Set Photos of Punk-Rock Meryl Streep

Margaret here, trying not to freak out about these set photos of Meryl Streep. Pretend for a moment that the magic of internet reporting hasn't told us exactly what she's filming right now. (It's the Diablo Cody-penned, Jonathan Demme-directed dramedy Ricki and the Flash, wherein La Streep plays an aging rock star.)

This is so full of possibility. As long as she's in this getup, let's indulge in some fantasizing...

She wears motorcycle boots! She sports extensions! She makes out with Rick Springfield!

THINGS MERYL STREEP COULD BE FILMING IN THAT COSTUME

1. A Freaky Friday meta-sequel where Meryl switches bodies with the real Lindsay Lohan and starts clubbing all night and missing call times while Lindsay ends up on the fast-track to an Oscar win

2. A Mike Nichols-directed commercial for Meryl's new campaign as the Spring 2015 face of Hot Topic

3. The music video for Rick Springfield's "I'm F*@#ing Matt Damon"-style parody song "Gummer's Girl"

4. HBO's new docu-series about the underground Oscar-winners' punk band where Streep plays bass alongside a be-mohawked Helen Mirren on lead guitar and a buzzcut Judi Dench on drums

5. A  prank video where unassuming Forever 21 shoppers get the shock of their life when the mannequin they're admiring reveals herself to be acting legend Mary Louise Streep

6. Bonus scenes as a fourth witch for the DVD re-release of Hocus Pocus

7. The sequence in a Boy George biopic where the famous bowler hat can't be found anywhere

8 Season three of Orphan Black, where she challenges all the Streep comparisons heaped upon Tatiana Maslany by playing the clone Sarah and daring the audience to notice the difference

9. A YouTube makeup tutorial for getting the Rebecca on How to Get Away with Murder look

I hope she does them all. Name a tenth possibility!

Christopher Nolan re-imagines The Partridge family with Streep as Laurie and Springfield as Keith.

I hope the next phase of Meryl Streep's career is so brilliant and dynamic that everybody hates themselves for thinking her latest run (Doubt through Osage County) has been anything special.

10. A meta Charlie Kauffman-penned movie in which real life Streep is knocked out by one of her Oscars falling off a shelf an, while unconscious, she imagines what her life would've been like if Jane Fonda hadn't told her where to stand in her first on screen scene in Julia .

The only thing I don't like about this (from an acting standpoint) is Rick Springfield. But I love her and her cheekbones in those boots.

Now that Twin Peaks is coming back, that outfit has the Killer Bob (the original actor is dead) vibe going on, and so does that makeup in the first pic. And wouldn't we all kill for a Lynch/Streep collab?

Sophie's Choice. Alternate ending.

Does anyone see a Death-Becomes-Her-from-the-poster-Meryl in the top photo? I almost spit out my coffee. Loving the 1963 Beetle too. (or is it a '62?)

#9 makes me laugh.

She's dressed like that to play Sean Penn's "Old Lady" in "This Must Be The Place."

@Pam

Thanks for reminding me I still need to have that poster.

I have never wanted anything as badly as I now want to see at least one thing on this list happen.

Stop giving me nightmares with that #1 suggestion, Margaret. :) Imagine if that really happens? Lohan winning an Oscar might be what causes the Academy to lose all credibility, shut down their operation and hang their heads in shame.

"Lohan winning an Oscar might be what causes the Academy to lose all credibility, shut down their operation and hang their heads in shame."

That's an outrageously mean statement. There was a time in EVERY actress who has an Oscar's career when we hadn't yet seen an Oscar-worthy performance from her, unless she's Lupita Nyong'o. I'm still not a fan but look at what Shailene Woodley's career was before The Descendants.

The goodwill and personal responsibility and narrative and timing may never coalesce around Lindsay Lohan to make an Oscar happen, but if all those things did it'd be seen as an enormous triumph for her, not an embarrassment for the Academy. She's a talented actress.

Hayden W,

I like Lindsay Lohan.
But you know that for the general public, if the Oscars (hypothetically) award her, they'll lose all credibility.

October 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJay

If she gives a performance that clears critics, audiences, precursors, and Academy smell tests (which is the only way anyone ever wins an Oscar) then there will be no shame for anyone involved. It would be an excellent comeback narrative, even if that's unlikely ever to happen.

October 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHayden W.

She looks amazing, damn it! Now expectations are sky high.

October 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLuiserghio

As if there were another kind of expectation when you read her name on a project.

October 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLuiserghio

Streep still pushing herself artistically at 64... She deserves all the accolades she gets..

October 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

All of the points. All of them.

10. Once Upon a Time's alternate persona for Jem where her new drugged up existence has aged her a bit. When she is freed from the curse placed on her, her magical pink hair will restore her true form.

October 30, 2014 | Unregistered Commentereurocheese

I want Meryl and Julianne to go on tour as their characters from Ricki and the Flash and What Maisie Knew.

October 31, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJoey

After this post, I can't get the idea of Meryl Streep starring as Cyndi Lauper out of my head.

Joey -i'm camping out for tickets!!!
