HuffPo Gabby Sidibe gets in trouble for using the word "Tranny" on television. It's hard to keep up. Gabby is not alone. I also didn't realize this word was now off limits since LGBT people have been using it for years and in names of clubs and dance nights and everything ("Tranny Shack" "Tranny Chasers" etcetera)
Cinema Blend American Hustle will hit DVD Bluray on March 18th. I wonder if it will have any Oscar wins to tout on its cover? You think?

I keep meaning to share this really fun video of all the Best Visual Effects winners at the Oscars from Star Wars through Life of Pi. You've probably seen it already but isn't it a good watch?!

The tranny issue is news to me too, I mean I never thought of it as insulting but more as a term of endearment towards drag queens (heck even RuPaul has a song called Tranny Chaser). But I don't claim to know how transgender people perceive it and I can't imagine Gabby Sidibe did either, and she has since apologized and it seems like a sincere apology.
On American Hustle's prospective win count: 2, most likely. Original Screenplay and Costume Design. Would have been three but...what the hay makeup branch? (Dallas Buyers Club has a clear path now.) (Personally, I'd almost want to suggest splitting makeup as two categories: prosthetic makeup (fantasy monsters, battle damage, aging makeup and other extreme physical transformations) and non-prosthetic makeup and hairstyling. Each gets three a year.)
One of my favorite things about AHS Coven (of which there are many) is Gabby's chemistry with Kathy Bates. Her final plea for Bates' character to repent was a surprising turn (I thought she had given up on her) and very well done.
Volvagia -- or invite more non prosthetic people into that branch and have five nominees and make sure everyone understands the title change of the category. I frankly don't understand why we can't just have a balanced Oscars in which all categories have the same configuration (5 nominees. perfect. done and done and done x many)
Oh, I hope Emily Van Camp gets out the Hamptons soon.
Re Miami Film Festival, I would like to see a post where you and your TFE colleagues rank all the film festivals in terms of offerings, venues, transportation, ease of entrance to screenings, which one is best for non-critics, etc. I'd like to attend one of the big 10 in 2015 so I'm starting to do some research.
With the exception of purely animated films, every film has makeup. There is no reason why they cannot have five nominees in the category each year. It's the Original Song of the tech categories, that's for sure. No one cares enough to actually change it in a meaningful way that benefits all potential nominees.
Original Screenplay: Her
Costume Design: The Invisible Woman, 12 Years a Slave or The Great Gatsby
Paul Outlaw: Would Her, of the nominees, be the Best Original Screenplay winner in a just world? Yes. Will it? No, Hustle has Orig Screenplay, at minimum, IN THE BAG. Costume Design is dicey, and probably down to Hustle and the three you mentioned, but I think it's Best Pic frontrunner status just a bit ago will have significant portions possibly wanting it to be able to justifiably lay claim to more than just ONE statue, pulling out the surprise upset.
American Hustle just came out in December and already it's being released in DVD three months later. Shouldn't they take advantage of more box office if it does win some Oscars?
I really don't think Hustle's screenplay win is "in the bag". In fact, I am inclined to believe that Her is the non-solid frontrunner. Just like Hustle, Her arguably overperformed on nomination day as well. The Globes and BFCA wins are no small feat either.
re: Visual Effects Reel
still chill inducing: TITANIC, INDEPENDENCE DAY, JURASSIC PARK, STAR WARS, ALIENS
Raul -- i thought that was weird too. i mean it's still in the top ten of teh box office.
I was made aware of the slur when Christian Siriano was making it during Project Runway.
But, yeah in drag culture it is used but there has been a push by the trans community to stop using it as an umbrella term when people seem to drink a RuPaul and a Chaz Bono are the same thing.
But I don't know, I hated when that word described Leto's character in DBC which was just as bad as the drag queen misapplication. The kicker was gay men were doing that, so when I see the 'LGBT people use it', I just think gay men. **shrugs**
rami -- that's exactly how i perceived the word, too, as a term of endearment. I love RuPaul's song "tranny chasers"
cmg -- do you mean within the context of that movie? because that movie is set in the mid 80s and it would be dumb for the language to reflect otherwise.
AH winning Best Original Screenplay. What a chilling, reprehensible thought that might just happen in the crazy-ass Oscar climate this year. That would be a more egregious offense that last year's winner--Tarantino for Django Unchained beating Boal for Zero Dark Thirty.
I didn't watch Gabby's interview, but looking at the transcript, it seems like she was more or less making of fun of the police for focusing on "trannys" instead of real crime. Does this mean I can't call my friend a "hot tranny mess" anymore?
I think American Hustle is winning Best Picture. I know Gravity/12 Years shared the Producers Guild, but all the American Hustle nominations (10?? For real???) give me the hunch that it has Oscar wrapped around it's finger. I think it's a sure thing for Costumes, and I can just seeing it upsetting all night taking Screenplay from Her, Picture from 12 Years, and even maybe stealing supposed locks Actress from Blanchett and Directing from Cuaron.
But I could also be a crazy person.
That was a very well edited video.
Fx reel was really well edited. Surprised Jurassic Park didn't get special achievement that year. You know the other nominees had zero chance of winning. Also I watched this reel on my IPhone and couldn't believe how good Avatar looked on a tiny screen (better than on best buy display screens). And boy do some of those practical effects hold up better than some CGI.
