'll more than likely give some of them at least one re-watch.

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDaniel Armour

Just to clarify: I think Interstellar and The Hobbit 3 will be pretty fun, so I expect to enjoy them enough to warrant second viewings.

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDaniel Armour

Daniel Armour, I agree with your reasons concerning watching films more than once. I have to really like a film, though, to do it...and if I really fall in love with a film, watch out!

This year, off the top of my head (don't have my film diary with me), I've seen Pride and A Most Wanted Man twice each, Locke three times, and Ida eight times.

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBill_the_Bear

There's only one movie I saw twice in theathers this year, and it was The Way He Looks. Also re-watched it at home once.I also re-watched Captain America: The Winter Soldier at home after seeing it in the theathers earlier in the year. I also share your Burlesque love and have watched it twice at home this year. And that was it. There have been so many things new things to watch and catch upon , and old movies to revisit after some time or see for the first time that I didn't watch many things twice this year.

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterV

I saw Begin Again again.

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterEd

I watch "The Conjuring" at least a few times a month, usually on a Saturday morning when I'm having breakfast.

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

The Immigrant. The second time was to appreciate the visuals.

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

Free Fall, because of the many nuances of the main characters' relationships, easily missed on the initial viewing.

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

That's easy... Lost in Translation.... 3 times in the theaters From 9/21 to 12/24 in 2003 and Girl with a Pearl Earring on my birthday and at a screening in January. Scar-Jo was hot at the time.

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSteven

Steven - At the time??? She's still very hot.

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterGab

My letterboxd diary is too long for this year alone at this point for me to count accurately but I do know one thing for sure. I have seen my favourite film at least 5 times this year already. Sideways

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterQueermyntcritic

Grand Budapest Hotel (good choice, a second viewing ironed out some of my concerns with the first viewing plus the second time was in a old grand red curtain theater which always helps, especially a colorful and nostalgic film like that!) and possibly Nebraska (can't remember whether I saw it before or after last December. It did NOT benefit from a second viewing. I went from intruiged interest to "why do the women's lives have no importance/why do they deserve to be taught lessons by THESE men" hatred).

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commentercatbaskets

These answers always surprise me. I feel like everyone watches movies more on loop than I do. I sometimes go years and years and years between rewatches even on movies I love.

TROY - don't you worry what that's doing to your digestive track?

CRAIG --ooh, i liked that one and I've never heard anyone mention it. Netflix Instant gem.

ED - love it.

BROOKESBOY - i'm talking about this year! (but guess what? i've never seen The Towering Inferno!)

October 16, 2014 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Boyhood (three times)

Chef (twice)

Captain America (three times)

How to Train Your Dragon 2 (twice)

Begin Again (four times)

Grand Budapest Hotel (twice)

The Raid 2: Berandal (twice)

Snowpiercer (twice)

And if I find the Time, I would love to see Gone Girl and the Boxtrolls a second time. I work at a movie theater, so movies are free for me and the person accompanying me. So basically, if I see a movie I like, I just force my family and friends to go see it with me so they can share my love for it, and they usually say yes. It's easier to persuade someone to do something when it's free, I suppose.

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBensunce

I saw Inside Llewyn Davis, American Hustle and Grand Budapest Hotel in theaters and at home. And I watched Terms of Endearment on Netflix twice, Shirley is a treasure!

I'm kind of surprised I don't have more to list, but I'm making an effort to rewatch movies I haven't seen for awhile, instead of watching the same movies repeatedly.

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

I want to see 'Under The Skin', 'Snowpiercer', 'Grand Budapest Hotel'' and 'Gone Girl' again.

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRebecca

In theaters and then again at home:

- The Wolf of Wall St.
- Her
- August: Osage County

Multiple times at home:
- Thief (1981)
- The Counselor (there was a director's cut, don't judge me!)
- Weekend (2011)
- Under the Skin (2014)
- Possession (1981)

Under the Skin is probably my favorite movie of the year so far and I'm sure I'll watch it several more times before the year is over. I also have plans to revisit Enemy and The Double now that I have the blu-rays, and I'm kinda itching to see Gone Girl again.

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterthefilmjunkie

Ha! Fun question.

Snowpiercer--twice; went back a second time to discover why I didn't like it, though Chris Evans is really good

The Starving Games-twice, just to get all the stupid jokes

Girl Rising-twice

Galaxy Quest--four times, at least part of it, 'cause I love it so much

"returning the painting" scene from the Thomas Crown Affair - about 10 times, mostly for the music, and to watch Rene Russo watch Pierce Brosnan

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPam

Wow, I forgot all the films I saw twice back during voting season. I try to watch them twice (once in theater if possible, but I live and 90 minutes from the nearest movie house, so.....) but at least twice to give them a fair shake. That means, AH, AOC, 12YaS, G, DU, ...........the letters go on and on........

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHenry

Begin Again and Gone Girl twice in theaters, both first times were for their premiere screening so those tickets were free but I liked them so much that I thought I should give them my money.

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSanty C.

So far I've watched 12 O'CLOCK BOYS 3x -- THE WIND RISES 2x -- CALVARY 2x. The only one I saw in a theatre was, the first time I saw, THE WIND RISES at the El Capitan: Hollywood. It was stunning on that BIG screen and quite a lovely film for being so devastating as well.

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commentersissyinhwd

Only Maps to the Stars.
First time was really disappointed. Was appalled at how bad the screenplay was as a whole, both dialogue-wise and plot-wise, but especially in reference to industry people:

- I drove Juliette Lewis once.
- She's a scientologist.
(I never believed this response, even though I love that J. Lewis is high profile enough to be mentioned)

- This is Gary Marshall, not Bertolucci.
(I doubt she would even know who Bertolucci is).

- He ain't P.T. Anderson.
(Again, I doubt these people would have PTA as a reference for greatness. Maybe Spielberg or, by a long shot, Scorsese)

The fact Moore can accomplish what she does is such a testament to the greatness of her talents. It is masterful creation, and it almost feels like she did all the work (similar to what Cate Blanchett did in Blue Jasmine).

Non-2014 Multiple Views

I've watched THE COUNSELOR at least 5x - once in theatre. Not sure what the big deal was about the film when it was released. I loved it the first time I saw it and every time since. Also watched MONSEUR VERDOUX about 4x in 3 days after I got the Criterion Blu-Ray and once again just recently. It and CITY LIGHTS are my favorite Chaplin films. Can watch them both over and over.

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commentersissyinhwd

I'm not a big re-watcher - I watch many movies every week, and I'd rather watch something new than watch something again. Holidays are usually the only time I re-watch something, and it's usually something selected at random from my own DVD collection.

That said, I did see HER twice in the one week back in January, but that was because the second time was on a second date, and I had already seen everything on the list of movies she said she was interested in seeing. HER was the only one I was quite happy to see again.

Mr Goodbar - but Juliette lewis is actually a Scientologist.

October 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

I know. The problem I have with it was that it seemed so forced the way that piece of information was introduced just so Pattinson's character could make a "commentary" about scientology in the context of Hollywood. Those moments were too "Hollywood 101" for me and not what those characters would be really saying, as inauthentic as the party filled with industry people (the worst part of the movie is the dialogue between the teens - it feels like 20 minutes long, but it's probably only 5.

October 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMr. Goodbar

I know, but it just felt forced to bring that up randomly just so Jerome could make his commentary on Scientology in the context of Hollywood. It felt as inauthentic as that "party" filled with industry people. The worst part of the whole movie is by far the scene with the teenagers - embarrassing writing there - too "Hollywood 101" and not what those characters would really be saying in reality, I felt. It is a little like von Trier when he makes movies about America without ever been here. He can get away with it because he taps into universal themes within the constraints of his imaginary America with such bravado and originality. Here neither the screenwriter nor Cronnenberg can mask the fact they've never been part of Hollywood and don't seem to have a good grasp on what it would be like. I also never believed Moore's mother was a cult actress and was nominated for an Oscar.

I saw Foxcatcher at two different film festivals.

THE FIRST TIME, I was struck by Bennett Miller’s cinematic control of the work and the story’s many layers. I was creeped out by Steve Carell’s eerie performance as John du Pont. I left the bleak film completely saddened. Mark Ruffalo was the soul of the film and I was proud of the brave, inspiring and physical performance by Channing Tatum.

THE SECOND TIME, I wanted to pay attention to the nuances. Literally every scene, shot, piece of dialogue says something about the character or the film’s many themes. Completely economical. Every part. Kudos to Miller, cinematographer Greig Fraser and screenwriters E Max Frye and Dan Futterman for that. I think it's a major work of American cinema.

there's so much that I haven't seen that I found I re-watch a lot less than I did when I was younger. but so far this year I saw one of my favorites of the year, LOVE IS STRANGE, twice in the theater. UNDER THE SKIN once in the theater and again for Hit Me With Your Best Shot, and BLACK NARCISSUS on Criterion, which i had never seen before and watched it twice in one day because I loved it so much.

I've also seen parts of THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA at least 4 times this month alone because there's an unspoken rule that if it's on TV, you must watch it. and it's always on...

Gone Girl 3x's

October 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKai

I've only seen Under the Skin twice this year, once in theaters and once on blu-ray. What a stunner!

But I just saw The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Him/Her the other day and I wanted to go back and watch Him again as soon as it was over, just to see if the differences I thought I saw in the shared scenes in Her were really there. Also because I kept almost falling asleep for the first half of Him and I felt REALLY bad about it. I also kinda want to see the combined Them cut, because I have a suspicion that it becomes a far more ordinary film that way. Watching it as two halves forming a whole, though, it was pretty special. Also I'm dying to know which ending they used.

October 17, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterdenny

abstew - black narcissus made such a good best shot episode!

October 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Too many at home, so just the ones I saw at the cinema more than once:

12 Years a Slave x2
August: Osage County x2
The Grand Budapest Hotel x2
Frank x2
X-Men: Days of Future Past x3
The Fault in Our Stars x2
